A report from the Pew Research Center (.pdf) says that one in three teens say they have texted while driving, the other two thirds admitted to lying while answering survey questions. :D

One in three (34%) texting teens ages 16-17 say they have texted while driving. That translates into 26% of all American teens ages 16-17. Half (52%) of cell-owning teens ages 16-17 say they have talked on a cell phone while driving. That translates into 43% of all American teens ages 16-17. 48% of all teens ages 12-17 say they have been in a car when the driver was texting.

Last week's texting while driving thread just resulted in the typical array of "but I am special, I can drive just fine when I'm drunk" err..."texting"...comments. I expect more of the same here.

Does posting on forums count as texting?

The study should be changed to indicate the following:

One in three (34%) texting teens ages 16-17 say they have texted while driving, thus proving they are functionally retarded.

Seriously, don't people realize they are in control of a half-ton to multi-ton moving implement of death and destruction?

I read the title as "One third of teens should be sterilized"

How can people say they can drive when not looking at the road? It is physically impossible.

It's like when you're really, really, reaaaally tired and still have to keep driving... you just wait for a long straight portion of road and close your eyes until you figure you're near the next turn... rinse and repeat!

(I'm obviously joking btw)....

Have you ever tried simply turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?

Is this even news? I can see it all over the place when I drive. Even though Maryland has a law against texting while driving.

I've read messages while driving if they're short, and then wait for a stoplight to reply if it's actually important...

But I've seen people trying to text with two hands while driving with their knees or whatever and it's scary... I knew a girl down the street who crashed her WRX into the back of a semi because she was texting and the traffic stopped but she wasn't looking up anymore... Daddy is a doctor and bought her another WRX by the next day..

I know it's not a safe thing, but I've texted while driving before. I can text with one hand without looking at the phone and still be really accurate, so I don't think it's any more dangerous than talking on the phone. (I am NOT saying it isn't dangerous, or even stupid)

Anyway, it's not like I make it a habit, and I certainly don't do it under high stress driving conditions. Just trying to point out that not everyone needs to stare at the screen (or keypad) while they text.

I dunno about that but I know some people who text one handed without looking at the phone.

That's great for outgoing messages I guess but what about incoming messages? When the friend/family member/whoever replies and they check the content of the text message they just received. Do they pull over to the side of the road and then read the message or ...do they move their eyes to the pone and start reading?

Or is it a 'I only send while driving, but I don't receive'.

The drinking and driving equivilent of 'Its ok, I didn't start drinking UNTIL I got in the car. Its not like I had a bunch at the bar. I figured by the time the alcohol takes effect, I'll already be home if I start drinking in the car on the way home!

Let's add texting behind the wheel resulting in an accident or bodily harm of another person, passenger or yourself as one strike towards the three-strike rules? It'll get rid of texters sooner or later and really encourage a drop in texting behind the wheel :)

If only i had a phone with minutes. Eh thats pretty much a deathwish for my camaro in chicago traffic.

Whoa, wait a minute! A significant percentage of teens are bloody morons? I'm SHOCKED.

This reminds me back in the early 90's of the time my father and I were driving behind this lady and the light turns starts to turn red, so she suddenly stops at least 500ft from the line and starts putting on make-up. Old dad had to swerve to miss her. BTW, she was a blonde.

I'm surprised the number isn't higher, something like 2/3 since everything in America seems to be 2/3:

2/3 of people are fat
2/3 people get divorced
2/3 people are up to their knees in debt
2/3 will rely entirely on social security by the time they retire
etc.

Last week a girl here in Kalamazoo, Michigan was texting while driving and she plowed
into the back of a stopped Semi-Truck and was instantly killed.

I think this is all the reason in the world to stop texting while driving.

How sad and what a terrible loss, just for texting.

Isn't the government going to make the penalty the same as DUI? I heard that either on this forum or on the local news (I live in Nevada)

it just pisses me the off that these little twats are behind the wheel risking my family's lives and my life because they need to chat with their other twat friends... its not just kids i see people every day with their cell to their ear yapping away not paying attention to the road.. people absolutely take for granted how dangerous driving is alone even without all these distractions..

i hope you all kids texting bedhind the wheel hit a wall or a phone pole and die so you stay out of the gene pool.

Hm. That's near me, so I wonder why I haven't heard about it. Was she a college student?

There are some who only text at lights, this could make up a portion of those people. I only text while I'm at red lights, and that's the limit of it. Not that I'm saying this is the case, but I'm not an immature teen either.

Also you might want to get off your high horse, unless you're the model citizen who never makes any mistakes or does anything wrong.

From what I have seen.. the poll showed that 1/3 of those asked HAVE texted while driving. So factor out the kids that just do it at lights.. and the kids that HAVE done it once or twice and that was the end of it.. and you're really only talking about 1/4 of 16-17yr. olds that MAY actively text and drive. Still a high number for such a bad habit.. but it's not as staggering as the poll would have you believe.
