Paypal could soon overshadow eBay? Wow, that is rather impressive when you think about it.

But soon, eBay's biggest business will likely be PayPal, the online payments service that has been growing steadily even as the economy has stumbled. EBay has spent much of the past two years trying to improve its faltering marketplace business, hoping to increase buyers' trust and clean up the look of its Web site. In the meantime, PayPal has thrived as more consumers and merchants use it to send money online.

makes sense to me... ebay's been on a steady decline for quite some time. they'll probably be overshadowed by HardOCP before too long.

Ebay rapes people for fees even worse than paypal does. I sold a computer there and paid like $150 in final value fees, $20 in listing fees, and then another $100 for the paypal fee.

Never again.

I sold a graphics card for $221.11 and final fees was $19.90 while listing fees was $1.50 mind you i didn't use any fancy shit to promote my item, and that day they even had free insertion fees so go figures. That is $21 gone down the crapper before even the paypal rape. So total was $28 gone to ebay's revenue.

Yeah ever since I found these forums and a few others ive been done with ebay :)

It's even worse if you sell a game console on eBay because they mandate a MAXIMUM $15 shipping charge, no matter what your auction is. So I just sold off an XBOX 360, a shit load of games, accessories and whatever. Ended up having to ship in 3 boxes and it cost $45 to ship, but I only got $15 for it. Yeah and then there were $30 in fees. They should rename it to eRape.

I'd rather sell my items here at a premium then hand free money over to a big corporation with horrendous customer service.

No thanks ebay...

The FS forum is my freedom from Ebay most of the time.

I still buy there, but rarely do I sell. I just listed my first item months. I've about about a dozen trades/sales here.

selling here works well for tech stuff, but what about everything else like ebay has? ive tried to use overtsock.com, and other auction sites... none seem to have even a fraction of the traffic ebay has. i wish craigslist had national classified listings, to directly compete with ebay. i wouldnt mind if they charge a small fee, i understand that a company must make money, but american corporations have the ideal of continuous growth at all costs.... forever. balance is considered horrible, and only unrealistic progress is expected. there is no way ebay needs to charge as much for what they do, i would bet 95% of the final total you give ebay on any sale is pure profit for them. they would still make a killing if they just charged $1 for every $100 worth of goods sold, flat fee. im not a company though, just a customer so of course im wrong.

Smashing my genitalia with a hammer > using PayPal

"Buyers trust" indeed. Buy, pay, state a claim you never got the item, keep it and get the money back, guaranteed.

AMEN...

I have been completely ROBBED twice using this tactic... I very rarely will accept paypal payments without tons of feedback.

I no longer sell on ebay because of the fees and bullshit associated with it.

I like craigslist for the no hassle / quick transactions it usually has... once you come to an agreement it's easy. But it usually takes a few emails with a bunch of people before that happens.

I don't mind using paypal here for selling, I just verify heat and haven't had any issues...

you ship with a tracking number and it immediately invalidates this claim. I have never lost a claim that i had a dc/tracking number for.

i have never had an issue with paypal.

ebay on the other hand...the fees are getting rediculous, but at the same time i don't know how you guys praise craigslist so much. I hate craigslist with a passion due to the sheer amount of asshats on there. They either don't respond, flake, scam, and talk like they are in fucking kindergarten. I end up using ebay anyway just because it automates transactions and requires less time dealing with cold phone calls, or one sentence emails in all capital letters.

Yea craigslist can be a pain, but when it works out, it's awesome. So much nicer to get cash and not deal with shipping anything.

I've just accepted the fact now.. you have to charge $20 more than you want to recieve if using ebay/paypal.. Im glad that PayPal has the gift option.. but I can see them charging for that too once everyone catches on.

Ive also created 2 paypal accounts so when I receive funds in 1 for selling on ebay, I immediately gift it to my other account and from there deposit it into my bank.. this way if the buyer is fraudulent, and tries to retract payment, paypal cannot reverse the funds without dipping into my linked bank account which I do not believe they are not allowed to do?

I just had an ordeal on which I sent item out and then buyer somehow canceled the transaction.. PayPal froze and reversed my $140 which had been pending deposit into my bank... total BS!! I was without the product and without the money.. I had to do my own investagation, which lead me to call the UPS store is was shipping to, who thankfully had me call the USPS hub down there, who had already delivered the package but went out the next day to retract the package (thanks to the UPS store who put it aside for return).. but damn.. what an ordeal and I learned a HARD lesson.. Fu*Ck PayPal.

The problem with the gift option is there is no buyer/seller protection.

So the using the gift option leaves you with no protection, that's what the fee's pay for. If you want to send "gifts" then paypal isn't going to cover you if you claim you didn't get an item... because you shouldn't have gotten anything ... you sent a gift... :)

But if both parties are trusting each other it's a great way to save on fees as there are none.

I don;t see how this is impressive. It was a no brainer, about the best thing eBay has done since launching eBay was to buy Paypal.

All Paypal does is shit money doing next to nothing. They take your money, and give it to someone else, and for that great service, rape you in fees. In the meantime, any money you have in your account, they are making interest on. Brilliant idea, whoever came up with it. rape people in fees, make interest off their money, and you do next to nothing.

Paypal is the worst. They charge exorbitant fees and have absolutely no concern for their clientele. Any financial institution that charges fees as high as they do for simple electronic fund transactions should not be allowed to operate with such horrific disregard for their customers.

I bolded the part that's not 100% accurate...depending on the funding choice, there may be fees on gift payments....if your fund the payment with a CC, they charge a fee......and give the sender the option of who will pay it.

Jjust about every on that sells on ebay uses paypal, and people who buy form it use mostly paypal, plus all the business that use it along with people on here individuals. That is a lot of people

I pretty much stopped using ebay a long time ago, though I still have an account.

I got frustrated with ebay for two reasons:

1) ebay support is complacent and isn't really concerned with protecting users from fraud. Their response, if you get one, will be a canned, too freakin' bad, so sorry, you suck.

2) ebay has refused to make changes that would make it easier to use, navigate, find what you are looking for as it relies heavily upon sellers for revenue, and thus will do whatever they say...

A perfect example of this is combining (if able) shipping and cost into one sortable field. I am pretty sure I could code this myself in about 30 seconds. Why then has this never ever happened in all the years that ebay has been in existence? Because sellers rip consumers off on shipping 9 times out of 10 on ebay and will actively try and trick and fool people.

Point in case I was interested in finding a cheap laptop or netbook and decided (against my better judgment) to look on ebay. I saw a whole bunch listed at 0.01 cents, however the shipping would cost you 1499.99. Ridiculous and horrible. Quit don't bother to come back. The end.

This. I'm actually dealing with something similar to this right now. I sold a DFI NF4 UT SLI Expert socket 939 motherboard on there, definitely in good working condition. I ship the item, and while on PayPal, I notice that the money is being held in escrow until after the buyer leaves positive feedback. This was not the case for a 3800+ CPU I sold the same day, just for this motherboard. So I already think something's amiss. The item arrives yesterday, and today I get an email from the buyer stating that the board doesn't work, "parts are loose in the box" and there's a "screw through the board to hold the fan on". I have no clue what that last part means, as the only fan on the board is on the northbridge chipset, and it's held on by plastic clips, not screws. The only screws on the entire board are the ones holding the retention bracket on, and this is the case on EVERY motherboard I've ever seen. Needless to say, the guy doesn't have pictures, nor can he elaborate on what he's talking about. I'm thinking the guy just didn't know what he was doing installing the board, and either damaged it or just gave up, and now wants his money back (or the board is fine and he wants it for free, but since I got delivery confirmation, he can't say the item never arrived). Needless to say, he didn't opt for insurance when I shipped it, so that's not an option. With everything I know about eBay and PayPal, it's highly likely that they will decide to simply give him his money back, and keep what they charged me in fees. Plus I'm out of what it cost me to ship the thing. So, I doubt I will be using eBay again. Outside of eBay, I can't see anyone really having any problems with PayPal, though.

thing is, google's checkout fees are very much inline with paypal's. what i think that means is, visa is the cultprit of the high prices. theyre the ones that get the money for these transactions, the credit companies are making ungodly amounts of money... and TARP was just a free handout to them.
