Is there a way to stop Windows 7 from trying to open a new instance of an application when I shift-click it on the taskbar? It is incredibly annoying. I've searched around for an answer, and in the settings themselves, but have yet to find anything..

shift clicking is supposed to do that. To stop that from happening, you shouldn't use the "shift" button. Maybe I missed something here.

"Welcome to the party, pal..."

That's how you open a second/third/etc instance of an application in Windows 7, donchaknow... or didn't the OP get the memo? :D

And what the hell: why are you (the OP, of course) shift-clicking a Taskbar button in the first place?

you click it normally - opens new instance

right click gives you a menu of opened files with in that program to which you can then open files you want.

takes some getting used to, but eventually you will find how it is useful.

Apologies for the delayed response, I had slipped off to bed. As to why I've found it a bother, I've always used Shift as a push-to-talk key in numerous VoIP applications. It's surely adjustable, I had merely been hoping there was a way to adjust it after having been used to utilizing it thusly for many years.

but still why would you use shift-click on taskbar to open apps, you just click on it?

just a habbit for hitting shift for VOIP programs?

Are you talking about 'used to' clicking it on the tab once it's open or on the shortcut? You can get the old quick launch back.

I think he's talking about speaking using the VOIP program while clicking the taskbar. The focus for Shift isn't only the VOIP program so Windows sees Shift click instead of just click. So it's more of an "accidental" shift click.

Thats how I took it as well. I had the same problem back when I played WoW. I used 'Alt' as my Push-To-Talk, and the command for targeting the next enemy was 'Tab' .

So if I tried to target the next enemy while talking....In the end I think I wound up changing my PTT key.

I guess I've been rather vague! =x

Yes, I mean I've been accidentally opening multiple copies of programs due to speaking(holding down shift) whilst clicking on the task bar. I s'pose I'll merely have to adjust PtT keys for now.

IT'S SOMETHING I HAVE A BAD HABIT WITH TOO. PEOPLE USUALLY SEEM TO NOTICE QUICK.

I'm waiting for the "ok I got the taskbar figured out, now I just need it to not put capital letters when I hit Shift. Is there a way to fix that?"
