The video below demonstrates what Boeing Advanced Tactical Laser, fired from a moving airplane, can do to a vehicle. The results are scary – cool. Thanks to Henry M. for the link.

wow 30 billion dollars and thats all we get.lol(jk)

I was hoping for an explosion, or melting through the engine to disable it, or... something. Not just scorching the paint, heh.

Bet it could melt a person pretty well Just hope they don't get in their car lol.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Were this a person, they'll be in for a nasty hole in their chest or head. Imagine this beam sweeping an area burning everyone out of their trenches to be mowed down by machine gun fire.

Yea, but that'd be like a sniper. Kill Osama Bin Laden with a fricken laser beam! Don't need to move snipers in the area, stay high enough so the terrorists can't throw their rocks at us!

Wait, does this mean we can start using our laser pointers at commercial BOEING airliners?

lol

Boeing has military planes too. The military has contracts with all of the major airplane manufacturers.

The laser beam will also move at the speed of light...which is a bit faster than a bullet which certainly helps targeting, ie no need to lead the target.

Ding ding ding! Not having to lead a fast moving target as much = teh win.

Perhaps it could even be extended to heat food? - all you do is put your pot noodles on the ground, draw a black box around them and call in a laser air strike - just remember to take the reflective foil lid off first.

It would take that kind of powerful laser to possibly -- just possibly -- manscape the back hair off of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Seems like more of our tax dollars thrown uselessly into the military-industrial complex. Funny how some people are so upset if we spend $30 billion to help other human beings live healthier, happier lives but they don't care if we use it to develop useless "weapons" that can't do shit and take an entire tank of fuel to fire...

"Outside observers are skeptical that ATL will pave the way for practical laser weapons. “It’s more of a harassment weapon than anything else,” says Philip Coyle, senior advisor at the Center for Defense Information (Washington, D.C.) and a former director of military testing. He says the laser would not be effective against hardened targets such as tanks, and that targeting individual soldiers would raise ethical concerns about blinding weapons. He suggests that laser weapons might be useful only against “very soft targets” such as pickup trucks and tents."

Let's kill those tents! DIE TENT, DIE!!!!!

We had to find out somehow. I'm sure they'll find a way to improve it though. After all, there are lasers that can cut through thick iron. They'll figure it out.

At least it's Boeing that's doing this and not some top secret military research team that doesn't collaborate with other scientists.

Let's kill those tents! DIE TENT, DIE!!!!!

I'd be pretty freaked out if an entire military tent camp suddenly caught fire with no warning. Or better yet, the tents were all chopped up into sections.

Could use it to lase munitions dumps. That'd be cool.

We have a different laser weapon system, COIL, that has enough power to actually ignite and destroy incoming missiles. The problem is it's very difficult to lock on to and successfully hit an incoming missile. The laser may move at the speed of light but the targeting system doesn't. And the amount of energy required to power these lasers is enormous. Until we start using nuclear powered aircraft I don't think we'll see real laser weapons.

The good news, however, and contrary, is that the stuff we are talking about is the stuff the guv'ment will actually let us know about. That leads me to believe that they have much more efficient and effective laser weaponry.

Now let's go kill those tents! All for the price of whatever billions we've already spent plus $30 billion more!

We could drop a bomb on a munitions dump for far less money and we could have a bunch more bombs (or a lighter aircraft) that does it. The laser is to take out a single anti-aircraft battery stuck in the middle of a population center. But I'm not sure how scorching the paint is going to take it out.

Now if we are really worried about tents near population centers, we've got us a weapon we can use! Imagine the panic when (dunh, dunh, dunnnnh) your tent catches on fire!
