So a little more than 2 months ago my duplex burned to the ground because of my neighbors Meth lab.....err "Electrical fire"
All jokes aside the AC jack behind my couch was faulty and the sparking ignited the couch which burned the entire 2 story duplex down with everything in it. I lived on bottom so even if I was able to salvage anything ,which I doubt I would have been able to do anyway, but the top floor collapsed onto my unit.Long story short, my girlfriend and I lost virtually everything we own including our beloved cat "nibbler" . In my youth I competed at nearly every CPL event and partied with Kyle several times about 10 years ago during those great LANS the CPL used to throw. So I emailed Kyle with my sob story, due to having to replace everything, including the front end of her car as the fire was so hot it melted her vehicle,I am completely broke. Well Kyle and Hardocp.com really came through for me in a big way. Sending me a box containing a 3GHZ quad core Intel rig with nautilus 500 water cooler,4Gb ram and Radeon HD 4890 and case burner etc. Which completely blew my mind. It gives me hope for humanity that in my time of need Kyle and everyone else has been such a blessing. So Hardocp truly cares about their readers and we all owe them a round of thanks for the great content theyve been giving us for years, and I owe a lot more.Hopefully one day I can return the favor...jus hope its not because of the same situation!

Should have given you a Genmay sub so you can introduce yourself and then tell us your story. haha ;)

Sounds great, though. Props to Kyle and gang for helpin a brotha out!!

Sorry to hear about your losses man.

Awesome to hear Kyle and Hardocp.com reach out in your time of need. Major rep points for that.

Is there any form of insurance to help you out?

Also did you manage to find your old burned hard-drives? I wonder if you can still recover data from it?

Damn bro, sorry to hear about that man.
Glad to see how awesome our community really is though

You have what's important.... a computer!

No really, it's saddening to lose a pet, car, house, possessions... but do realize what you still have.

C'mon tell the truth, you know you had an entire folding farm plugged into that outlet....

Just kidding. It really does suck to lose all of your stuff. I've been there before too since my parents raised me in tornado alley and I was stupid enough to stay here. Work that insurance company for all they are worth and keep your head up while you start over. Also remember if you or your girl feel any emotional stress coming on, let it out and deal with it now. Anything you keep pent or try to delay tends to cause huge problems later rather than being relatively easy to resolve now. Or at least that is what they taught in all my psych classes.

shit.... now i have to unplug everything and flip off the main breaker before i leave the house/go to sleep every day.... *paranoid* ugh, lived in an apartment when i was way young and apparently the genius downstairs passed out with a lit cigarette.... ever since then my biggest fear is a house fire....

that sucks that you lost everything, but, except for the kitty, everything lost was "stuff" and stuff can be replaced...
well... girlfriends can be replaced too but... yeh... not going there....

and WTG [H] for hooking you up with a new box... i will never make fun of Kyle's mullet again... well.... at least in this thread....

*typo edit*

Good Luck getting back on track and I am so glad to hear that you and your GF got out okay.

terribly sorry to hear of your losses. high fives to [H] for helping you out though. I've always liked the way people interact on this site and its always nice to hear of someone helping out someone else who is in need.

Sorry to hear, man. I hope you were insured and most of it is replaced with as little hardship as possible.

Good stuff, Kyle. There's nothing like being blessed with a new gaming rig and you gave the gift of gaming in a time in need of emotional uplift. Couldn't have earned my loyalty and respect in any better way!

Wow, sorry to hear that happened. Hopefully everything has been working out good since then though.

5 starts to Kyle and HardOCP for helping out with the computer situation. I think I would go nutz if that happened to me and I was out of a computer to help keep me calmed!

Props to Kyle for stepping up and helping a friend out.

Loosing a loved pet will always leave a hole in a persons heart. But, things will get better and your property can eventually be replaced.

My condolences on your loss, pets are the toughest to replace,

glad to hear things are looking up for you.

My Car caught fire on July 25, and I am still looking for money to get new transportation,
mine was caused by a faulty blower switch, blow or wiring. the blower switch contacts were melted into the carpet, and the wire was burned in half.

While VW had taken credit for a "manufacturing" fault I am still waiting on their check to take the car away. they are still working on deciding if the optical drive in my laptop (which was in the back seat) and my prescription eyeglasses are going to be covered as part of the damages.

Man, that's a huge bummer. I can only imagine what it'd be like to lose all of that. Any word from the insurance company? Perhaps we should start a [H] donation pool to help replace whatever the insurance doesn't cover...

For the rest of us who haven't (yet) had a fire: Offsite backups are good. And a good fire safe for important documents (birth certificates, passports, social security cards, etc) is important.

While I have not lost everything I do know hard times. Recently been unemployed with two children to feed. Its a hard emotional toll I am sure but there are good people out there. Things will change and you will get on your feet again I am sure. You have what is most important and you have been given a machine to help you make the contacts and communication possible to get back what was lost. It will be hard work but if its not worth working for what is it really worth? GL to you and my sincerest sympathies.

I'm saddened by this story and I wish you the best as things continue to get better for you.

Also sorry to hear about Nibbler's passing... I know if that happened to any of my three pets I would be heart broken.

Sorry about what happened, and for your losses. I'm sure you'll be back on track in no time, just keep your head up! :)

It's great to know that Kyle and the [H] team were so thoughtful with you! High 5s to them!!

Really awful what you have been through mate. Best wishes and good luck getting things back on track. Well done Kyle & the [H] for coming through here.

Might I suggest creating a paypal site for donations? I'd be happy to spare a few bucks.

sorry to hear that as well, that is really some scary shit.. house fires are everyones worst nightmare, thankfully you and your girl came out ok..

let this be a lesson to all of you!

-don't overload your outlets!

-make sure your smoke/CM alarms are working and have fresh batteries!

-make sure you have a NEW and not expired extinguisher on every floor, and an extra in the kitchen!

-make sure you have an OFFSITE backup of your important data. buy a few $100 1TB externals, create truecrypt partitions or volumes on them and throw all of your digital photos, home videos, docs etc and give them to a close friend or relative. noone has access to that data but you so no worries there

-if you can afford it get ADT or a similar monitoring system. I have multiple smoke/CM detectors that are are monitored 24/7, the second one goes off the FD are notified and will be there in minutes. the peace of mind is worth the monthly fees.

good luck :)

I'm very sorry to hear about your property lose and the loss of your beloved cat. I can't imagine what that is remotely like. It's awesome to see Kyle come through in the way he has, it just affirms why I like being here at the [H] and that there are good people running it and behind it. I hope that you can find strength to rebuild. I know times are tough, but I hope you can find the help that you need. Take care.

Very unfortunate, my thoughts and prayers goto you and your girlfriend. Pets are impossible to replace. Glad to hear Kyle came through, too. Hopefully things go smooth with the adjusters, insurance people, etc.

Everything I've ever lost in life (material wise) has always been replaced with something better. Sorry about you're luck bud. :(

* Just went and checked the battery in my smoke alarm. D:

man I am so glad you two got out alive. House fires are no joking matter and mad props to [H] for helping you get back on your feet.

Its good to hear you both are alive and well.

Sorry to hear about your loss, especially for your poor pet. Hopefully there is a Nibbler v 2.0 somewhere you can claim.

I have to give props to Kyle for donating the computer. A computer is one hell of a multi purpose tool that will make everything a little easier for you the next few months. Besides communication and productivity you will atleast have a stand in for most of the entertainment sources you lost in the fire. Its also a huge expense that you won't have to pay for.

If you have insurance, still try and claim your destroyed computer. They will try and fight you on everything, and if they allow it, you will atleast have money for other things they may have shorted you on.

My condolences. Losing everything must be the toughest thing fate can throw your way, and is only surpassed by the passing of your beloved Nibbler. I hope your girl and you can find back to normality quickly, although some things are just lost forever.

I'm truly sorry to hear of what happened - I often worry about my hopefully-not overloaded sockets in our main entertainment room. Reminds me I need to get an outlet on another branch.

Good luck in putting your problems behind you, however long that may take.

Props to Kayle and gang for helping a person in need. Heartfelt condolences for your loss of your pet and belongings. I hope your road to recovery is short.

My family prays for your quick recovery. I am sorry you have lost a loved pet. I know house fires are a hard thing. I am still fighting mine from a year ago. *sigh*

It brings me hope that the [H] helped you out in this time of great need. Long live the [H]. Lets all go out and buy a ratpad or two. :)

good luck.

I am real sorry to hear about the disaster that happened to you guys. It sounds like an absolute nightmare! I hope you will be strong in the next few months, it sure will require what will seem like an almost impossible effort to rebuild and re establish your lives from a situation like this. Take one day at a time, plan your steps and take joy in the little victories as you go through this. Well meaning thoughts from Denmark.

Mith-
I may be silly for asking, but there was a monitor included in that, right? If not, I have a spare 19" wide that I can let go.

You don't have any insurance? Loosing everything sucks bad, however if you have insurance that should help out a lot.

In my experience insurance is a gamble. I think keeping the money you would have spent on insurance and putting it in the bank would be more helpful.

Looking at insurance as a gamble is never a good thing. You are paying for peace of mind if something should go wrong (and when it does, its usually big).
I look at it this way: If what you own (including a house/apartment/condo thats being rented) equals more than 40% of your annual salary, then you should have insurance. If you dont, you are stuck with rebuilding everything over the next couple of years if something should arise. That is not the greatest posistion to be put in, ever.

Mith- Im sorry about what happened. Condolences for your lost pet. Hopefully you guys can get back on your feet soon.
Props to Kyle and [H] for helping out in their time of need

Let us know where you live man. If you are local to any of us, I'm sure we can try to help out in any way we can. I'm glad you and the gf are ok.... in the end that is what truly matters. Sorry about 'nibbler' too, I know pets are impossible to replace.

Do you have a Paypal account or anything we can possibly donate to to help get you going again?

Did you have Renter's Insurance or Home Owners Insurance on the duplex?

I really appreciate all the support guys and greatly appreciate the offers to help. I am in the Houston area but to be honest guys I really couldnt accept any more help, It was actually really unlike me to even ask kyle but looking at the cost to rebuild my system just to the specs it was at and my empty bank account after replacing everything, getting a new place, and new bumber, hood, mirrors, and grill for her car as she was home and the fire trucks blocked her car in. It actually tripped me out seeing how it melted a car that was a solid 10 feet away.Fortunantly I am employed at the convention center in town and despite the fact that the economy blows it turns out learning the nortel cs1000 UNIX system ad general cisco knowledge will still get you a shit job with no chance for any advancement thus dooming me to jockey this network for the forseeable future...Im rambling now arent I... so if any you l33t mofo's need a tech in the Houston area for any network or PBX(phone system) I am A+, N+, Shore-tel, Nortel, Iwatsu certified with a shitload of avaya and mitel experience. THAT WOULD REALLY HELP!!!!!

no no insurance, shit I had only been there a month and was sub-letting the place from a friend...uber suck
