So I am looking for a new primary drive in my desktop. 50-100 usd price rage. over 400 GB. Really looking for the fastest (and reliable) drive with those specs.

Thanks for your help.

WD 640GB or 1TB Black? Fast + Plenty of storage.

The absolute minimum for a hard drive is around $40 (that's for an 80GB with 2MB of cache) If you scale from a $40 minimum instead of a $0 minimum, the pricing of the 640GB doesn't look so out of place. 320GB drives go for around $50-55, so it does make sense.

Much of the costs of a hard drive are fixed - every drive has a controller board, actuator assembly, at least one platter, a casing, spindle motor, etc. The makers use as many common parts across product lines as possible to reduce costs.

If you can hold out a few days try monitoring the [H]ot|Deals forum. There was a $80 1.5tb Seagate 7200.11 there yesterday.

Is that 1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 plagued with the firmware bug or is it just the 7200.12? He said he need a fast drive with plenty of storage so I guess the WD Blacks would be the fastest over the 7200.11.. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The firmware bug has been over for a while now. I think your query reflects perfectly why the price is so low.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Still, for my own curiosity and knowledge which drive is faster?
