Colin Mcrae's Dirt for PC: $14.99 Fry's

Good luck one of the most realistic rally games out. It will wear you out. RIP Colin.

The driving in this game has a really good feel to it. Definitely fun.

Finally gave the game a whirl, and man, the graphics are amazing. I'm running it on a 32" 720P monitor 1360x768 ultra settings, and wow. Gameplay, also outstanding. $14.99 is a steal for this game. Awesome with a wheel.

My only complaint with the game is the initial disc check security issues. Issues seem to have gone after the 1.22 patch though.

I've played the ps3 demo for dirt and 360 and the graphics don't even come close to it's pc brother...Running a Q9550 at 3.2ghz and a 4890 though, so that's probably why ;)

It's been $15 for quite a long time now at Fry's B&M. It's a great deal for a great game.

Its actually $7.99 at Gamestop but I didn't tell ya that.

Patches:
v1.2 Full Upgrade: http://www.codemasters.com/downloads/details.php?id=29510

v1.22 "Disc Check" Patch (Really Starforce Removal): http://www.codemasters.com/downloads/details.php?id=36831

The v1.22 patch requires the v1.2 patch to be installed first. The v1.2 patch is a full upgrade from any previous version of the game.

** Edit: See Below ** Also, be aware that this game uses Starforce for its disc protection. I know there are a lot of folks who refuse to buy or support games with Starforce due to possible issues. I've also seen mention that the version of Starforce this game uses doesn't work on Win7. I'll have to break out my discs and install it tomorrow and see if it works. ** Edit: See Below **

EDIT --- BIG NOTE: Had a small case of insomnia - I just installed on Win7 x64 RC no problem. It looks like patch v1.22 removes Starforce entirely from the game:
Instructions:
1. Install the game from disc.
1a. DO NOT LAUNCH IT
2. Install Patch v1.2
3. Install Patch v1.22
4. Now go ahead and launch the game Starforce free...

Runs like greased goose shit on my Q9550 with 8GB of RAM. This game loves cores and Mhz. Puts the old E6420 system I ran this on originally to shame.

Game plays fine on v1.2, don't think I'm going to bother with the patch, as I can play single player and multi just fine. Running vista x64.:D

oh it'll run fine without the 1.22 patch, it's just there for people who are uncomfortable with having starforce on their computer. I personally have had the game running patchless with no issue, but I haven't been able to get it to patch past 1.2 because the file reports crc errors or something. (vista hp x64). No biggie though.

Anyway, I bought the game at gamestop a long time ago for 8 bucks, which blew my mind at the time. Most definitely a [H]ot deal on a GREAT game.

If I'm not wrong Monster Madness is around the same price if not cheaper at gamestop too; definitely worth a pick up also while you're there if you're budget bin diving.:)

edit: I stand corrected! To get the 1.22 patch to install, you need to allow dirt to run and install the SF drivers first.

It's not about being uncomfortable with Starforce. It's about the fact that the version of Starforce in this game is not compatible with Win7 32 or 64 bit. Starforce also causes all kinds of hell with things like NERO, Daemon Tools or Alcohol virtual drives. If I don't have to uninstall my disc image mounting apps for Starforce to run the game I'm sure as hell not going to.

I'll just wait till it goes on sale on Steam and then I might pick it up. That will take care of the problem without any need to even temporarily install starforce.

I don't use daemon tools or whatever so I don't have a problem yet.

As for graphics in this game, definitely just as good as Grid, which is saying a lot.

Dirt is not realistic.............

the proverbial fly in the ointment :p
Unless you have a wrx/sti, evo, bmw X, or any # of outstanding RWD cars, plus a local community with tracks/dirtroads/unpoliced valleys, forests, mountains or plains... the game may in fact be a very suggest-able alternative to (slightly-sub) 100% realism :)

Yah, I know a guy that drives a 911 and he plays need for speed, go figure. I hate need for speed.

NFS:Hot Pursuit had some fun moments.. vettes/lambos 'stacked' on top of Crown vics, just waiting for you to round the corner. the fateful scream 'AAaaahhhhhhh' as they take a turn too wide trying to keep up with you :) the one chick always had a tough, admiral spirit when screaming "You can't outRuuNNnn the Poliice !" heehee

OK....... i guess in your opinion it is a realistic simulation game? have you played gtr2? idk if you are claiming dirt is a great simulation game.... I guess if you are, agree to disagree........

 Wait a second here. Lemme see if I understand.

 Your saying Dirt is more like Nascar Thunder 2003 or such from EA Trash.

 While the real comparison of a sim on the nascar side of things would be Nascar Racing 2003 Season by Sierra/Papyrus (I actually have a copy MINT in box on ebay now) :D

 Your trying to compare a Rally Racing game with A sports car game?

 I think your:confused: .

:cool:Yes SimBin has made an outstanding sim for the sports car scene, but GTR2 in no where near the same ball park for comparison to a Rally game. Dirt is by far the best rally sim out there. Along with Dirt 2 on its way soon.

:( RIP Colin

First of all where did you get nascar from? do you think gtr2 is a nascar game? I have a logitech g25 and dirt, it doesn't even have a working clutch. How can that be considered realistic? Do rally drivers not have clutches? I was comparing the games based on their simulation... physics is still physics....

What a dramatic post.....

Like I said, agree to disagree

That states I know what I'm talking about. GTR2 is from Sim Bin Development group. It is a sports car sim. Not a rally sim.

You bring a sim in that is a total different genre of sim and compare it to a rally game. That doesn't make sense. The fact if the game uses a clutch pedal or not is not a Physics aspect. Its a sim immersion aspect. Most rally racers use techtronic (sequential) gear boxes which doesn't call for the use of a clutch for shiffting. Pop it up or down to shift. Since you keep bringing up the simulation aspect of the game in relation to your controller. If I'm not mistaken the G25 is a Fork shifter meaning you have to pull out down move over then up. (Reverse for downshifting. Shoot me if wrong, but you don't have plates to change out the way it shifts. Much like the Force RS from act labs which allows you externally to use a clutch whether the game supports clutch use or not. Along with that many different plate configurations to adapt to the type of game being played. So yes you can set it up to have a Techtronic gearbox and yes use a clutch pedal if you so choose to drive a rally car unlike a rally car.

I'm sure you will find enjoyment in the game whether it be for sim use or just to screw off and drive around trying to find your clutch pedal. No matter what controller you use I'm sure it will work just fine and do what its designed to do. Which is allow the end user to control their vehicle in what ever driving game they see fit.

Back to topic at hand.
Colin Mcrae Dirt at Frys for $14.99 and Gamestop for $7.99 its well worth what ever you spend on it.

Career mode is pretty challenging, and will definitely take many hours if you decide to pass each difficulty level(better to start at the lowest level for each track to build more money). I'm just using the momo force racing wheel and really like the feel thus far. Graphically this is the best I've seen in a racing game. If you got a 4870 and up you will be wowed. Using a 4890 and no lag whatsoever at ultra settings, it's so smooth. Can't wait to get Dirt 2, I here they are using DX11 for that one. It'll take me a while to be done with this one so I'm sure Dirt 2 will be 14.99 by the time I pick it up :D

As far as simulation, it has car damage, audio effects are good, graphics are realistic, etc. As for the technical aspect, I'm not really qualified, and probably no one in this thread is unless they are a pro rally racer to make a fair comparison. This is a good video on Ken Block's take on Dirt 2 though. He makes some comments about road transitions and how that affects car handling etc. hinting at realism.
