Catalyst 9.7 released!!

Apparently not in XP...
I updated from 9.6 rebooted and can't enter Windows, and can't even enter safe mode, it gives me the blue screen, thankfully I can boot just fine when I choose "Enable VGA Mode" (which indicates the problem is with the display driver), uninstalled Catalyst, restart and reinstall Catalyst 9.7

Looks like the new CCC interface is just for Vista and 7, but not in XP... ?

same here, I usually get several frame drops in GTA, the lowest used to be 15fps, which made me stop playing GTA for fun for a while (frame drops are no fun),
now it's stable at 45 to 50 fps, with lowest frame rate is around 35fps and maximum 60fps (of course, with v-sync on).
a little texture problem at first start, but now it runs fine, probably caching problem.

Which driver were you using before?

I gotta say going from 9.2 to 9.7 my framerate dropped from 60 fps (v-sync) down to mid-20s in Source games. Other games have some framerate drops but not as severe as Source-engine based for me. Reverting back seems to fix it so I'll wait for next update.

EDIT: Reinstalled 9.7 and this time turned off Edge-Detect AA in this release. FPS went from 25 back to 80-100 range now (v-sync off).

I had this same problem. One of the settings in AA was switched (might have been me) and my FPS in L4D were like 30 and I was like 'wtf?' and then switched it back and ta-da, problem solved.

That's strange I've had my Edge-Detect AA turned on to 12x before and never had this issue. Perhaps earlier driver releases AA wasn't working through control panel.

I upgraded from 8.9s and every other time I start my PC it freezes right after it boots up. I see my desktop just can't do much. I can move the mouse around for a little bit then that freezes. Clicking on things doesn't do anything either.

Edge detect AA knocked a solid 100fps off my L4D performance with 9.7. Awesome job, ATi, even had me looking at new power supplies for a second.

I found an odd little problem. Cat 9.7 seems to break Vsync functionality when using Sven's Glide Wrapper for Diablo II. No matter what settings I used Vsync would not function, and there was horrible image tearing even with the framerate locked. I went back to Cat 9.6 and all is well. Just a heads up for any of you guys that may still play Diablo II. :)

Lol I had 150 FPS then turned on Edge-Detect AA to 12x and it drops to the 40s.

There's some games where Edge Detect won't hamper the performance by much like in old Far Cry, Half Life 2 and its sequels, and in GRID, but in other games like in Street Fighter 4, wow, a game that's not demanding at all and it drops below the 40's.

Obviously something has changed. I thought Edge-Detect AA was supposed to take LESS of a performance hit than regular AA.

Installed over 9.6, been working just dandy so far. Noted a bit of improvement in the original Crysis. Well, I had it installed, so just went ahead and tested it, didn´t check fps though.

Ok going from 4xAA to 12xCFAA (Edge-detect) it goes from average of 46 FPS to 38 FPS. This doesn't explain my average of 150FPS dropping to 40 FPS for Source games.

I got the same results as you from the Orange Box bench.

144.32 with 8x Box
38.52 With 24x Edge-Detect

Maybe someone with older drivers or an X2 could post some benches.

Did you read the linked article?

Edge-detect has lower performance than regular AA. Always has. The 'perk' is that it's only slightly lower performance than regular AA for many times improved quality. But it's always been lower.

If edge detect was performing better than regular AA for you before, I'd say it was just plain not working, and the performance drop is because it IS working, now. Maybe there is a bug, dunno, but don't rule out that it wasn't working properly before.

You're not understanding.
4x REGULAR (Box) AA is = 4x MSAA
4x Edge-Detect AA = 12x CFAA

The Age of Conan reviewed in the CFAA intro shows an average of 46 FPS drops to 39 when switching from Box to Edge-Detect. That's about a 15% drop not a near 75% drop.

Switching to 24x CFAA on Conan shows it drop to 38 FPS. While my 40 fps drops to 25 fps which indicates it definitely does not like edge-detect at all.

NOTE: I have switched to the 4890 and experience the same exact issue. Catalyst 9.2 did not have this issue but I do not know about 9.3-9.6.
