I'm sure alot of you may already know this and or have a nice CAD set up or the like, but I thought I should post this up here for those that are not sure where to begin with visually creating a case from ground up or modifying an existing design. Best of all it's free :)

Sketchup - 2D/3D imaging software. Completely safe DL. Somewhat like a watered down CAD/3D SM for dummies lol. Very simple and sufficient.

Anyhow I noticed some questions lately here about this so hopefully this will come in handy for some :)

If you guy's have alternatives please post them up.

I think some folks have been using it for a while. OofC_S7v7N is already working on his own case. There was also another member who drew up his own desk.

Yeah that's why I stated "I'm sure you all already know about this and or others" However I saw a few guys recently that asked what they can use for drawing up a case and planning a mod so I thought I and hopefully others would put their favs here :)

Just one of those "BTW" threads for the new dudes or those that are searching for this on here or the net (thread should pop up)

Sketchup is an insanely powerful tool. It's so simple to learn...hell I learnt it in an hr or so.

Does anyone have any basic case templates that they've done in sketchup so far? I've been trying to learn sketchup but just haven't had the time. I figure that playing around with someone elses case template would be alot faster and easier than downloading a house or a car or some other arbitrary 3d model and trying to learn from that.

Hey Gang,

Great thread, I'm Scooby at the other forum and one of the contributors to SCC site. You should make this the SU thread. I know their are some great SU artist here. I'm no guru but I'll help when I can if you have a question about SU.

Like Brashen, said it is a very simple 3D app to use and yes very powerful once you have mastered it. I'm still learning myself everyday.

Here is computer case concept design I did for a competition. Model created in SU and rendered in KT. Hope you like.;)

Damn just when I was starting to get a bit more comfortable with SU you guys going and introduce me to an amazing but complex tool for rendering my models.

I just tried to render the case I have been working on and thought I set up the KT materials in my SU model properly before exporting and trying to render it but it still seems to be rendering with the materials that we originally set in SU.

For example I was using the metal surface in SU to represent my polished aluminum parts of my case. I set those parts to KT's silver witch looked like a polished chrome in the pics I seen but when experted and rendered it still looks like SU metal.

Anyway I guess I will figure it out eventually.

But I do have one question about KT. Is there anyway to have a piece rendered to look like carbon fiber?

Yup, there's a carbon fibre material pack around. Google or the Kerkythea website would be your friend for that though, because I can't remember where I got it from.

I created this withing 30 minutes. I have never used the program before. But its damn fun! I also have no experience /w rendering models, creating objects, etc..

subbed :)

ive been using solidworks (another 3D modeling program) for this job, and it is NOT a good tool for it. huge pita. switching to sketchup for my next model. fortunately im past the design and into the building phase now.
