I am debating on what card to get. I want to get a second GPU to fold on (and have for gaming should I need it).
I am deciding between a 4850 512mb, 8800 GT 512mb, and a 8800 GTS 640mb.
I want to know which one will preform the best and give the best PPD, and what kind of PPD should I be expecting.

Thanks!

after looking this morning and not when I'm 1/2 asleep, 8800GT.

ATI cards just don't fold as well as the NV cards, they should be able to, but because of driver issues, nope.

The 8800GTS 640mb only has 96 shaders. If you want a GTS then get the 512mb(G92) it has 112 as does the 8800GT 512mb(G92)

I second the recommendation to NOT get a 8800 GTS 640mb. I have one and don't fold on it, because it runs too hot even with the fan at 100%. (It does fold, but it the temps make me uncomfortable.) The G92 cards run much cooler, as well as having more shaders.

The 8800GT is the best out of those three cards. However, you should know that if you're running Vista, you can't use ATI cards and nVidia cards in the same system unless you use older XP drivers. If this is for your main system, you may not want to do that.

8800GT is by far the best performing card out of all those.. and overclock nicely..

for the price diff tho, If you can score a 8800 GTS (g92) the one with 512MB, then I'd snatch that. Better than the 8800 GT for gaming and has a bit more shaders too for folding.

But youll have better luck of finding a cheap 8800 GT than a GTS...

I'd still go for a single GTX 295 sell all other cards. That one will out produce any combo you put in there. Assumes of course you can stomach the cost.

he only has 1 card I think, if you were to sell and go one card, Id suggest a 260-275 (the most shaders version you could get with your money)

295 is way to big a price considering he's looking for 8800 gt priced cards.

I paid 120$ for a GTX260(192shdr) , and 65$ for a 8800 GT
If you sold your current card and added 20-30 $$ I'm sure you could get a 260 (212shder) or best off a 275 (240 shdr)

Well I'm not looking to spend a whole lot, this will be going into my secondary rig for folding. However, if the card will preform considerably better than my 4650 I may swap it and use it for folding.

Thanks a bunch for the input.

im not sure about better, but if you want to end up with 2 cards and not spend a lot of money, stick with the 8800 GTS (512 version remember) or a 8800 GT

Well the 8800 GT 512 is actually a 8800GTS 512mb G92. So guess it worked out good.

the 8800 GTS and 8800 GT are diff cards, just because they are both g92 doesnt mean anything
the GTS has all the shaders (at that time) which was 128

The GTS WIIL out perform the GT in folding and gaming, period

the only card that is a GT but is actually a GTS is the 9800 GT + (or something like that) . The 98 is just a refresh of the 88 series
8800 GT > 9800 GT
8800 GTS > 9800 GTX
There is 1 card (that I know of) that breaks these rules. There is a 9800 GT (called plus or someting) that actually has all the shaders and in fact is just a underclocked 9800 GTX

however, I dont think you will be disapointed in either card :)

Well since Vaulter's deal is gone, there's always this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130325
eVGA dual slot cooler 8800GTS 512 with 128SP for $109 w/ a $20MIR...

Unfortunately, the PSU on my work computer (my only free PCI-E slot) doesn't have the 6-pin connector, or I'd have already ordered it... Although the 8600GT in my gaming rig could go to work, and this could go there... Hmmm...

damn near every card these days comes with atleast 1 6 pin adapter (from molex , the 4 pins everywhere in your case)

dont let that stop you from throwing money toward the horde! :)

EDIT
just checked, that one has it too

Yeah, but I'd rather have the better card at home for gaming than at work! :D Besides, don't you need 2 4 pin molex for one 6 pin adapter? My work box (a crappy Dell) only has 3 - 1 for the CD, 1 for the HD, and 1 free. I'd have to get a splitter to make the single into two, then recombine them and pray I have enough wattage... Of course, that IS pretty [H]ard, so I may have to try it!

Good luck Jathanis with makin' one 6 pin connecter out of a single split 4 pin molex. I was under the impression using two 4 pin molex lines gave you more amperage  Would someone please clarify why just a split 4 pin molex would work just as good as two separate 4 pin molex :)

Oh yeah, until I fubared my PNY 8800GT I was pretty happy with it, now I'm holding out for a GTX275 (speaking of holding, I'm even thinking of holding up a gas station, only kiddin')

Mucho good luck and please post your results :D

Two reasons: splitting it up across two molex connectors distributes the load across more wires, and also, a PCI-E power connector needs two +12V wires and three grounds, whereas a single molex connector has only one +12V wire and two grounds. So you need two molexes to provide enough wires for the PCI-E connector (or you need to split one molex to provide the extra wires).

Okay, so my 8800 GTS just came in the mail and I am wonder, which card is going to get better FPS for games? My 8800 or my HD 4650?

The 8800GTS will be a lot faster. The 4650 is closer to a 48SP 9600GSO or a 9600GT in terms of performance.

Good, because it has to go into my main rig lol. The dell doesn't fit dual slots and has no PCIE power plug.

Okay got the card installed (had to move HDD out of the way), Latest drivers installed, and Reinstalled GPU folding. When I launch the GPU folder it encounters and error and has to close. Any idea on this? I delete the work folder so I dont know whats up.

Yes I have now. I am having the same issue on my dell with XPP 32bit, HD4650 is giving an error everytime I try to fold on it now. I went and deleted the folders after uninstalling, I also went through the registry and still has issues (didnt install cuda on that cuz its ATI) But I am having the 8800GTS not fold either because it is not wanting to run. I keep getting the error message.

How will that help? It was working fine when I used the HD4650 on my vista system. Then I switched it to the 8800GTS and now it wont fold. And on the other system I had it folding before but not it wont work.

I went through and totally cleansed F@H GPU off my vista system. I even downloaded the different version for Nvidia cards. Some how it still knows my user name and team number after cutting it out of the registry and programfiles folder. How the hell can it do that? Do I need to restart between re-installs?

I figured it out. The F@H creates another location with work files and CFGs. You have to click the expert link to get to them. Deleted them and now it is working fine :).
PS. Holy cow this 8800GTS is so much faster.

so you glad you got that? It should work real good for you, and should be around 5k PPD or so, not sure after this refresh
