I want to upgrade the memory in my T60 laptop, so I want to get some PC2-5300 200-pin memory.

Is Corsair ValueSelect any good, or does it use no-name generic chips? Would Crucial be better (in this case it would be about 25% more expensive) - I heard Crucial manufactures their own chips? I'm open to other suggestions. Thanks.

I'd try to stick with modules made with chips branded by a real chip company, like Micron, Samsung, Elpida, ProMos, Power Chip, Nanya, or Hynix, because no-name chips are UTT (rejects) or home sliced (Kingston buys wafers and cuts and packages them) and don't seem to be tested as strictly. The last Crucial notebook memory I bought had been made with Elpida chips.

Corsair ValueSelect is the one value brand that I'd recommend. I rarely go with value ram these days due to the insanely low prices on even decent, moderate speed ram.

I have two gigs in my notebook of that ram and its been working great for the last 1.5years. Never had a problem.

I've used ValueSelect ram from Corsair in customer's desktops and laptops for years. This is the best of the best when it comes to non-heatsinked 'value' ram. I'm not sure why Larrymoencurly thinks these are rejects necessarily. If you talk to Corsair tech support about them, they go through the same basic stress-testing as most memory they sell. Granted, the high-end overclocker's dream ram is put to a higher standard. Hence the "value" stamp. You'll be fine with any Corsair Value ram. Don't forget, the warranty is still with the company... And Corsair's warranty is second-to-none in the memory world.

I love Corsair. Their ValueSelect memory is fine. Don't expect to OC it or anything. Don't put it in a gaming machine. For a budget or basic system, it's a reliable solution.

Thanks guys. I can get it for about 25-30% cheaper than other brands.

I'll do some memtest86 (should I use memtest86 or memtest86+ ?) and Prime95 tests just to make sure it is OK. I won't be overclocking anything.

memtest86+. The regular memtest86 isn't free if I remember correctly.

Even Corsair support asks people to run memtest86+ during troubleshooting.
