Well my game has had this issue for a long time... it freezes mid game with a continuous sound loop. The only way back in is to CTRL-ALT-DEL back to the desktop and click on the running game and I return no problem.

Here is the issue, and their "Answer" didn't stop my game from freezing.

Just curious as to what you guys did to fix this issue. I have my shader quality to medium and everything seems stable now... but that is a pretty lame way to fix this issue. There has to be another way besides sacrificing video quality! Ive been to multiple forums and couldn't any solid answers/fixes.

Running Vista x86 w/185.85 driver

EDIT: now running win7 RC1 64bit and same results, but this time TF2 does the sound stuttering crash.

Most for the looping I get is usually server side as my friends tend to get it concurrently, though it's usually just for a couple seconds and mostly at the beginning of the first level.

I also would not rule out stability issues.

Have you tried disabling the multi-core enhancements?

Yea I tried stock CPU speed and tried disabling everything including multi-core enhancements.

this has been happening to a lot of people since the last update. I can barely play the game now even with multicore off and SLI off.

Few of my friends are in the same boat. Maybe we can play for 15-30 minutes and thats it. sometimes not even that.

i havent been having any problems whatsoever even with the Macho Madness and Tourettes guy sound packs installed. w00t for being lucky?

I haven't had any problems... strange.

Win. Have you seen the add-on that replaces the background video with Michael Jackson's Thriller?

DoD:Source would do this to me constantly. Thought it might have been my router or PC, but upgrading both and moving to a different internet resulted in the same problem. Haven't played it in a while but I remember it eventually started happening less. This is really the only Valve/Steam online game I've ever played.

My TF2 and L4D would do this all the time.

Unfortunately Vista screwed up my XP one day, and I had to reinstall lately. Ever since (but kept my Steam folder on a different drive), it's been working fine with no crashes in TF2, DoD:S, or L4D.

lol I did this. Good stuff

I did this too.. :p:p

the only problem I'm having lately is it will just crash for no reason, except sometimes when this happens the steam platform says it is syncing left 4 dead

nope, didnt even know it existed....now im going to have to look for it lol

Perhaps this has already been tried, but can you change your multi-display/mixed gpu acceleration (NVIDIA control panel - Global Settings) to 'Single Display Performance Mode' from 'Multiple display Performance Mode' and see what happens?

I had a looping issue similar to that where the game just froze...since changing that setting, everything seems fine now.

Thanks for the tip, trying this now.

edit: was fine for about half hour then sound loop crash :(

I solved it by slightly lowering my GPU overclock..Worked flawlessly since..

hmm... lemme check out river tuner, that would be cool if it had application OC profiles so it wouldn't de-clock itself with any other game.

Oh wow! I kept thinking it's my computer, and I've been trying to fix it for days until I read this. lol

you would figure valve would have enough time to fix this stupid problem since hl2 first came out.. yet people still have it in every source engine game.. stupid valve

I get this problem too... but only once in a while. Its weird, and only happens in l4d.

I had this issue with TF2 a while back. I fixed it with 180.43 nvidia driver. E8400, 4GT, GTX260, XP32. L4D is solid.

Thanks, will try that.

edit: no more looping sound, but started to get StackHash_fd00 crash and left4dead.exe appcrash

:(

bump for a solution too. Have same problem - e8500 @ 4.1ghz, xfx 9800gtx+, 8gb RAM, Gigabyte EP45-UD3P. Get the endless sound loop, can usually ctrl-alt-del out to task manager, and then go back to L4D and it'll start up again (if I'm not dead when I get back). Sometimes gotta close l4d and steam and restart.

I beat the hell out of my overclock in stability testing, so I believe it is as stable as I think it is. :D I have tried running at stock speed on the CPU too, same problems.

Had this happen to me over the weekend for the first time. e8400 @ 3.6ghz, 4870. crtl-alt-del brought me back to my desktop. Game quit though. My system has been stable since I built it over a year ago. Wondering if it could be the soundcard. X-Fi Fatality.

Doubt its the sound card.

Just wanna let you guys know that this indeed isn't just a nvidia thing. I popped in my new Radeon 4770 and same thing, only this time I crash more frequently.

I thought it was a chipset thing and was about to get the P45 but seems like Mackowitz gets the same thing too. I out of options. I've tried just about everything. COME ON VALVE!

I thought I was the only one with this issue. I tried some of the solutions posted and none really help my situation. I would like to note that this happens sporadically and sometimes does not affect hours of gameplay.

For me it's the "wake up" of the HDD/s, I have six and energy saving is on. Alt+Tab works.

Yea for me I can be playing hours of Survival Mode without a hitch then all of a sudden I loop crash every 2-5 minutes... or vice versa. Pretty annoying.

Did they add new content to L4D yet. Casuse after 300 hours of play time I have no intrest in going back to that game without a bunch of new maps to play.

the only new map is the lighthouse for survivor other then that nope, none better wait for the sdk and all custom maps to be released.

Turning off Multicore Rendering in Video options should fix your problem. Now I know what your thinking it will lower fps if you do this. This is true it will. I had this problem on XP and it turned out to be the latest nvidia drivers. I downgraded to 182.50 and it allowed me to keep multicore enabled. Again this is for XP so idk if that's why you have a problem but it wouldn't hurt to try.

I've tried what you suggested with Vista32 and win7-64 and no go. Just installed my new mobo (used to have a p35-DS3L) and now I have the sound loop stuttering in TF2 as well... awesome!

I realize this is an old thread but I have the same issue after installing my new Az forte. I threw my old audigy zs back in and the sound loop crash went away. I got a BSOD and it pointed to the Nvidia driver but I'm pretty sure thats not the case.

Have tried Azun's drivers and Creative's drivers to no avail. Other games actually play fine (i've tried MW2, dragon age and borderlands so far). But l3d, tf2 and hl2 all crash with the sound loop.
