We have Exchange 2007 entprise here at work.

I need to start doing historical email journaling.

Our Exchange server doesn't have the disk space to put all the journaling on it. Can I save the journals to a UNC path or something? Our SAN is pretty filled up. I do have a server with A LOT of extra disk space. Can I use it for this purpose?

If you can install Exchange on the second server, that would be easiest. Just put the journal mailbox on that server, and all journaling reports will be redirected there. Not exactly the cheapest option. :)

However, I think you can send the journal reports to any SMTP address, so I suppose you could set up a linux box or something with sendmail, and send the journal stuff to a mail enabled contact that just forwards to an account on the linux box.

As for redirecting to a file directly, not that I know of. Maybe a daily/weekly exmerge to dump the journal mailbox to a PST file on a network drive?

Edit:
Scratch the ExMerge, though I love the tool. Export-Mailbox support PSTs in 2007 SP1 so would be a better option.

Ok...so do the journaling on the actual server and then do weekly merges onto the other server.

Got it.

Or I could install something like Starwind SAN on the server with lots of storage and then mount some space as a SAN on the mail server?

Openfiler is very nice but if you're still looking at StarWind it's nice as well. I own a license and use it, haven't had a problem and works great.

Adding a second server would create a second copy, sure... However I'm not sure that it would journal for HISTORICAL data?

What's the budget?
I'm not aware of anything free to do this (And not sure if you'd want to rely on something "on your own" for legal purposes...)
