Actually....apple is in a LOT of trouble. While people might be able to justify the 100% price increase in their MP3 player for a slightly better SW package (aka iTunes) and a bit sleaker design....people are NOT going to tolerate that in the current economy for computers. Apple laptops and desktops are going to get HAMMERED this upcoming fall for school purchases. People will be spendig more time hunting and comparing features and power...and no way will they shell out another $1k for ego.
Apple is not in trouble. They have something like 25 Billion dollars in cash. They can weather the current downturn, and when things turn around, there will be people willing to pay more for a Mac.
As some articles have pointed out, if they lower their prices, they'll never be able to raise them again....so they'll just leave the prices up and take the hit for the next year or so.
That strategy mirrors Abecrombie and Fitch, which almost never puts anything on sale, because they don't want to devalue the brand.
