New Windows Ad Incenses Apple Fans

Actually....apple is in a LOT of trouble. While people might be able to justify the 100% price increase in their MP3 player for a slightly better SW package (aka iTunes) and a bit sleaker design....people are NOT going to tolerate that in the current economy for computers. Apple laptops and desktops are going to get HAMMERED this upcoming fall for school purchases. People will be spendig more time hunting and comparing features and power...and no way will they shell out another $1k for ego.

Apple is not in trouble. They have something like 25 Billion dollars in cash. They can weather the current downturn, and when things turn around, there will be people willing to pay more for a Mac.

As some articles have pointed out, if they lower their prices, they'll never be able to raise them again....so they'll just leave the prices up and take the hit for the next year or so.

That strategy mirrors Abecrombie and Fitch, which almost never puts anything on sale, because they don't want to devalue the brand.

Seriously, is it impossible to think that Apple actually has a place in the market? I'm not saying Apple is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've tried pointing out positives and minuses to all choices.
If Apple doesn't meet your needs to purchase their stuff, if they do and you want on then good for you.
No reason to be completely closed-minded.

I don't know how anyone can justify a 1000+ laptop.
I wouldn't spend that much either. My 2 laptops (17" Dell and 12.1" HP tablet) *together* cost under $800 after tax and upgrades. :p

I don't know how anyone can justify a 1000+ laptop.

Lots of people can for the simple fact that everyone has different needs. I bought a macbook simply because I wanted to try something different. When I get bored with this, I'll buy something else. I'm not loyal to any particular brand considering I've owned a laptop from nearly every major manufacturer so I'll buy what I want regardless.

I just want to know why so many people (especially Apple zealots-- you know-- the really crazy ones) are taking these ads so personal. Must be hitting below the belt. :D

"The truth hurts... maybe not as much as riding a bicycle without a seat, but it hurts just the same..." :D

Gotta love the Police Story movies, hilarious from start to finish.

Most people will take something like this personal if they see merit in it but don't want to admit it. They are the close minded type who refuse to look at options, and simply believe that they are right no matter what. They have to defend and take action in fear that they will look ignorant.

Because my laptop absolutely, under no circumstances, cannot be down for more than a couple of hours due to school and business. It needs to be able to survive repeated falls onto concrete and hardwood floors from chest height, and be able to survive small liquid spills. It needs to have enough power to transcode video quickly, and 1TB of space to store that video. It needs to be light enough to be carried in a backpack 8 hours a day, and have enough battery life to last through 4 hours of classes straight without being plugged in.

In other words, I had no option besides a $1000 laptop, a Thinkpad T61 (a year ago).

Hope you have a backup if it gets stolen ;)

But seriously ok there are exceptions, to clairfy what I mean is like the majority of users have very small usage set that heck a netbook can fill. I have seen various justified work experiences where certain job functions required (marketing/CAD is very demanding), but that's such a minority its not even funny.

Agreed, most people would do fine with the power netbooks offer, I think some just want a slightly or much larger screen. On campus we are starting to see more and more netbook users. We have one faculty member on campus with a $1000.00+ laptop and it's a Dell Precision, he's a CAD instructor and the Director of the School of Technology. He teaches, grades, and travels so he needs that kind of power.

Apple charges a lot for their computers I'll give em that. But the software that they give out is very high quality and makes the computer worth buying.

I like the way that this author writes about Apple:
http://ffwtech.com/2009/04/the-new-windows-campaign-is-heartless/
http://ffwtech.com/2009/03/why-apple-is-suffering-and-how-to-fix-it/

It makes sense that Apple charges a lot for their products, but this new ad is kind of a cheapshot against apple. Why waste advertisement time talking down about the competition instead of boosting up your products like how Windows computers come in so many varieties.... I dunno I just lost respect for Microsoft.

Dude you're an idiot, Apple has been making cheapshots against Microsoft for years now with their ads, and Microsoft has been taking it like a champ. But now all of the sudden Microsoft decides to return fire after years of Apple commercials bashing them, and all of the sudden they are taking cheapshots, and "wasting" advertising to talk down the competition. You've suddenly lost all respect for Microsoft because they are returning fire?

You can't support Apple and their ads bashing Microsoft, but then be appalled Microsoft would make an ad bashing macs. Mac users are idiots

Agreed, almost all of their "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" ads have been cheap shots. Most of the things those commercials said were simply not true, and preyed upon stereotypes.

I think they are fun to watch. Enjoy them, they are funny. (Yes both Apple and Microsoft ads)
It's marketing, remember that, and do your own investigating. Doesn't matter if your talking computers or about Might Putty lol!

I own a mac mini and an iphone, but I am not a MAC, I own a pc laptop and make a living as MS Software Engineer, but I am not a PC, I play around w/ linux for fun and I am not a penguin, I enjoyed the Im a Mac ads, I enjoy the find a pc and keep it adds.

But what I enjoy the most is watching oversensitive, self important, and self absorbed MAC fan ctch a serious case of BUTT-HURT over these ads..... hahahahahaha

I love my MacBook Pro, but can't stand the bed-wetters who get all worked up over these Mac vs. PC ads. Most of the ads are entertaining, some are stupid. Mac has the all-time, greatest computer ad ever with their "1984" commercial that ran only once during the Super Bowl.

Mmm... 240SX.

Oh this was about the computers... sorry :)

That was the first thing I noticed.

An amazingly clean / good condition S13 from the brief glimpse we get, and in a rather rare (though not rarest) color too.

On the one hand, anyone who's into 240SX's knows S13 owners are poor, its the S14 owners who can afford the expensive mods :D So him being excited to get a free laptop even though its "on a budget" would be believable.

On the other hand, the chances of said person owning such a mint S13 are highly unlikely, unless it was repainted very well, in which case he has money, but we know S13 owners don't have money, so ... ;)

I honestly have to question if the car was his in real life :D

( 240SX Stereotypes aside, I've had a S13 for years in horrible exterior shape and various states of running / upgraded, though now I'm not so broke anymore I'm slowly getting it where I want it... and have a bought-new 08 Mazda as a daily :D )

I do enjoy the commercials both sides make, but I quite dislike the "news" articles made after each new ad debuts. Aside from being blatantly biased and incredibly inaccurate, the commercials ARE rather comical. Oh, and windows ftw! :)

My experience with HP has been rather pleasant, I type this on a compaq nc6400 I won in a contest and it's robust enough to handle photoshop and intermediate gaming. I do have the expansion battery pack attached to it, and the battery lasts ~9 hours under load and about 16 while idle.

I know each and every manufacturer faces isses and quality deficiencies. Perhaps what I've seen is rather a result of so many HP computers in use.
I had a co-worker ask me to take a look at her laptop in my off time. Within a few minutes of googling the strange symptoms I came across a KB article from HP. Verified the model number and told her it was an extended warranty issue that HP was handling. Apparently the fan would not stay on long enough to cool the system. As a result her wireless card was overheating. HP denied time and time again that this wasn't the issue with her laptop. Everything matched up on the website when I identified her model laptop with the issue. Finally they agreed to take the laptop and perform the warranty work. She sent it off sometime last October and just got it back last month!
That's one freak story and I'm not sure how she handled things with HP , but that is seriously a long time. I've obviously spoken with her since then, and she's as happy as can be expected. The computer works as needed and her wifi isn't going out on her.

If you want to spend a few extra bucks and get something better for it, well, even if I was only using Windows I'd still be using a Macbook, let's put it that way. :)

hundred of dollars is not "a few extra bucks" ;)

How so? Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Apple fanboy...but is this just more [H] propaganda or is there some truth behind it?

Is HARD full of propaganda?

Is HARD full of propaganda?

I agree with his general sentiment. I saw that ad a few days ago and failed to see any apoplexy going on in other threads about it. I read this thread because I was equally bemused by the headline. [H] has great unbiased hardware reviews and I've been coming here for years but this thread is a cesspool of fanboys, on both sides. I always thought [H] was above promoting this kind of shit flinging tbh.

Less sensationalist news topics and more hardware reviews imo.

[H] is not biased. Macs are just inferior products that are sold to gullible customers under the guise of Apple being a fashion statement / hip icon crap.

If you were a True PC [H]ardware guy you'd hate macs as well.

Its amazing the amount of sheer ignorance being shown here by both the Mac & MS fanboys.
Let us all agree that Mac will always command a premium over their PC counterparts.
Yes, they might have inferior specs as compared to their other equals and still cost more. But lets also not discount the fact that Mac are built better and have a nicer aesthetic value to it. I believe everyone of us will pay a premium, if we can, for something that looks better and is of better built quality.
Please don't take me as a Mac fan, but yes I am writing this right now on my imac. I am also building my PC rig as of this moment and the cost of my rig is more than the cost of a brand new Mac Pro. Why is that? Its because I pay to have quality items in my rig and a well built casing to go with it all. It works the same with a Mac, they put in the stuff that works for them into their rig and they design their casing to optimize its performance (sort of).
There will always be a market for premium items like a Mac or even a Sony Vaio or the Dell Adamo. Any idiot knows that they can get a better deal as compared to a Mac but remember its not just about the OS.

Cant wait for the date which you can install mac os x on a pc legally. Apple would be so damn broke lol :)

Not entirely. Battery life is a major issue with Vista. I suspected it for a few months and Anandtech finally confirmed it in several reviews.

http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3435&p=13

http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3540&p=10

Same thing with speed. I have Vista and OS X dual booting on a few machines and OS X smokes it on every single one of them. So longer battery life and faster performance on the same hardware, that's value.

No offense but you realize those tests are complete rubbish as it relates to your claims, and that you're betraying your lack of understanding of the basic fundamentals of benchmarking by quoting them, right?

MAC! No PC!

Ok now back to cars ;) I miss my silver (with mis-matched paint) S13. When I got "money" I sold it to my sister for an Impreza... d'oh. And someone rear-ended her. Very hard to find another one even remotely like it. They are all super high mileage or modded beyond recognition. And if someone actually has one in that condition, they want like $20k!

For a laptop! *looks side to side with shady eyes*

Heh.. nice ad. I'm more pc biased now, only because that Lauren chick was sexy.

Honestly, I believe mac's have a place in the computing world. Just not for everyone.

Me personally, I need my pc.

This is about as silly as watching a Ford hillbilly and a Chevy hillbilly fight over the better car manufacturer.

NUMEROUS hardware and software options >>>>>>>>>>>> Apple
