EVE Online, Amazingly Deep

EVE is not an RTS. It's an MMO. That should outline the differences pretty well for you.

Like WOW, except it doesn't suck. And your Night Elf Raider is actually Caldari and your Epic Mount is a Raven.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Just kidding. Go to Youtube, search for "EVE Online" and watch some videos, like the Alliance Tournament, mining, PVP, whatever. That should kind of show you what it's like.

EVE is odd, high sec EVE and lowsec 0.0 EVE are like two different games. 0.0 is fantastic! Lots of PvP, the NPC rats are pretty tough and its all good fun as long as you don't take it to heart. I find a lot of people take it WAY too serious.

Can you explain the differences a bit? Is it like a controlled sector (corp owned areas) versus no-mans-land areas (mining areas?)? I'm not sure I understand how the sectors are broken up in this game.

I watched BoB get owned in the Alliance Tournament 4, last night. Very cool to watch and listen to, the commentors were shitting themselves during the whole thing. Unfortunately, there was so much going on at once and I had no idea what they were talking about, or what I was looking at.

The ritualite video is a great example of PVP in 0.0 because it shows a guy actually moving his ship around, attacking, etc. It's sped up a bit, but you get the idea on the interface.

I started downloading this yesterday, but stopped. (292MB video!) Guess I should have let it dl'd. ha. (dl'ing now)

Oh and for the record.... I never played WOW. So I cant really connect the correlation.
I'm really interested in this, I just want to know what Im doing and what to expect, so I dont waste my trial period, if I eventually decide to jump in.

Every solar system is assigned a security rating between 0.0 and 1.0.
0.5 - 1.0 = NPC controlled space. It is very safe as any hostility means a quick death for the initiating party. Suicidal attacks are still possible if you are carrying valuables.
0.1 - 0.4 = Partly NPC controlled space. There are sentry guns at stations and gates (fewer with the lower security rating). You can get ganked while out in asteroid fields or anywhere really. The sentry guns are pretty powerful, so only large ships can hold up for a while against them. Relatively safe to travel through (though gate camps are possible).
0.0 = Player controlled space. You can shoot anyone at any time with no NPCs to save you. Being in non-friendly territory usual means a quick death. This is where large scale battles take place and you see fleets of capital ships.

your right some do take it seriously and the reason why is when you figure in the isk lost when you die it can amount to quite a bit. especially if your flying a dread or carrier. dont even think about taking a faction ship into battle they just pretty to look at. some ships are still gimped cough amarr cough amarr. i played it for two years and finally the few little things eve devs wouldnt fix got to me. i know the old saying though dont fly want you cant afford to lose!

Actually in fleet work several Amarr ships stand at the forefront. The zealot for anti-support, pulse apocs are also awesome and excellent snipers with beams. Amarr have had some loving the last couple patches and are steadily getting popular again.

re: Amarr
Damnation + FC5 + Mindlink.
Revelation = top damage in most cases when properly skilled
Amarr is good, but very skill intensive compared to other races.

LOL someone brought this back to life...
Well I am still playign EVE in fact I just came back from a hiatus of this game after I had a falling out due to some serious losses. I joined the caldari faction for faction warfare and have been having a good time.. sadly out of the 5500+ members.. 5000 seem to be noobs. But it's fun to be doing some PVP again. New exspansion is coming on March 10th, it looks like it's going to bring some very nice stuff with it. I am looking forward to having some new content and a lot of issues fixed by this patch so it should be awesome!

This game in one sense reminds me a lot like Diablo 2 hardcore mode... Where if you get killed or get over zealous and make dangerous decisions you can lose an aweful lot. I like this alot in that there is always a sense of "real" danger and you feel like you are actual earning items/skills/etc. for a purpose. They actually have meaning when you can lose them. I just started this week and am overwhelmed but I love reading and researching games and i've been doing it alot here at work while playing when I can at home.

Ok, I've been playing WAR since launch, and I think I might be ready for a different experience. I've heard mixed things/feelings about EVE, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. The question is, am I too late? Is it too late to get into EVE? The community seems pretty solid overall, but unfortunately, I know no one who plays. Easy to get involved ?

Thx in advance,

The question is, am I too late?

Not too late... but I will say that there are more corps that think they are elite than the opposite... which makes finding a good corp that isn't stuck mining veldspar in empire space a pain in the ass. I'm way behind too... and sick of dealing with these people.

We don't really care about the SP to join our corp, it's all about the mindset of the people joining and that you are at least 18 years old.

My name is Mashie Saldana in game if anyone is looking for a PvP corp.

definitely going to check you guys out - thanks for the headsup.

sorry for the double post...

Not even close to Minmatar regarding skill intensity. ;)

Ohhh a challenge! I like it!
Let's have a "skill-off"! ;)

In fact, let's just start by saying that Amarr needs all the Navigation skills that Minmatar needs, and Amarr needs Mechanical skills as well while Minmatar are not tanked and thus don't need those skills to be maxxed, or as high.

In EVE can you like, get away from everyone else in space and be by yourself or are there always people/NPCs around wherever you go? I like the relaxing idea of being in dead silent space and no one around for miles, but then deciding to interact when I want to.

Minmatar are the most skill intensive. Two words: split weapons systems.

So you fly Amarr and max out your Cap, Mech, Nav and Gun skills. Congrats, you can fly just about any Amarr ship. Minmatar have to max out Mech (armor tanking), Engineering (Shield tanking), Missiles, Guns, and Nav in order to fly just about any Minmatar ship well.

Damonposey - Lets just say the amount of space you play in is gigantic. I am still fairly new, only a week or 2 in but I have been playing alot and I pretty much always feel alone in space hah. Only when I warp in to a major port do I see other people floating around. And by "see" I mean I pick them up on my overview I rarely actually see someone fly their ship by me. NPC's are only around depending on what you're doing/where you are. IE flying missions or mining etc.

In EVE can you like, get away from everyone else in space and be by yourself or are there always people/NPCs around wherever you go?
You can get away from everyone else easily, just takes a few minutes at the most to go "off grid"* where you will not physically encounter anyone. However, you are still in the same chat with people in the area and your corporation, although you can minimize the chat window and just enjoy the deep space as is. ;)

*off-grid means that while EVE is devided into regions, which then in turn are split into systems, each system is further divided into grid cells. If you pick a fixed point in space, such as a jumpgate, and you start to fly away from it, at some distance the gate will disappear from your overview. That's when you are off-grid, meaning you are not on the same grid cell as the gate. The finer details and the importance of grid cells will become apparent later on as you play the game. Knowing about grid cells and knowing how to use them separates the better pilots from the rest.

Minmatar are the most skill intensive. Two words: split weapons systems.

True if you want to fly everything there is to fly, and in that case I do stand corrected.
I always felt that EVE rewards specialization, in case of Minmatar that means to me to avoid flying ships that require split skills, even if that is going against the original intent of the designers.

The best way to enjoy EVE in my book is to cross-train all the t1 ships battleship and below. That way you almost always have a ship nearby you can buy and fly, and it gives you a lot of familiarity to work with in PVP. It's easier then you'd think because all races share skills to an extent.

Armor tanking:
Gallente
Amarr
Minmatar

Shield Tanking:
Caldari
Minmatar

Hybrid guns:
Gallente
Caldari

Missiles:
Caldari
Minmatar
Amarr (some)
Gallente (some)

They all share gunnery support skills, some share missile support skills, all can use drones, etc. Once you have your default race trained up to an extent you can see which race you are closest to and start cross-training for it, which in turn will put you even closer to another race.

I'm ready to take the plunge into this game, should I sign up for the trial first, then bother someone for a code, or do that first?

I can send you one. Just PM me your email. You sign up for the trial with the code.

Some people mentioned that you can earn enough credits by playing a few hours to pay for your game time. Is this still allowed? How many months would have to play before getting to a level where you could easily pull in enough ISK for that?

I played the original beta years ago and have tried the trial a couple times since then, but I never really got into the game. I might give it another chance if I didn't have to shell out for a monthly fee (after some initial leveling).

Loving the game so far....hating the "shut down" time for it though. Everynight (or day depending on where your at) when I get home from work and log in, Ive got and hour, maybe 2 before I get this message telling me the servers are going to down in 1 hour. Then every 15min after that reminding me. Gahhhhh!!!!!

I can understand the need's and why's, but damn inconvient to ME :(

I finished up the tutorial for your first time there. Started to do other missions on my own. Heh, that was a trial......

I tried to do one Agents missions, but part of the mission told me I didnt have enough cargo space to carry the amount of ore the Agent was requesting. So, I got myself a crash course into the market system for the first time, looking to find something to increase my cargo hold. Then I find out I dont have the "skill" requried to install it and I then get to go track down the Hull skill book. Jumped about 4 systems to save 10k isk. start the training for it. Will take 29min to finish......and then another message pops up...."5min to server shutdown".....Gahhhhh.

Damn fun game :)

Thuleman had mentioned something along that in my EVE thread....

There's another benefit EVE has. It's legit to convert RL cash to in-game currency at a market rate.
The way this works is that a player buys a Game Time Card (GTC) for real world cash. CCP provides a sanctioned secure method to sell that GTC to another player in-game for in-game currency.

The seller can set the price of his GTC to be whatever, and while the price for a 30-day GTC fluctuates, it's usually somewhere between 280 and 320 million ISK. I have been playing EVE for a long time, and for me it's easy to make 300 million ISK in game without much effort at all, basically with only minutes of time invested. The result is that I haven't paid RL cash for my game time ever since CCP legitimized selling GTC for ISK.

I would estimate that someone who is dedicated and not inept could learn enough about the game to go from the starter 5,000 ISK to 300 million ISK profit per month in about 3-4 months without any outside help. However, during the learning phase, and considering the low cash on hand, one would need to spend some time making profit. This was true when I started out as well.

You want an industrial class ship - basically a big can with engines. Should be easy to train for, and the ship itself will only cost a few hundred thousand.

I had a miner on here, had just bought one of the ORE ships, probably the first one you can buy. And then my laptop died, couldn't runt the game. So I haven't bothered to get back into it, but i would like to for sure.

I don't know why but mining is oddly entertaining for me. Put on some music, mine, and enjoy the pretty colors.... after i've taken a huge hit of ether...

Sounds like you would fit in perfectly with an Australian corp, they are always on during Downtime. Do you play after the downtime is over as well, or only up to downtime?

There will actually be some improvement on that with tomorrows release of the new expansion. You will be able to queue up to 24 hours of skilltraining (only skills that you know already), so that especially new players can queue up a bunch of short skills and go to work/sleep/school/whatever, and not worry about losing out on training time.

Thuleman and SAW, thanks for the info about trading ISK for game time. It might be worth trying 60 days with the retail box and see if I can get into it this time.

Ironic you say that.....a long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away....errr. I mean.....a long time ago, I had a night shift job and got into playing Mechwarrior 4. Joined a clan with some guys who were on at that time and 90% of them were Aussies. My name here "SAW" is derived from that game, heh.

I used to play EVE online. I decided that I like lasers and wasn't an amarrian, turned out I wasted a month worth of training and quit. I hear its a fun game as long as you don't use lasers.

Its nice now in EVE you start out with almost 1m sp's so you can use Tech 2 smalls within the first hour of playing the game. It made it alot easier for new players to get in the action quicker.

It's too bad you quit, since lasers are the new FOTM. They rock.
