Your thoughts on a WD 1T drive

My rig has two seagate 500's in it now but I am out of space and wanted to go to the new 1T or 1.5T from seagate but after reading all the problems I don't want to chance it.

so newegg has the WD 1T black

I have not used WD in about 6 years, the last two I had died.

The drive will be a storage drive only with the OS on one of the 500's I already have.

The WDs are very nice. If you want it just for storage, I'd personally look at the WD GreenPower drives. They are cheaper than the Caviar Black drives, use less power, are quieter, and are still plenty fast for storage drive purposes (75 - 100 MB/s writes if you get one of the 3 platter drives).

Look around and you can get a WD10EADS (32 MB cache, 3 platters) or WD10EACS (16 MB cache, newer revisions have 3 platters instead of the older 4-platter 250 GB design) for the $100 range.

Alternatively, the Samsung Spinpoint F1 7200 RPM drives are good drives in the same money range ($90 - 100). Good performance, still quiet, can hang with the top 1 TB drives in benchmarks.
 
I use a 1T WD GreenPower drive also in my WHS, runs super quiet and low power and heat. THe are great for a storage drive. May want to go with the Black if you want to use as your OS drive though.
 
Ditto to the previous two posts. WD10EADS for storage - absolutely the coolest, quietest 3.5" drive I've ever owned. A 3 platter WD10EACS is not bad either.

Folks like to knock the green drives since they are "green", it doesn't satisfy their ePeen. A WD10EADS (whatever rpm it is) benchmarks better than my 7200rpm 7200.3 320gb laptop drives, and better than my 3.5" Seagate 7200.10 250gb single platter drives, so it ain't all that slow... and I can safely say no-one can tell while watching a HD video stream if it is coming from a 4200rpm drive or a 10k drive.

Best Buy has the WD 1TB Green drive on sale for $111.99. $3 more (plus tax) than newegg, but you get it now. If you had free shipping from newegg, you'd be waiting more than a week.

Needless to say, I picked one up from BB today.
 
I have a WD 1TB Black as the OS drive in my WHS. It's a little loud when seeking for my tastes. I left it alone though since it's in my server in another room. I wouldn't want one in a desktop right next to me though.

I agree with the previos posts - WD10EADS.

Just unpacked the drive and I see that I have a EACS. It's still a 3 platter, correct? The 16mb cache size isn't a big deal when just storing files, right?

When does HDD cache size come into play?

HDD cache truly is important when sequential read/write speeds are high for a larger buffer, however, mechanical disks are limited to only so much so 16MB cache is usually par for the course in terms of speed, but 32MB doesn't really add too much into the fray. However, with HDD prices being as cheap as they are now, if 32MB cache doesn't cost extra or a very little more on top of a 16MB cache, you may want to consider, but honestly, it isn't a big contributing factor for me when selecting which drives to purchase.

# of platters depends on when the drive was made. For all you know, BB still had one of the older EACS drives which have 4 250 GB platters.

The following are known 3 platter versions of the EACS.

Hm. Well, mine is definitely not any of those. I can't recall off hand (I just put it in my server and I'm not taking it apart). Any idea on HD Tune results to tell which I've got?

I could always go exchange or return it. The BB by me just got 6 new ones in last night, so they may be newer (hopefully). I bought from a store closer to school this morning.
 
I'm pretty sure i have the one that you linked to - the 1 TB black edition.

I have to say WD has good customer support. Just thought i'd throw that in there.

Anyway, i don't normally benchmark drives and compare them, but i can record a HDTV show with MCE and watch it which it's recording. I tried doing that with my RAID 0 (dual WD RE3) and it didn't turn out well.

Diskeeper says that my most accessed files are read at 103 MB/sec while the least accessed is 69.7 MB/sec.

I know for a fact that the WD10EACS-00ZJB0 is a four platter. I am running 8 of them in R5, manufactured Jan 2008.
 
Yeah, but how would you factor in the 2yrs extra warranty you get with the black drive over the green?

Black - 5yr warranty
Green - 3yr warranty

I just picked up 2 Black drives at BB for $119.99 for my HTPC. I'm storing my Blu-Ray .ISO's for HDD playback. I was torn between the deal on these, or the $111.99 for the Greens, but figured the 2yr added warranty time was worth the extra $8 a piece. I knew the Greens are very quiet (Wife is running a 500GB in her comp), but figure the slight performance gain and longer warranty would be better in the end.
 
Got the drive from the Egg yesterday but will be another day or so before I put it in.

Dew - you are correct. I have 4 of the 00ZJB0 that were also manufactured in early 2008.

+whatever number it is now to the green drives! I have three of them running in my computer, yeah the rest of my computer might be hogging all the power so why care about a couple watts here or there? It's more about heat to me and not wanting to dump loads of heat in to an already warm case. Either way they are great storage drives, cannot wait for the 2TB ones to be out even though that means they really are 1860gb. :(
 
I use 3 of these WD 1TB Black drives for my music/video libraries. I'm a mobile DJ and have these drives in external enclosures. They are fast, reliable, and offer outstanding performance.

I've got the 1tb Black and I use it for my music and movie files...very fast, and although some say they're "loud"...I disagree. I know for sure I can hear my VRaptor, but the 1tb drive, no way...
