I'm trying to do some reseaching on doing a disaster recovery plan for my agency but I don't know where to start. Any good sites out there? Any sample plans? Thanks.

I have to create documentations for scenarios.

If Exchange NIC dies > Call Dell for replacement > Replace NIC
If shared data is corrupted > restore data from tape

Are you planning on doing a complete disaster recovery plan? cause they are very very in depth and go as fas as If ____City is destoyed by natural disaster our business continutiy plan is to ___________

There is really a lot to a disaster recovery operation, honestly its not a one person job.

I use to read disaster recovery journal, but havn't in awhile, maybe start there

If you are discussing about hardware recoveries, these things depend on the your current software and hardware assets. If you are talking about a disaster recovery such as a nuclear bomb dropped and all other natural disasters in the USA. And, you still need to maintain a business with asian countries, you are on another level. Writing this document and executing this plan is going to be very difficult. You need to hire a team of consultants who specialize in this area. Try Sunguard. It is going to be very expensive. They have a huge office in Philadelphia. They have few nice off site bomb shelters.

I think it starts from the basic hardware/software error to fire and water damage I guess. I wasn't specially told where it ends. Thanks for the site. I'll check it out.

Also, your company's lawyer is going to get involved with the consulting firm. I would avoid this project unless you need to this for your resume.

If you take this project and your company is mid to large, you are going to work many nights and weekends doing various tests. You will also be responsible for 24/7 recovery procedures. Also, you will be doing tests every weekends for every six months until you quit. If you also get partnered with a lawyer who doesn't have a clue, you will go grey. The benefit is only few people will get the chance to do this. There are many options to do an off site recovery.

I second this, its just a huge legal and business decision process. Once the company has a DR plan/continuity plan, then the departments can discuss what they need to do so they can recover according to the requirments needed.

Often time when i do a buisiness continuity plan or data DR plan, it finds the customer severly lacking in several areas, and a large investment needs to be made to meet what they want.

Just one note, do a test restore from tape at least every 30 days, if you think your doing backups, but cant restore from them, your screwed.
