DTV Delay Could Cause Confusion, FCC Chairman Says

For oen time I agree with you W1retap. D* is awesome, esp. the vod 1080p movies coming out...

The OTA HD defeats D*'s OTA channels, but then D*'s OTA channels are mpeg 2......

Eating out even a few nights per week is far more expensive than cooking your own meals, even with the price of food and electricity + natural gas. If people are going to be lazy, that's their problem.

I agree, I was being sarcastic over today's world.

People today are lazy and want to take the easy way on everything.

Honestly, your right. Even if fast food was cheaper, nothing is cheaper then good health and not having diabetes.

DirectTV HD ftw. I've pretty much given up on cable companies. I tried 4 different ones in my area. The only thing I still 'need' them for is cable internet until something better comes along into the area.

I've seen cable HD at some local places. Looks worse then my D* SD :(

D* HD blows it away

Going back to the topic though...

Only thing I can stand are movies are science shows, and D* has plenty of it.

This ain't about being cool or not, it's about a new generation of kids growing up as couch potatoes playing video games or watching shitty reality shows.

I'd say letting tv expire to some people would be good, then kids could go outside, and, I dunno, excercise?

yup, that's it was when I had Comcast, and Wide Open West cable HD services. Just last year I switched to DirectTV HD. I was sick of having audio and video blips every time a squirrel would run down the cable line, or trees would blow against them. That and I have bad equipment at my node that they won't replace because they said there are only 4 subscribers on it and it would cost them over $25k to replace.

OOOOOkay....

It's now obvious your a troll or an idiot.

1. Directv HD today is excellent, esp with only 5 channels per transponder and encoded at mpeg 4. You obviously have no clue what your whining about.
2. ONCE AGAIN, I said people inviting gfs over to download a movie at today's download speeds are bums. Don't believe me? Get a gf. Unless you have a decent download speed and can play it without a hitch, it won't go good.
3. Again, I did say OTA HD was better.
4. Quit whining about shit you don't understand EMO kid.
1. See below.
2. Sure thing, dude. You're a champ!
3. Blah.
4. Excuse me while I go slit my wrists. Down the road, of course, not across the tracks.

Your taking what I said completely out of context, or your just putting s BS spin on it, take your pick. As I never said any of this.

I don't have time to explain to you what I've already explained. So if you can't understand english, go away.
Uh huh.

rofl, DirecTV HD is about as close as I've seen to OTA HD as it gets. I've experienced nothing but very high quality HD on their HD channels. Even in our recent snow/ice/rain storms here in Michigan, I've never got any dropout or pixelation. The new 5LNB dish is awesome. My dish was coated in about 1cm of ice a few weeks back, and I still had 95% signal. Just over the weekend we had 12 inches of snowfall over a several hour period and it never had one hiccup. People that make these outlandish claims of "lego" quality picture make me giggle. Learn how to setup a satellite dish properly. Infant level skills won't get the job done.
Nope, you're right. I apologize. Haven't been keeping up with satellite stuff.

People with large tvs and don't wanna look like a cheapskate/bum when having friends or a gf over to watch movies.

And cable tv sucks, satellite and fios is where it's at.

Interesting statement and highly subjective.

Am I a bum for not having cable, satellite or fios?

Aside from Battlestar Glactica there is not a single thing on those choices I see worth paying a hefty monthly charge for. I'd much rather pick and chose what I see on my HD rig either by purchasing movies for my collection, renting from Redbox or obtaining the obscure movie off the 'net. (1949, "The Fountainhead" last week)

My girlfriend (who gets a headache at the thought of all the stuff I have connected to my HDTV) has no problem living without cable, aside from which buttons to press to turn everything on.

For those interested- HD-DVD player, Upscaling DVD player, 4 game consoles, A Shuttle SFF PC via HDMI, JVC Super VHS player and a Blue Ray player as soon as the price drops =)

Well why don't we look at the actual facts for a second here okay...

A 10 mBIT connection transmits at 1 megabyte per second. Afull movie would be a gigabyte or more, 5 gigs if it's a good quality movie.

So you invite your gf over on your awesome 3 mBIT dsl connection to have her wait an hour to watch a movie?

Before you guys make more useless comments, I said inviting someone over and bad connections. That's the two most important parts of what I said.

On Thursday, Obama’s transition team asked the FCC to delay the analog TV shut-off planned for Feb. 17, citing the shortage of digital tuner coupons that subsidize the cost of the boxes that prevents analog TV obsolescence. The FCC chairman replied with a warning that any postponement of the date could confuse consumers. I reserve comment but feel free to chime in below.

Wow, do people actually still watch their TVs instead of their computers? :p

And yes, if you want you can invite a person over to wait an hour to watch a movie, just like you could go on a date to McDonalds. Both methods make you look like a cheapskate.

While I understand what you are trying to say, you are overlooking streaming. I can stream movies from netflix with a 3mbps connection and they play back just fine. That said, I don't feel that is the perfect way to watch a movie all the time. Quality can drop down due to slow down in speeds, also you have to have an extra device to watch it.

Who waits for an hour to watch a movie when a date is coming over?

The statement makes no sense at all, at least to me.

You guys actually have dates and play couch potato watching a movie at home?

Now that is cheapass as hell.

Try a real movie theater, dinner perhaps, dancing, etc.

I hope it gets delayed. I need a converter for my Mom in the nursing home. Yes, I waited a little too long but there was no indication that these coupons were in limited supply. The moment I heard that a shortage might happen I signed up but was met with a waiting list message. If I have to get one at the inflated full price then I will but I won't be happy about it. This whole thing is a giant scam on the consumer anyways.

the tv providers are making it a scam. the upgrade to hdtv as far as OTA networks goes, they did it right. they didnt charge anyone for the upgrade in quality, and they are allowing people to get the converter box for next to nothing.

on the other hand, go and get cable or satellite service and youl find HD packages at a premium price, more expensive hardware, and TOTAL confusion when it comes to your program guide. HDTV is supposed to REPLACE standard def tv, yet in reality we have both now at different price levels (AND STANDARD DEF DIDNT GET ANY CHEAPER)

Alright, let's not get all nasty about this. I mean the President(TO BE ON THE 20th) is all about Change right? Of course is that him trying to save some change in a piggy bank in his room? Oh what about the Change he'll have in his new ride? He'll be able to save enough Change to give to all the Toll Booths he has to pass through in that. Watching the Changing of the guards(Oh wait that's England). Well my one big thing is that I don't think I'll get correct Change from him.
All you think about that now.

I mostly agree with you, but there are times where eating out is cheaper, if time is a factor. With that said, I generally don't eat out....but I can't say I make much from scratch either ;)

Stouffers FTW :D

But even if time is really pressing, one way around it is to make things from scratch in fairly large quantities and then package them in individual portions (if nobody eats at the same time) or whatever is needed.

It doesn't take much more time to make 15 servings of spaghetti sauce than it does to make 2+. Refrigerate or freeze and you're good to go....next time you're 20 minutes from pasta heaven

Besides, much as I like a whopper off the grill, I can make a much better burger at home for much less...and with a lot less fat.

I haven't had cable in ages, but my parents switched from satellite to cable 2 years ago, when Dish refused to give them the HD receiver for free (It's wrong to charge 100 bucks up front and then charge a monthly leasing fee).

Cable has a terrible picture, but I convinced my dad to stick it out, because they're getting Municipal FTTH in the next month, which will give them cheaper video and better video, significantly cheaper and faster broadband and cheaper phone service than cable or AT&T.

It's enough to make me want to move back to Louisiana.

i actually use these antennas that pick up local broadcasts. i just cannot justify paying for a monthly service that i dont make enough use of. so a one time purchase for an antenna that supports dtv makes sense in my case. im absolutely stunned with how great the football games look on my LG 52" LCD.

i picked this up and am really satisfied:

And sorry to say to all the ones who say it's better to take someone to a theater and don't have a home theater: Considering the chances are high that you'll get to hear loud kids screaming the whole movie, or stuff on the seats, or any sort of annoying thing happen, it's far better to buy a bluray or watch a movie off of Directv then go to the theater.

BTW, a $30 bluray is also around $10 more expensive then theater tickets (Unless you buy food!), and watching movies at home is alot more intimate.

But what do I know, I am a shit incarnate who lives with his mom because I have a home theater and refuse to go to the whiney child infested theaters...

Maybe if I went I'd hear Vaulter98c screaming for mommy.

That would be me actually- I have both an analog and digital antenna on a directional mast. HD broadcast over the air uncompressed is sweet compared to the compressed crap sold on cable here for about $75-$85 a month in my area.

Pick up about 20-25 channels here which is about 18-23 more than I need.

The only thing I miss is sci-fi channel (Battlestar Galactica) but we have cable at work ;-)

I hear you, I myself am actually using a ATCS OTA HD antenna and love it and I am sure many others are as well. I am just referring to the analog broadcasts.

yea, a movie is real intimate. Its like actually going out and doing things, without the whole going out or doing things parts.

don't get pissed at me kid just cause I think a little more than sitting on a couch watching a movie is required to be called "intimate"

I don't know what the hell your problem but QUIT FLAMING ME. I've reported this one too.

aww, some one cryed cause I shed some light on how stupidly off topic you were? my bad, just trying to do the forum a favor kid.

Honestly, your fighting about the most intimate way to rent a movie for a date... you expect not to get fucked with? ecpecially since its so far off topic...

Only if you're stupid enough to buy retail. Do you buy hard drives at Best Buy when they're not on sale?

BD's are on amazon for a buck or 2 more than the deluxe DVD releases. If that's not for you, then rent, because they're not likely to make a bunch of stripped down disks until the masses move in.

First off, it's YOUR OPINION that that was off topic. Second, if you have to flame people because you can't get any then your not doing any forums any favors troll.

You don't bother me. I won't be feeding you when you lash out, I'll be reporting you.

I'm not very surprised, the FCC has been delaying DTV since 2001.

I think the orginal delay was because way back when they first came up with the idea of dropping analog they thought that by the time that date came that everyone would have dropped their old tvs with analog signal and moved to either digital tv or HDtv and there would be very few if any people effected. Like most attempts of people guessing what 10 - 30 years in the future would be like they grossly over estimated. People don't get rid of everything they own just because something newer comes out. Even if flying cars came about in the next 15 years, you won't see every single person driving them in 16 years. If homes 20 years from now are being built to have displays in the walls; voice activated controls for lights, heating and cooling; and built to be highly engery efficent you won't see every single house 25 years from now being gutted and completely rebuilt to support all of this stuff. But they never take that into consideration.

Same happened back then, they had this great idea of how by the time their cut off date came near that nobody would still be using analog so they could take it without it being a problem. as the date got closer and closer they realized it wasn't going to be as little of problem as they thought. So they moved the date back and set up government programs to help people get the equipment they need to keep their tvs working.

Overall I don't think the delay would cause a lot of issues. For anyone that is already converted they wouldn't know that it didnt' happen, and for the rest I doubt anyone is going to be sitting there thinking this is my last day to watch tv then be surprised when it isn't and get confused. All they would need to do is broadcast a new commerical stating how the transtition is going to be delay a few months. However tv stations that are ready to pull their old equipment might not like it too much that the date they have been planning for is now different. At the same time as others have said, you are never going to have 100% of the people ready so at some point you have to just say fuck it and take the jump. Since this is the date they have been broadcasting for some time they need to just stick with it. Anyone that doesn't get their convertor box in time is just shit out of luck. Sure the program didnt go as expected with some people having their coupons exprire before they could find a place that had any boxes for sale, but people still knew this was going to happen.

Just for the record....

All the "yammering" over this DTV shit has been so annoying, because the cocksuckers in the media are too chickenshit to fulfill thier obligations under the Public Service Announcement regulations to bother with anything "controversial"... remember "Your brain on drugs..." for example.

The Bushies let them get away with this nonstop shower of OMFGDTVSWITCHWEREALLGONNADIE!!!

The whole lot of them should be taken out and shot, for terminal pussy-itis.

There is a new sheriff in town next week, hopefully this crap will end soon.

Point of Parlimentary Proceedure: The only people left who DONT KNOW about the change are the fucking Crack Whores and Junkies who frankly wouldn't know the difference between Hanna Montana and Static.... they are fucking JUNKIES.:rolleyes::p

I think he was trying, in his own way, to say the cycle was allowed to happen and it wasn't put to a stop before it really got started. So that now, pressure is being put on the new administration to delay the date, and for whatever reason the new administration agrees with the past rhetoric. Which is the problem with the government.

But you are right, if Obama doesn't think it is a good idea...then it shouldn't be allowed to continue "just because," yet here we are discussing the situation.

I view this desire to push back the date, and even help consumers who can't help themselves, as simply another form of bail out and am wholly against it.

Where was my voucher when the cell phone company switched from analog to digital? I'm sure there are other examples that could illustrate the point as well. It should be the consumers responsibility to burden the cost of having to upgrade their systems to keep up with technology. It is NOT a right to have cable TV. It is a privilege!

And as far as I am concerned, I do not care if it was "forced" or "not fair" to the consumer. If "it wasn't fair to the consumer" was a good enough reason for the government to have to shell out money, then I want money for every MMO I have played that has shut down their servers over the years.

It is a service, and the cable companies provide it. It is our responsibility to have the equipment necessary to use it, period.

So that now, pressure is being put on the new administration to delay the date, and for whatever reason the new administration agrees with the past rhetoric.

I think someone is pandering, pure and simple, and that person is Obama.

I was against coupons for converter boxes too, why should my tax dollars be spent on this shit?

TV isn't a right, its a luxury.
