Just so everyone knows. This is a home server.

HP EX470 MediaSmart Home Server (AMD Live, Windows Home Server, 500 GB Hard Drive)

been waiting for this to come back in stock...and to see if the old model supports Time Machine backups. I know they been saying the new one does. (update for older models?)

Could you install and run programs on this like firefox and openoffice, or not? I need a basic server, but would also like to be able to install and run programs on it if I needed to.

From sources I've read, many of the addins for the new models will be released as updates for the original models.

No, this is designed as a headless server. if i recall correctly there isnt even a VGA port for a video hook up. Its all configured and managed through the included Connector software.

However it does had RDP so you can access the desktop that way and there are a large number of plug ins and add ons to add additional function.

Functionally it is a Windows 2003 SBS install that has had its services trimmed down (no AD, DHCP, ect) with the connector software overlayed and a new way it approaches disk mangement.

While your answer is correct for 99% of the people out there (myself included), there is technically a VGA pinout on the motherboard you can hack a connector onto should you want to actually hook up a monitor to said boxen.
