SO I just DL the game from steam. Launch it and get no video but I do get sound. No error msg, the monitor has a msg saying that the signal is out of range. I have a 21" Sony CRT. I can't imagine how it is out of range. Can I edit the settings somehow or what?

I almost forgot. Which stalker are you having the issue with. CS or SOC i Have both and do not have any blackout issues with my monitor. If it is a issue with the resolution then you might want to find the user.ltx file and edit the resolution from there
What is your system and what resolution are you trying?
I'm running fine on vista 64 @ 1600x1200 and a 22" compaq CRT monitor. I think this game is a DX9 only game, so should run on XP just fine.

game - rt click props - set launch options - +r_width 1920 +r_height 1200 or whatever your native res is.
It is a CRT, it doesn't have a native resolution. Reccommended resolution would probably be 1600 x 1200. Max res would be somewhere around 2048 x 1536.
I had this same issue in Server 2008 x64 but I just needed a reboot and the problem went away.

This also happend to my son, your monitor isnt out of range. Browse to your steam install folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\stalker shadow of chernobyl\_appdata_
Copy "user.ltx" and "banned.ltx" from "\_appdata_ " to:
C:\documents and settings\All Users\documents\STALKER-SHOC
and it should work.

I've played steam's STALKER SoC on a Sony 21" CRT with no issues, FWIW. Both Vista Ult x64 and XP SP3 IIRC.
