Prices reflect those of the store. I am looking for a camere just to have for fun cause my last one drowned in a pool :) I saw these 2 cameras at best buy and want to give one for my self for christmas.

Sony - Cyber-shot 9.1-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black - 329.99

Nikon - Coolpix 10.1-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black - 299.99

Trying to stay under 350 really but can go to 400.

Thank you in advance.

i used to work at bestbuy in the camera department and all i did was mess with em when it was slow and i always enjoyed the P80 the most. the stabilizer works incredibly well and the menus are easy to fly through. the sony seemed to have a sluggish interface and wasn't always the most intuitive. as far as picture quality, you might have to hunt down someone that reviewed it and threw up some sample shots. even if the P80 had slightly less image quality (which I'd be surprised), i'd totally take it over the sony.

yeah i played with them for a bit, but what i also licked about the sony was the way the lens completely hid. Thanks for the input

Sir, for $400 you can buy a DSLR. I recently snatched a d40 w/ kit lents + 10 other accessories for $326 :eek::eek: on ebay

Indeed. I think DSLR-like models are fast becoming obsolete. Either buy a real DSLR or a nice point-and-shoot.

Im open to suggestions :) i do have a d80 but i figure this other one would be small enough to take everywhere :)

since you're willing to spend $400, then may i suggest going with a Canon G10 ($420 at B&H). but if you really want to stay under, then PowerShot SX110 IS ($199 at B&H) is your friend.

I wouldn't buy anything from bestbuy, it's surely going to be overpriced. Take a look at the lumix FZ28. thats what I just got today but I haven't opened the box yet. I spent about a month researching them. check out http://www.dpreview.com

18x zoom
10 MP
RAW format
720p video with zoom

"Small enough to take everywhere" means "will fit in my pocket" for most people, and the two models you're looking at aren't going to do that. The only things a faux DSLR will give you over a good compact is a longer focal length range and possibly more acceptable results at high ISO levels, but that depends entirely on the model. You're already sacrificing your D80's greatest advantage -- swapping out lenses -- for portability, so you might as well go all the way and get a good compact that will fit in your pocket.

As far as specific suggestions, northrop and Gabe3 both gave good ones, but I'm personally going for the Lumix LX3, which dpreview ranked higher than both the Canon G10 and the SX110 (the Lumix FZ28 is in a different price bracket). I've been researching it for a while and plan to pick one up to complement my 400D, and it appeals to me over the G10 due to its smaller size and wider lens. The LX3 has only 2.5x zoom, but it starts at 24mm, which is very wide for a compact, and great for anyone like me who likes to shoot landscapes. The maximum aperture is 2.0-2.8, lending it to low-light shooting. However, if you prefer too shoot more telephoto, I would probably look at the G10.

In any case, anyone shopping for a point-and-shoot this time of year should check out dpreview's holiday group tests. Here's the enthusiast compact cameras test, which fits your budget.
