be back in a few hours after I read all the manuals

Welcome to the club. And you will be reading that manual for a while yet.

Better send it to me. I'll uhhhhhh.... "calibrate" it for you and make sure there are no defects... :D

Nice new toy. Have fun!

I love my D300. I'm sure you will too. I went from a D40 to a D60 to the D300 within a year ;) I didn't bother with the battery pack because I seem to get about 3-4000 pictures out of the battery, which is enough for me.

I'm a bit jealous of that 60mm.

The manual is hundreds of pages. Easily the longest manual I've seen.

Why the 16-85? It's a slow lens.

I shoot mainly people at 5.6 for control of DOF. I frequently shoot groups at parties, even paid events like at nightclubs sometimes. I wouldn't be able to utilize 2.8. I also shoot under the influence. VR/IS is need to control camera shake while people keep buying me shots...

Have you used similar settings before on your previous camera?

I find f/5.6 unnecessary as it's DOF especially at wide angle is large enough for a group of friends. It would work on the dance floor. I prefer f/2.8 for more subject isolation. VR/IS isn't necessary if you use flash as main light as it will stop all motion. At 5.6, the flash would have to work harder. If you're using a light modifier or bouncing, it could matter.

2.8 will also give you a brighter viewfinder and better AF.

You might also consider a flash bracket and off shoe cord. :D

Well just some things to think about.

yes i have tried those settings before with good results with my canon xt and my sigma 18-50ex 2.8. I knew I wasn't going to stay with canon long so I never bothered to spend money on the off shoe cord. I plan to use CLS once I get back at it.

Skip the manual and get one of Thom Hogan's ebooks

+1 on this one.

also, if this is your first Nikon, the you might also take a look at www.nikonians.org - it's the [H] for Nikon

and congrats on the gear. let me know how you like that 60mm. i'm looking into getting one for Christmas

F Nikonians and their for pay boards.
you have to pay for GenMay here, but i don't see you complaining about that. and same thing applies to Nikonians. you don't have to pay to use the forum. you only pay for extra perks.

here are a few shots from the 60mm, no PP just straight RAW- JPEG with LR2 as the converter

^thanks for the samples, strikeout. it looks like this lens is a lot of fun to shoot with.

The 60mm is nice for closeups but not much use for macro, IMO. Not enough working space at 1:1
