I'm considering a Drobo since it would be cheaper than building a new rig with a decent raid 5 controller. Aside from price, Drobo does have a few features that I have not seen anywhere else.

The downside. It looks like it doesn't do much past 20MB/s.

So...

Thumbs Up?
Thumbs Down?
Wait for 3rd Generation?

2nd Gen Drobo is between 499 and 999, if i where you, I would say "screw that", and build a WHS server.

99.99 for WHS
29.99 for Foxconn 945P7AA-8KS2
39.99 for Celeron 430 Conroe
11.99 for Crucial 1gb DDR2 667
24.99 for Case+PSU POWMax CP2039-BK
149 for 1.5tb Seagates up to 6tb @ 496

355.95 to
702.95

so you save between 46 and 197 dollars by building it yourself with WHS, and you get a ton more functionality, and expandability. (add a RAID card and you can double or triple the capacity fairly easily.) Plus with the setup I just spec'ed for you, you would have to still buy a hard drive for the 499 model so that would actually be 650, so you would save 200 on the base model, and if you used 1 tb drives instead of 1.5, you would save another 120 dollars at the 4tb end. so you would save between 160ish and 320 ish.

(my math may be off a little bit.. im exsausted at the moment from being up for almost 48 hours trying to finish a project for school)
