Sorry, If this is stating the obvious, however I searched the forum and couldn't find any threads that confirm it has been released.

Thats what I said...

They are smoking some crazy stuff over there in the marketing and pricing department.

lol, what a joke... why... 2 x 4850 can be had for $300 or so... did they add anythikng to this like shared memory?

Its got 2gb of memory, but It is probably only 1gb effective, sort of like the 4870x2. I think the memory simply mirrors each other, correct? Either way, its still a waste of money.

There were some talks about Sideport on the HD 4870 X2, I don't know whether HD 4850 X2 has the hardware for it or not.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3372&p=3

The reference 4870 X2 design includes hardware support for the CrossFire Sideport, assuming AMD would ever want to enable it via a software update. However, there's no hardware requirement that the GPU-to-GPU connection is included on partner designs. My concern is that in an effort to reduce costs we'll see some X2s ship without the Sideport traces laid out on the PCB, and then if AMD happens to enable the feature in its drivers later on some X2 users will be left in the dark.

Well here was my thinking (which seems to be wrong now)...

Two 4870 1GB cards costs $580 and the 4870X2 2GB is $530. So the X2 is $50 cheaper.

Two 4850 1GB cards costs $400 and so I was expecting the 4850X2 2GB to also be a few dollars cheaper.

Hopefully that price comes down as more 4850X2 cards show up. :)

It's hard to buy this card at that price when you know the HD 4870 X2s were going for less through Best Buy. $299 is the right price for this card.

Another problem I see with this price. TigerDirect has the Diamond 4870x2 for $489 AR. I picked one up when they had that free shipping promo a couple of days ago. You spend $429 you might as well get a 4870x2 for $60 bucks more. I would think $350 for the 4850x2 would be a little more fair.

Alright, never mind, when I bought my 4870x2 a couple of days ago it was 539.99 with a $50 rebate which equal $489.99 It seems the price before AR went up to 549.99...so it's actually $499.99 AR at Tigerdirect. That's still not a bad deal considering two 4870 1GB cards will cost you $600.

Ewiz.com has the 4870X2 for $495 (no rebates needed). And about a month ago I got mine from them for $480. And I know a lot of people got theirs cheaper at that BestBuy sale as Ogilvy mentioned. So it's kinda hard to understand that $430.

I guess ATI figures the 4850X2 still beats the GTX280 sometimes, so no point going cheaper than it. *shrug*

And you thought ATi(AMD) had concern for the common gamers wallet, puh-lease, Its all about the final step in every well laid plan, profit.

I think their smoking crack because its using a different heatsink that's exhausting around 300+ watts of heat into the case. I think they should of used the same one as the 4870x2, maybe use aluminum for the fins, probably aren't going to be able to overclock this much as two cards.

With that strange heatsink and blue PCB, I'm kinda guessing this isn't ATI's design. Looks like Sapphire might be at fault for that... just guessing. :)

well 4850x2 is faster than gtx280 and this one seems like oc edition cause gpu is at 650 mhz plus this isn't amd/atis referrence product only saphire released it

They are testing out the market to see what the demand is at that price. Price will drop to ~$350 in some time. Patience, everyone!

Geeze, settle down people! It only just came out and its only 1 site so far. Wait for a few more people to start selling it and a few more days for prices to settle down. The 4870x2 prices were all over the place when it first came out too.

Wait and see how this develops, they're not going to pursue that price if no one buys. Profit is what they're ultimately here for (even on this forum).

Agreed. Give it a week or two and it will settle in at $349 or wherever its going to end up

Is it an official ATI product or just some partners glueing the cores? I remember that asus did something like glueing three 3870 on one pcb

Message to ATI:

I will not buy this product because the price is absurd. I will now buy a GTX 260 because they are reasonably priced.

Simple economics. You wait a bit while they "test the market" at this price and prices are sure to fall.

I particularly love this part in the item description:

System Requirements 650 Watt or greater power supply with one 2x3-pin PCIeR power connector and one 2x4-pin PCIeR power connector is required (1K Watt with two 2x3-pin and two 2x4-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX technology in dual mode)

A 650 for one of these? Are you f'in serious? And a 1kW for Corssfire X? Good lord. The price is as ridiculous as the power usage.

They're only reasonable IMO if you're willing to jump through all of the IR/MIR/Cashback/Coupon code stuff to get them under or near $200. What has become of us, that we all expect our high end cards to cost $250-500 at or near launch. We've all come to expect it, and no one knows why (at least, I don't know anyone that does). I'm no better, I expect it as well.

Its not that I expect it. Its more so: Hey, ATI, just so you know, this product is out of my budget. Take it for what you will.

Well that deal doesn't do me good since I would of been taxed. Tigerdirect I don't get taxed plus it was free shipping the day I bought it.

Any new product, when launched, is priced at its peak to see what the demand is like at that price and to test out the market. Some people will buy it, others will not. Price will adjust accordingly with time.

They are over shooting.

They have to take the crappiest PSU and make it work on their cards. I bet an earth watts 430 would run it (if the rest of the system wasn't crazy)

Yeah they over shoot. We all know that you can crossfire two 4870s with a good 500-550 watt CPU but I gurantee ATI suggests atleast a 700w.

But yeah if we wait a little bit the prices will go down. I'm sure they had a hard time deciding how to price the card since they have a decently stacked line up right now.

All the people saying "OMG ATI is ripping us off I will buy a GTX 260 SCREW ATI!" need to remember that the same thing happened with the GTX 260s and GTX 280s. Don't forget that the 260s were like $450 when they launched.

I'm waiting for this to drop in price some so I can use it to replace one of my 4850's so I can have my Crossfire setup 4850 x2 + 1.

From everything I have been reading, (whether it be in articles or forum threads) getting a 4870x2 and using it in Crossfire mode with a 4850 would be actually be a loss because it would neuter the 4870x2's performance, or something along those lines.

Yeah, I saw the card on newegg for about 410. I'd personally rather go with the 280 because of sli/crossfire issues.

I wonder if anyone else besides Saphire plans on releasing one. Its already been a week. Im just glad the price is coming down...
