DoubleSight DS-265W Official discussion!

Mine had a red tint to it as well, when looking at black areas from the side. If that's a symptom of an A-TW polarizer, I guess mine had it. I certainly didn't see any sort of white glow from/around anything, regardless of viewing angle.

I received my 265W a couple days ago. Because of an enormous amount of work I have to do, I'll be brief. I'm pretty sure it has the a-tw polarizer. Without a doubt there is a faint red glow when looking at an all black screen (within a dark room). It's actually to the extent that when I'm sitting close to the monitor and right in front of it, I can see the glow on the left and right edges of the screen. I'm going to examine it some more tonight, but just wanted to let you all know.

We need pics of that earth wallpaper from an angle asap. If it indeed has an A-TW polarizer then all is forvigen for DoubleSight.

I figured out that the thickness of the bezel is 1.67" on all sides. The total length of the monitor is 25", the horizontal viewable size is 21.66". Still too thick.

where did you buy? what exactly does the polarizer do and how much does it improve picture quality?

I don't think the red tint is an indication of anything, or at least its not a very strong one. My monitor has a red tint when I look at it from an angle, and I know it sure as hell doesn't have an A-TW polarizer.

If you missed it, here is part 1: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=6279574

It appears the "twinkles" this user was seeing was caused by a bad extra long DVI cable he was using. Once he switched to the factory DVI cable, the twinklies went away. Though not scientific, he didn't notice any lag in gaming or compared to a Samsung TN panel he had sitting next to it. He said it needed very little calibration, though he didn't post how he calibrated it. Someone has asked that question so hopefully he will post this information. He also likes the stand and it's movements, and said the menu system was very intuitive.

He obviously has lag and response time confused, so I'd wait for a real lag test.

Ok, took some pictures tonight. I took images from 2 angles with multiple exposures at each angle (and either a pure black background or the blue marble background). You can download them here. You can view the exif data for the pictures to get a sense of their relative exposures.

From the first angle, 7685-7686 are the best approximations to real life.
From the second angle, 7692 is the closest. This is a good showing of how much of a red hue shows up at about a 40 degree vertical and horizontal angle.
From the third angle, 7695.

To me, this is pretty darn conclusive evidence of the type of red-glow we've been talking about. Note that in normal use when the room is completely black and the screen isn't completely black, it's hard to notice the glow unless you're looking for it from an angle, and even then, it's not enough to bother unless you love staring at pure black screens from intense angles for extended periods of time in a pitch black room. :D

That's exactly what my 263N looks like. Doublesight redeemed?

Take a look at that first picture of the screen (or lack thereof, I know) . Regardless of it being wide gamut, that's pretty faithful to how that would look with a sRGB monitor. Does anyone else agree on that point? He also says colors look very accurate. Interesting.

If I can find a good retailer with a good return policy, I'll probably order this LCD and do a side by side with the Planar that I'm getting.

I know pretty much no one has the monitor yet, but does anyone know how the component input looks, and whether it can accept 1080P over component?

I have tested 720p from the PS3 over component and it looked very nice. The PS3 won't output 1080p over component, so I can't test that. I also tested 480p over component from a Gamecube, and while it looks ok, you will be the mayor of Pixeltown. I was pleasantly surprised that the monitor does display 480i, allowing you to see what you're doing when you change Gamecube/Wii games to progressive mode.

The only problem I have with it is that you need to turn the brightness up quite a bit from the VGA/DVI inputs, and the monitor doesn't remember different settings for different inputs, so you have to change it every time you switch.

Thanks for the response Orange Crush. The reason I ask is because of the lack of HDMI, I would run my Xbox 360 over component, PC over VGA, and PS3 over DVI(using HDMI->VGA cable). It would be awesome if it accepted 1080P over component for the 360.

Also, I know everyone here hates Newegg's policies on LCD's but I just wanted to point out this deal:

$729.99 + Shipping
After promo code "LCD91030"

Newegg offers DoubleSight DS-265W Black 26" 5ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 500 cd/m2 DC 3000:1(1000:1) Built in Speakers. Promo expires 9/25.

The polarizer would be a big deal, but I still think I might go Planar on this one. The extra $60 or so just seems worth it.

What about scaling? Does "auto" maintain the aspect ratio, or does it only switch between 16:10 and 4:3?

They may be doing this because other places are listing this monitor at $730 with free shipping. Maybe this means other sites are about to get shipments and Newegg is trying to rack up sales before they have to lower the price to be competitive.

Possibly. I was just pointing it out. $730 with free shipping is definitely the better deal, if you can find that. Waiting would probably be the smart option.

I'm waiting until I hear about the input lag and whether the component input accepts 1080p. Both could be potential dealbreakers.

I really want to see a comparison with a NEC to test for a polarizer. Also a test with the backlight.....No backlight control would be a bad thing....

These updated newegg pics make the monitor look a tad less ugly and fat. At least compared to what Doublesight has on it's own website. I think the somewhat thick bezel is more of an inconvenience if you're using a dual monitor setup than anything.

Yeah, those pictures make the monitor look a lot better. I'm still really disappointed with the lack of a true HDMI port. I think most people would agree that forgoing the component input for HDMI would have been preferable.

Yes, the lack of HDMI is disappointing but you can always get a hdmi switcher for $15 at monoprice. Get some adapter dongles and you're set. Anyway this model seems to have a A-TW polarizer, at least the first batch does. No one is reporting input lag issues... yet.

The polarizer makes this monitor very tempting. The color gamut is wide but not as much as that evil HP 24" lcd.

That is the advantage of using a digital signal, you can use dongles and switches without degrading the PQ. It's still really weird how this monitor has "USB" and "HDMI" printed on the back with no actual inputs.

And evil HP 24"? Evil because it is a wide gamut? lol. That was actually they other monitor that is competing the DS-265W for my money. I would really like the extra 1.5" that this gives though.

But yeah, low input lag and an A-TW polarizer will seal the deal for me for this monitor.

I don't like Doublesight's record so far because of sloppiness like the missing ports...but if this monitor comes with the A-TW polarizer and the same low lag as the 263 and the Planar, then IMO its the LCD to buy. There's no point in even shopping around unless you need the pro features of the 2490/2690.

I really hope the DS-265W doesn't end up a victim of another panel lottery, so to speak. It's either this one or the Hazro HZ24Wi for me. H-IPS with a glossy screen, next best thing to a polarizer for me. Adds vibrancy and helps a bit with the contrast, like on my 20WMGX2.

My hopes for a true succesor for the 20WMGX2 were crushed when NEC announced that the 24WMGX3 is going to be AMVA and matte screen. Going for only 700 brittish pounds, that's only a few dollars away fromt he 2490Wuxi.

Like people were saying earlier, DoubleSight is compltetely illogical in its business practices. Sure, their panels are popular, but so many more enthusiasts would snap them up if they were guaranteed a polarizer. And if the DS-265W does have one in all of them, why wouldn't they advertise it?

So agravating that we have to wait a whole month to buy from a reseller that isin't Newegg. Provantage has a $30 mir going with the DS-265 right now. Brings it down to $682 + shipping.

...So why not get it from Provantage? Or are they just listing it ahead of when they can actually sell the product?

I could find no link to the rebate anywhere and they offer no returns on the LCD. Provantage has good prices, but the last MIR on something I bought from them had a 12 day postage limit from the time you purchase it! By the time I received what I bought, I had only 2 days to send the rebate off. Just be aware of that...

$30 Mail-in Rebate Available
through Wednesday, December 31, 2008

No link to the details, though.
