Any good free apps for trying to recover files deleted from a thumb drive?

Came across this, but it's trial software.

Hi. I had to try to recover deleted data on a friend's flash drive a while ago and the best result I got was to use photorec to recover the .chk files which it then attempts to rename using the file header. A guide is here:

I might want to check into that program myself. I have a flash drive that died on me that had some files I still wanted off of it.

For a dead drive, you might want to try BadCopy. It has a freeware version, but I don't know what its limitations are. It's supposed to be good for corrupted sectors and such.

It's not free but check out GetDataBackFAT. I bought some digital cameras on eBay and it was able to recover the pictures they deleted.
