I was going to buy a GTX280 next month, but wondering maybe better wait for 55nm version?
What is better - but now and change next year or wait for GT200b?

If you can wait do so, the GTX280 even though very powerful has a high failure rate and does get very hot.

It comes out next Tuesday, can you wait a week?

I love my 280(s) but I'd wait. I think there's a chance the 55nm part might come in at $399. Either way prices will only go down and/or performance go up within the next week.

I'll wait for the 55nm version, should be here soon. I wonder how its going to compete with the 4870x2 though.

I love it how both companies keep releasing new cards quite often, always good for us consumers.

NVISION 08 Monday, August 25 - Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
It was thought it might be announced then.

Show me a site that says they have a high failure rate. I have yet to see such.

Actually if you read evga forums and various other forums, there are quite a good number of people having failures with this card due to high temp.
I doubt evga or nvidia will release the official rma numbers but if people's testiments are any indication of performance, the 280 seems to have a higher failure rate than many other previously released video cards.
Personally, I bought 1 from newegg while awaitng my step up. The one from newegg had massive temp problem. At stock when I ran the card for 5mins in Lotro, it would spike to 100+ and would have to throttle down to retarded spec. With my step up, I hit the high 70s at same loads.

1) GTX280's failure rate is the same as any other video cardsa And all (newer) video cards run HOT. Thanks for flaming though.

2) If you want a single card- Go 4870X2. If you want Tri SLI go GTX280. (if you want SLI I would still go 4870x2) but TRI SLI GTX280 beats 2 4870x2's because games dont even pick up the extra two cores- all the reviews with CrossfireX show decreases instead of increases. Though 4870x2 beats some GTX280 SLI , GTX280 will beat it in many games also (its half half id say) but it would cost about 150 more to go GTX SLI so not worth it.
Whereas TRI SLI GTX280 is the same cost as 2 4870x2's

so in conclusion:

1 Card = 4870x2 (610), GTX280 (420) winner= I think 4870x2's performance is worth the more money)
2 cards= 4870x2 (610), 2 GTX 280s (840) (I think 4870x2 is the winner because the increase in Price isnt worth the frames)
3 or 4 cards= 2 4870x2's (1220), 3 GTX 280s (1260) winner= GTX280 (if your this much of an enthusist, the 3 gtx280's is a no question.)

3) There is no reason to wait for the 55NM because ATM its not even known for sure, Everything are really crummy rumors.

I went a head and got a BFG O/C 280, sold my 4850s so fast (faster then expected, gone in 2hrs) so i cant wait a couple of weeks for the 55nm. Lifetime war, and stepup. If it breaks ill RMA it if something comes out thats better ill stepit up. WIN WIN

How much did you get for the 4850s?

Hmmmm...

And mine have VF900s attached, so that adds $60 to their (combined) value...

Hmmmm... :)

yea i wanted to unload mine fast cause i need room in my case for a tv tuner ASAP. So i priced to unload.

With rumors of the 55nm version coming out next week (tuesday) I'd wait for next week for sure. I'm sure you'll see reviews pop up that day. Then again, Kyle and company may already have one, however if they did they would be under NDA.

Why not go for a USB tuner? You really need multiple tuners anyway, I have two analog tuners for analog cable and two OTA HD tuners hooked up to my sig rig and they work great.

I have two of each of the following connected to the sig rig:

Just thought I'd mention it. Sorry to thread crap.

It looks like the 55nm GT200b isn't coming out next week after all according to Fudzilla. My guess is now that it won't be until November that we see the new part.

That is BAD news for my Oct. 15 step-up dead line!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!

First he said it was coming out next week, now he changes his mind, the guy is shooting in the dark.

Thanks guys for replies.
I think I can wait a bit for that 55nm card. I'd like to buy 55nm version, even if I need to wait till Q4.
I will try to save some more money and then next year buy X58 mobo and second 55nm GTX card and sli it.
I only hope that X58 will work out well for SLI....

By the time you'd get your x58 I have a feeling better cards will be out...

There perhaps won't even be a G200b, in Q4 there would be another card coming which might take back the performance crown to nvidia.

I also want to wait until the 55nm refresh. I'm becoming more concerned with heat and especially power consumption. I was thinking because all of the great games for pc are coming out late september/october maybe a mid september gtx260 purchase would hold me over until I can do a trade in for the refresh?

That's also my lat thoughts - buy a GTX260 now, or still wait. I just sold my GTS512 today, so I will be running on onboard card now:(
Maybe better wait - Nvision didnt show up anything, there are roumors about double chip GTX card now, everyone talking about 55nm in Oct/Nov - so in worst scenarion - it will be 2 months without games. All new great games coming out Sept/Oct, so it doesn't look like a huge pain waiting for new card:)

if you wait forever, never buy new goodies, you remain with old stuff.
buy its a good choice

There is a trade off. If you know something better is coming very soon and you don't care about being top video card dog, it's wise on your wallet to wait. Except crysis, my computer can handle any game, so waiting a couple months for a card that chews up less power would be beneficial. Even if it doesn't perform like I want it to, the gtx260 price will drop even further by the time september/october roll around :D

Not to threadcap either, but why do you need more than one analog and HD tuner on your PC? From what I think you just typed, you have FOUR tuners (2 analog, 2 HD)...why?

A refresh of this sort would probably lead to better prices for someone like me. :) I'd be okay if it launched soon.

I will buy a new video card in the coming 3 weeks.
The GTX 280 55nm would have been my first choice but it seems I will rather get the 4870X2.

dont stay to much, buy ,if you want to have a good thing ,and latest tehnology.

I don't think 55nm is coming soon, or so I hear... the latest rumor is that nVidia is gonna simply update gtx260 with an extra set of SPs/TUs in September and that's it for a few more months :(

ok, so now when it looks like GTX280 shrink version will come out as GT212 in Q1 2009, there is no reason why not to buy GTX280..
Am I right?
