I'm in the process of upgrading my 8800 Ultra to a GTX 260. I currently have a spare Zalman VF1000 and RHS-88 heatsink that fits the 8800 series. Will this by any chance fit on the GTX 260? If not, are there any aftermarket cooling solutions out there for the GTX series cards? From experience, the stock coolers are usually garbage.

Actually you dont need, the stock coolers are really good once you crank up the fan speed with rivatuner to like 60% or more it will keep the card cool even under load.

With my antec, and the fan at stock speed, during the day my card surfs the net and does the regular stuff at like 43c, during the night it likes to hover around 39-41c. Load temps never get past 65c

I guess I'll give the stocker a chance. The stock HS on my 8800 Ultra idled at around 63C and would jump up to high 80's in games. Zalman dropped it a lot.

My Evga GTX260 idles the same as my E8400 at around 50C. At load it never goes above 70C at 40% auto fan speed. This is overclocked at 700 core, 2500 mem, and 1485 shader.

You will enjoy the 260, it overclocks like a beast.

I don't get why you would change out an 8800 Ultra for a 260. That's hardly an upgrade at all. You already have a kick ass and expensive Ultra. To me a MINIMUM upgrade in that circumstance would be a 280, not a 260.

I agree with Mike. You have a great card. I would keep it, unless you want physx.

If you can learn anything from the posts in this forum - leave the stock cooler alone. It's fine! Look elsewhere to bring the temps down - new case, more fans, ect.

I disagree about the 260 upgrade. Granted I only had a regular 8800GTX, but it was heavily OC'd and my heavily OC'd 260 simply blows it out of the water! Get an eVGA and step up to the 290 in September!

The stock cooler on the 260 is actually decent, I have to agree with everyone else. When I'm gaming I set the fan speed to 65% and the card never gets above 64c (clocks are 702c/1512s/1188m).

As for upgrading from an ultra, I have no clue. I upgraded from a heavily oc'd 8800gts640 (700c/1600s/1100m) and noticed a HUGE difference even with the gtx260 at stock speeds. I left the GTS installed and am using it for the physx though.

stock coolers work fine but get noisy for anything over 65% or so...

As far as the 260 blowing the 8800 GTX out of the water. Don't even know what you're referring to. The reviews sure don't show that. A bit faster yes, blowing it out of the water, hardly. Enough to upgrade? For me, no way. The 280, yes. You must have a lot of money to burn to justify an upgrade from a 8800GTX Ultra to a 260.

The upgrade will be free guys, my 8800 Ultra kicked the bucket and the manufacturer is offering me a 260, as they don't make the 8800 Ultra anymore.

pretty awesome.

im pretty sure the aftermarket HSF wont fit.. however, you can do very well (and get decent OCs) on the stock HSF. dont bother w/ aftermarket, if anything.. just sell the HSF and enjoy your awesome card.

Ok, now it makes sense. Just couldn't picture doing it when money was involved.

The stock heatsink is the best I've ever seen come from a manufacturer so I'd say stick with it. it's allowed me to put a good O/C on the card with the fan setting @ 84% which is basically inaudible in my office. Needless to say I see no reason to replace it.

maybe put some new thermal paste on it?, does it use those thick pads that the 8800 gts had?
