I have always used cheaper off the shelf routers, Linksys and Belkins mostly.

I knew going from 802.11g to Draft-N would give me better signal in my townhouse, on either floor, but its blown me away.

I picked up the DIR-655 from Best Buy. I had a coupon plus price matched with Circuit City so it under 90 bucks out the door. That's about twice what I paid for my Wal-Mart Belkin 2 years ago.

I got home and set it up. I found it easy to set up the router and wireless but some of the other options I felt were over my head at this time.

I first tested the wired connections. I don't have any benchmarks but the gigabit connection really felt like it made a difference in browsing, streaming and gaming. That alone makes it feel worth.

Next I tested the wireless. Both my notebooks are still G. The Belkin router just sucked at signal strength, wireless streaming and connection drops.

My notebook I had in the same room was getting full signal, which was expected. Everything was nice and speedy, except it took longer than before to connect to the network by about 15 seconds.

the notebook that was downstairs, which before would rarely get 2 bars in that area, got full strength. it was snappy on everything that it wouldn't do well before. it still had the same issue with taking a little longer to connect.

all and all I'm very happy I bought it and don't know why I waited so long.

I'm very close to this myself. I've read around and taken in a lot of consensus and dual band just doesn't seem worth it.

Just out of curiosity then, is whatever Internet connection hookup you have faster than the 100Mbit your old router provided?

Hehe, I don't think it's necessarily the speed that's making it feel smoother. Maybe just the router processing the data more efficiently. Or maybe it's just a mind game.

no the DIR-655 is just a better router...it wont increase your internet speeds because the bottleneck is our connection not the hardware. But i saw significant improvements on transferring data around on my lan. The DIR-655 is the best consumer router I have ever used.

meh, buffalo hp-g54 + tomato = still my favorite router

ive never had a dlink, netgear, or linksys last longer then a year.

I have been using the dir 655 since it released and it's easily the best router I have ever used. My house is three stories and the wiring closest is in the basement. Yet with that router I can sit by the pool outside or patio and still have good signal to surf the internet.

I am in the Market for a nice N Router since i got my new laptop with an a/b/g/n card it in and i may go with this router since it has some great reviews, but i was looking more at a dual band since they can do both G and N without bumping down to G speed but i am not sure anymore and the dual band are just coming onto the market?

Going from Wireless G to N makes a huge difference. I just did the change myself and see a big improvement in response time.

meh i bet browsing the web is the same speed, you guys are just wanting to feel good about spending money.

i still sell all wireless g, and thats fine for web browsing, if they are doing data transfer they get hard wired.

I've had a WRT54G, but I decided to make some significant changes to my network this week and bought a DIR-655, I never liked D-Link in the past because I always thought their UI looked horrible, but they did everything right on this router, it runs great.

You wont really notice faster speeds when browsing the net, but I can stream Blu-ray ISO's from my server to my television without a hitch with this router

Well I had forgotten about this until I got a PM from somebody asking about the router pointing to this forum.

It's still running strong for me with just a few slight hiccups. One was after a heavy night of storming and multiple power flashes (5-10 that I can remember while I was awake) I had to reset some of the wireless settings. The other is every couple of days if my wife leaves her notebook on and just lets it go to sleep, she will need to restart to reestablish connection with the router. Nothing too major in the past two months.

Browsing and gaming still feels faster on a wired connection. Like I think it was mentioned before, it probably comes from having more efficiency than anything. The Belkin 54G I had before was just terrible to begin with and only got worse as time went on.

I'm still happy and think it was worth my $90 investment. That only makes it worth it since I don't have to spend time resetting the router multiple times a day.

I bought the dir655 over a year ago and it had been an amazing router until about 3 weeks ago... now the wireless won't work. The router keeps connecting and disconnecting the signal ever 2-3 seconds. I can't figure out the problem.

Try manual changing the wireless channel to 1, 3, or 6. Channel 11 is on by default probably interfering with other wireless devices. I have a new DIR655 too, and changed to Channel 1 and have not experienced any disconnection issues.

Bought the router 10 months ago and it hasn't skipped a beat. There were several times where the connection would go out, but that was the cable modem at fault. The only three things I would improve on the router would be:

- getting rid of 'rebooting' the router everytime I manually forward a port or change some other setting
- DD-WRT capable, though the D-Link firmware isn't that bad.
- DLink, pleeaase bring back bridge support

i hate mine, it constantly drops wireless connections on B and G, even using THEIR recommend wireless cards and USB devices, dropped almost $400 to use thatin our office, so 3 clients could use wireless and 3/4 of the time they are connect via cable cause the wireless just randomly drops for everyone.

Again, look at my previous post. Most of the connections problems are solved by changing the wireless channel.

I had a 2.4GHZ phone that was interfering with my connection (well, it seemed like it was. Did a quick test of unplugging the phone and connection speed/timeouts were gone). I just changed the channel on mine to 1.

i did, set it to channel 8, 9 and 10, and there are only 2 other wireless networks viewable in this area.

that is the first thing i do when i set up wirless is change the channel.

Try channel 1. Also, couple of other things to look at. Updated firmware? Updated drivers?

I bought this router a few weeks ago and I am not a fan... I am connected directly from a ethernet and I constantly get huge lag spikes ever since changing to this router. As many as 5+ times every 20 minutes my ping/ms will shoot up to 1000+. Don't know if its the router or what.... but I never had lag spikes before the upgrade....

I had this wireless dropping not too long ago on my Trendnet, exactly like your Dlink.

Anywho, go to Statistics in the Status menu, under Wireless Statistics, do you have any errors or packet drops?

Why channel 3?
Channels 1, 6 & 11 are the only none shared channels?

I thought the 655 wasnt gigabit, only the 855. I am interested in buing a super-router and would go so far as to seek biult-in bit torrent ( I use a mac mini to do that now)

The 655 has 4 Gig ports.

right, the 825 is dual band. Im thinking about one of these two or the asus wl-700.

Bought mine about a year ago, I love it.

No disco's, spikes or anything with mine.

Great router. Just make sure to keep up to date on the firmware updates unless you're not having any trouble.
