Capcom Blames Piracy for Poor Game Sales

You do realize that new PC's are vastly more powerful than consoles now, right?? In fact, yours is as well.

You do realize that
a:) I don't own a new PC. and more importantly...
b:) Console games are still demanding as hell on PC's. (LP: PC, RE4: PC, DMC4: PC, Bioshock(not as much), etc etc) I just take the guesswork right out of the picture. I'll save all the tweaking and hardware upgrades for the Rage/UT4/Warhead releases.

But my main point is if it's isn't an FPS, who the fuck cares about the PC release when it's later than the consoles. PS3/360 is getting really close to that "good enough" territory and the fact that its a crapshot if pc games support widescreen correctly.

bah i bought dmc4 this saturday so i deserve a cookie.

but seriously, what's their point: they just release it for an additional platform for extra money. there's no extra developer costs. maybe some beta tester checking if the pc build crashes somewhere. I understand crytek's point, but capcom? pfft.

console game developers rip off their customers with games that cost as much as 70 bucks while pc games cost 50 max, at least where i live. and console graphics suck compared to what my box can deliver and it's not brand new at all. dmc4 looks phantastic on the pc. i played the ps3 demo and it looked far less shiney.

What was Crytek's point exactly? That they didn't make enough money when they didn't have to spend a single penny of their own money to develop the game OR the engine? Between EA, Microsoft, Intel, and Nvidia handing them money left and right they were probably making a profit BEFORE the game even launched. As of this point they've sold 3 MILLION copies worth of pure profit. They have NO reason to bitch and moan about that. Lets not forget the idiotic 5:1 ratio they claimed. There is no way in hell that many people came close to pirating it. 3:1 or 4:1 at the most, but 15 million people? No.

Bought DMC4, cleared and enjoyed it. I was happy to get a game like that(we don't get many beat-em-ups on PC) for PC. It was also cheaper than the console version.

If Capcom is gonna bitch about PC Piracy I don't care, I'll still pick up the games they port because I like Capcom's games. I don't know what compelled them to start porting their xbox360 games to PC but I'm glad they are, hell I even bought a 360 controller so I could have a better experience with em.

So yeah, no matter what they'll atleast get 1 legit sale out of me for most of their PC releases.

One quick reply to that, I have tried time and time again and can't for the life of me get oblivion to preform well for me to enjoy it. It has been thrown to the pile of unplayable games for me (far to many)!
Oblivion is unplayable with your current hardware?
Wow... My computer is a bag of poo compared to your system and I enjoyed the Hell out of Oblivion, after mods of course...
AMD XP 2500+ and nVidia 6800 GT.....

Once I finally upgrade this machine I'll probably head right back to Cyrodiil and waste a few hundred hours.... again...

I dont understand all of the complaints about mouse support. This is an arcade game which pretty much automatically registered in my brain that I would need a game pad.. Same exact thing for assasin's creed. So I bought and xbox 360 controller and have since beat assasin's creed and playing the demo of dmc4 and it was great. Pretty sure all capcom games have been this way since RE3 , why this is news is beyond me.

There is a long thread about this in the gaming sections and what it basically boils down to is wether or not bad sales are the direct result of piracy is irrelevant. With that logic it seems like people say well its ok to pirate a game that is selling well.. Silly. The truth is devs have a point wether or not pirating is the leading cause or not is irrelevant, it is still there and they are still losing money. Until people are held responsible for their own actions and understand internet doesnt = free then pirating will continue until only the big pc devs remain, blizzard, valve.

It's happening more and more.. I mean cmon who would of thought epic would turn console developer. Not to mention ID software a pioner of pc gaming who are now making all future games multiplatform. Now we have Crytek who said if this next version of crysis doesnt sale they will have no choice but to go to consoles. If you are a pirate and want something or someone to blame in 5-10 years when pc games are developed even less than they are now, look in the mirror.

It's the year 2008 and your telling me a PC port of a console game has no mouse support?

Why even bother porting it over then............... Should have just put a giant DMC4 dildo in the box instead.... Since your basically fucking yourself over by purchasing the PC port in the first place.

I know that was the problem, on single core systems so I hear the game rocks but on dual and quad core it starts to have a slew of issues! I so want to be able to play the game but it runs like a bag of poo!

I am sorry that you think that, but the point is not we think that pirating is ok but that they try to use this excuses time and time again to justify lack luster sales. Look at the new SimCity was that game pirated or did nobody want it? Further more consoles are pirated also just like every damn thing else so why do we get singled out?

It's reccomended to play with a gamepad.. Heck assasin's creed has "Xbox gamepad" on their reccomended specs. I guess they could be more clear that the game really requires the pad on the dmc4 box. Im suprised on how few people have one. I use the gamepad for racing games too.. how do you play a racing game with a mouse ? I am also thinking capcom didnt think it would be a shit a brick issue for it to require a controller to get the mose enjoyment out of the game. After playing it with a gamepad I dont see how a mouse would really help it that much. The gamepad would still be better for the experience.

Consoles are much harder to pirate games on for starters. Especially if your runing an xbox 360 if they detect your runing a ilegal copy your console will automatically lock you out. Ok, anyways.. If you read his quote and any of the devs quotes they never say the end and be all reason is piracy. But they have a right to be concerned with the number of pirates downloading their game. Logic dictates that if you have a computer that can run DMC4 then you sure as hell can afford the 40 dollars for the game. So wether or not it accounts for all of their loss sales it irrelevant and until piracy isnt a factor they or we would never know.

I think the current generation of PC games should allow mouse support, whether or not it works perfectly or better than a gamepad for that game is entirely another discussion...

I think PC gamers in this current day and age like to have options and choices. When they don't get them they feel that they have been restricted and usually blame consoles and their existence for this fact.... Like the graphical / advanced options in Unreal Tournament 3 are extremely basic compared to the last iteration of the game, I have heard so much whining about it when playing the game and the players blame the companies focus on making the game for consoles.....

The game has no where near the population or servers as did the last iteration either....

I find it silly but this is how people think in this age or should I say the majority.

Well most games DO have mouse support because usually the keyboard and mouse is the best controls to have for the pc. The exception to that rule is platform/arcade games and racing games. The great thing about a pc is were not limited to using just a controller, or just a keyboard. No we can use everything from a Steering wheel, to a Force feedback joystick for flight sims. Each game type has a control system that works best for it.

The controls were horrible in the port. They only had real support for 360 controllers. That is why I didn't buy the game. Capcom isn't known for good PC ports. Let's hope the new Street Fighter doesn't suffer the same fate.

If Capcom wants to do PC gaming, and not half-assed ports, go the way of Steam. I guarantee they'll make more sales and fewer pirates. Make multiplayer a major function of your game, it will gain support.

I disagree with you on that note, I have run into several people who have pirated games for their 360's and also have their own xbox live type service. I don't disagree that it may be harder but the fact of the matter is that it can be pirated. Also pirated software will always be around, that is not the point, the point is devs keep hinting at piracy being the culprit for poor game sales and not anything they have done. If Adobe went about saying well our software is the most pirated in the world so we will have to look at putting photoshop on consoles, you would look at them like damn fools. Software in its nature can be copied and needs to be accounted for or in that matter not accounted as lost sales!

They've gotten better starting with Lost Planet. LP had its problems, but it still wasn't too bad. I really don't know what else they could do to make the controls better, beyond customization. Keyboards simply aren't good for these kinds of games. SFIV is going to blow on a keyboard. Though, to be honest, I'm so sick of SF that I'm not even going to both with the game on any platform.

i think their PC ports are horrible.. let Resident Evil 4 be an example, when i played it on the Gamecube i couldnt believe how amazing it was...its one of my favourite games ever... then i bought it when it came out on the PC to play it through again and not only were the controls terrible.. but even the cut scene videos looked like crap, needless to say i put it on the shelf and didnt go back to it. it would have been so much better with a mouse and keyboard.

Ubisoft did that port, not Capcom. Capcom is doing PC games internally now. Not to mention, DMC4 wasn't even a port. The console versions were ports of the PC version.

man DMC4 was an AWESOME PC port... plug in an xbox360 controller and it absolutely BURNS the console version... one of the better games i've played lately...

oh yeah thats right.. the console was the port..it was orignally designed for pc... but was going to be an exclusive ps3..

It had a rather weird development cycle. The PC version was the lead though.

If I like a game I will simply buy it. If I don't like a game I will not buy it nor will I d/l it. This is not a difficult equation. Make a good game and people are going to buy the game.

I blame lack of awareness. This is first time I heard Devil May Cry 4 is on PC.

If the PC version shipped at the same time as the 360 and PS3 versions it would have sold better. Most people interested in it already picked it up on one of the consoles. When it came to the PC I'm sure the logic of some was I already bought this for the console, so I'll just download it for the PC and mess around with it.

If car makers started making cars cheaper and worth buying, then maybe I'd stop stealing them!

Arrrr!

Anytime something is cheaper and hence has a higher value fewer people will steal it. It's logic, give it a try. I didn't even know DMC4 was coming out on the PC, I've got the demo started now and if it's any good I'll buy the game. Maybe Capcom should try something called marketing... Hell, I've already pre-ordered Fallout 3. That's called marketing Capcom.

why don't they blame bad games sales on bad games ??? come one I hate seeing the same game over and over and over, so what the version changed it is still the same game, come out with NEW IDEAS and NEW GAMES and lower the dang price!!

Well, it just seems like the popular thing to do now...game sold poorly....don't bother finding out why, blame piracy.

Agreed, with crappy titles and the economy sucking, its the only option people have right now.

Only option?

How about NOT PLAYING THE GAME.

All the cheap ass pirates just screw the legit customers like me because we have to put up with the friggen DRM bullshit.

Is it just me or is it becoming a trend to blame piracy for poor games sales? First it was the folks at Crytek (emphasis on cry) blaming pirates for crap game sales, now we have Capcom blaming pirates for poor DMC4 PC sales.

Actually I think it's because it's a console port, and 90% of the time console ported games on the PC are shite, I would like to tell Capcom that I looked at the box on the shelf (what a waste of a tree, when will America catch up and put games in DVD cases, burn some oil instead, it's already dead), and I thought "nah, it would suck anyway, and I have seen the previous game on the PS2 and that was dull".

Crytec sold millions of copies they have no real right to complain, and they should follow Valves idea of CD key and user account association, to solve the piracy problem, and before anyone says "what about the people without an internet connection", get a dial-up connection for almost nothing, okay it takes longer but hey your activating the game aren't you?

How many copies of DMC4 sold on other platforms? I am going to get Bionic Commando and Street Fighter. I do try to support PC gaming, I just don't carefor DMC4.

As much as I enjoyed the first DMC when it came out but purchasing DMC2 totally turned me off to the franchise, so I'm not planning on spending more than $20 on this thing PC/PS3 or otherwise, due to lack of faith. Probably any other Capcom franchise I'd drop money on in an instant.

Crap games make games no fun.

Well, it just seems like the popular thing to do now...game sold poorly....don't bother finding out why, blame piracy.

It seems publishers are just looking for a scapegoat these days though. Game doesn't sell well it HAS to be due to piracy or something else other than that the game wasn't worth buying (Gears PC, UT3) or that the people in charge of the company did nothing to make people see that they can run their game on moderate hardware (Crysis). Anything to pass buck so they don't have to accept responsibility for their own mistakes. Same thing is happening with the music and movie industry.

Not only that the pc version is released way after the hype machine for the console version winds down they spend ZERO on marketing the pc version most don't know it exists

I did not know this game was available for PC until I accidentally walked by it in Target the last time I was there.
