Neverwinter Nights 2

mmmm, not really (other than the D&D aspect). I'll reserve comment as I quickly became disenchanted with the experience when it first came out (technical difficulties actuall, I think patches handle that though). I cam curious to see what other say as it didnt grab me at all and I was recently thinking about checking out some fan mods to give it a fresh go...so much so I picked up the mask of the betrayer expansion at target for 10bucks in anticipation of finally giving it some time

I would have to say No. It isn't too similar. NWN2 does feel a lot more restrictive than NWN1 felt IMHO. It ran like a Hog too.

I suppose theres still a fun experience to be had if you don't compare it to NWN1.

NWN2 is more like that older D&D game "Temple of elemental evil". The game is pretty nasty on systems for some reason or another and was pretty much unplayable when it came out because of the older hardware mixed with lots of bugs

That being said, the game is REALLY fun! All the quests are interesting with pretty good voice acting. The spell effects are pretty and combat still has the same "spacebar pause" functionality so you can micromanage your characters mid fight, much like in NWN1. Your party is typically 3-4 people unlike NWN which was just you and a henchman, right? I would call the game Baldurs Gate 3, except it is set in Neverwinter.

If you can stomach the camera and piss poor user interface.... even so you are left with an extremely linear game, with an ending similar to KOTOR2's (wich means, abrupt and without any explanations, aka unfinished).... and also one of the worst optimizations ever seen (can bring ANY system to it's knees despite how much you upgrade).... not to forget a completely broken multiplayer system (the very thing that made the first game so popular), because on NWN2 you have to MANUALLY download from wherever the required files to play on a specific server, and if the server updates anything you gotta download it all over again.... and besides all that a toolset so hardcore that practically no one can use but the most experienced modders, and even most of them said on the NWN2 boards they were done with NWN2 and would ditch the game completely and return to making mods for the first game.... then yes, it sure is a worthy game :rolleyes::rolleyes:

As others have said, outside of the D&D rules and the setting they are not all that similar. It was a decent game by itself, but compared to the original it left some things to be desired. I played it recently on my rig below and it's runs pretty well. The patches really helped. The worst part, as TheNuker mentioned, is the lack of mods. The original NWN kept me playing for 4 years because of the oustanding user made modules. There are almost no user modules available, compared to the original.

Again, taken on it's own it was pretty good. Just doesn't have the replayability that the original had.

so THATS why I wasnt seeing many mods even months after its release...I just assumed I was being impatient or something...well, I'm glad I didnt pay retail for any of the nwn2 software (BlackFriday FTMFW)

I liked NWN and its' expansions, but only made it through about half of NWN2 before I got bored.

I will say no, I enjoyed NWN 1 and all it's expansion.

Some of my pet peeves on NWN 2 are:

1. To many cut scenes and I mean many. Ugh, it got old fast.
2. To little items either found as loot or treasure. Unlike NWN 1, it seem loot was the same if you played it once or many times.
3. Cut scenes. Yea, I am bringing that one again.
4. Storyline seem convuleted (sp.). I have no idea who the main bad guy is. Well, I do but there are just to many "minions" that it's really hard to tell who the main bad guy is.

I want to point out that I have only played NWN2 even though I do have the expansions. It's just killer trying to get through that game. I find myself going back and playing NWN1.

The ending is purposely left open and was concluded in Mask of the Betrayer. So get MOTB if you want to know what happen after the fight with KOS. Also NWN2 uses walkmesh, so that's why the download is so huge. I have used both NWN 1 & 2 editor and i personally prefer NWN2 editor (way more powerful).

I enjoyed both the original NWN and NWN2.

If you're familiar with the original NWN interface, it really doesn't take much getting used to the NWN2 interface. On my old system, that had an Opteron 146, 2 GB memory, and a Radeon x1950 GT, it ran just fine, at 1152x854 resolution, with moderate eye candy.

I guess I'm in the minority so far, but I liked the game a lot. The characters are well-developed, and some of the interactions amongst your NPC's can be quite entertaining, indeed.

No, the mods aren't in great number just yet, but the community is growing, and decent mods are being put out. Someone even put out a pretty good rendition of the Hidden Shrine of Tamochan recently.

Of course, some of the storylines might not necessarily agree with what you experienced in NWN and the expansion packs, but if you approach the game with a mindset that these are two different games, then I honestly think you'll enjoy it.

The expansion pack, Mask of the Betrayer was an entertaining add-on as well. Very well developed characters, and it was nice to try out many of the new classes, such as Stormlord, Favored Soul, etc.

NWN2 was better than NWN 1, but there's not as much custom content.

The new expansion comming out later this year is going to put in a world map and have more party control, ala Baldur's Gate.

NWN 2 was OK, I enjoyed playing it but it still doesn't come close to BG/IWD quality.
