Thinking about passing down a couple old PCs to my kids, but I want to limit what sites they can visit. What's the best thing I can use? The two for the kids would be wireless, and mine wired, can I maintain the list of sites form my PC?

there's always editing the hosts file. you might be able to point the 2 kids computer's to a shared hosts file on yours for easy maintenance.

You could log them in as a non administrator account and then set content filters with IE, although then they'd have to use IE.

I checked out a few free ones and decided on Net Vizor for my buddy's computer about 6 months ago, and there haven't been any issues.

Well when my kid is old enough to use the computer I intend to manage a whitelist and NOT a blacklist.
its alot easier that way. IF they want to view a site you check 1st and if you are ok with it add it to your exception list

You can do it in some routers and limit sites by keywords, or programs, but really it's not worth it, because you can still get around it.

Depending on their age you may want to still physically monitor them. If they're 11-13 + I would just explain to them the don't give out your personal info and don't talk to anyone you don't know method.

They should be old enough to understand by 11-13. If not, then use your best judgment!

Just my opinion though, kudos!

:D

if you can get away with it whitelisting seems like the best option. That said, it means they cant go online to look up pictures for something.

Ok, thanks for the advice. They are actually 11 AND 13, and the 13 has already done some damage. His mother (he doesn't live with me full time) was letting him on the internet while using his full name and location. I'm pretty sure I've put the fear into him about that, but he's 13, and getting curious. I want to make sure he's not browsing uh... pRon.

Ah porn, the staple of every 13 year old male's internet experience.

*votes for the whitelist/supervised idea*

For 11 and 13 year olds, a standard filter (keeping out teh pr0n and such) and a briefing on internet security (personal and computer, like viruses and such) should be sufficient. Just make it a good filter because a 13 year old can figure out how to download firefox.

Whitelisting a 13 year old is a bit restrictive. Just get a good filter: http://internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/

Although honestly, I personally think that most 13 year olds are getting to the age where they should start being a little more responsible (a porn blocker is perfectly acceptable though), but of course I don't know you or the child.

Let's just say I don't want him to grow up to be a sex fiend like me. :)

Use open DNS for content filtering and run limited accounts for the two of them. Simple, sets up in 5 minutes, and free.

lolz - but I meant only block the porn, let him go to (almost) every other site (I just mean don't make a whitelist, that's so restrictive)

I agree a whitelist is super-restrictive BUT for young kids its the only way.
Now 13yo is a kinda are they/arn't they age and well that is upto the parents
