Best bang for buck card out now?

Hey guys,

I'm going over my computer shopping list again and noted that I didn't have a video card on there. I do recall that originally, I was going to be going with the EVGA 8800GTS, which was relatively cheap and offered performance. This is right before the time that nVidia was releasing the Series 9 of cards. I'm browsing around the forums and am looking for more guides / comparisons, hopefully something that would show me what's better than the 8800gts that's in the same price range.

Again, best "bang for the buck" is what I'm looking for. What do you guys think??
 
In terms of overall bang-for-buck performance, now's a GREAT time to buy. I just asked something along these lines and was pointed to the 9600GT on the Nvidia side of the fence, a 512 MB model of which you can now get for about $140 without trying.
 
Yeah that was the initial one I was looking at, specifically the EVGA at the time... hmm. I'm guessing the 9600gt cards, while cheaper, are not out performing the 8800GTS? Should I step up beyond the 9600? I would be willing to invest a bit more for a card that would be more decent and lasted longer.
 
There are better cards, but that $88 shipped 8800 GTS 320mb in [H]ot deals is one hell of a deal
 
I think it depends on what res you game

for 1280 and under you can't beat the 9600GT

up to 1920 the 8800GTS 512 is the best imo

and for anything in between the 8800GT
 
Right now I'm gaming at 1280x1024, but that's also because of my physical limitations between my existing video card, quality of my computer to handle the better resolutions, and my LCD monitor. I really do want to upgrade to a 22" LCD at some point, and would like to game at higher resolutions, so I definitely want something that will be able to compensate for all of that!
 
I just grabbed one of the $88 8800 GTS 320s... it's hard to beat that for performance/price
 
price performance that would be the $88 320mb 8800 GTS
then it would be the 9600GT

Where? The cheapest 9600GT I see is $120 after rebate + shipping (might be free shipping though).

The best bang/$ card I have seen recently is an 8800GT 512MB for $140AR.

arent the 8800gt and 9600gt pretty damn close? you think the 8800gt is worth $20 more than the 9600gt?

There was an factory OCed MSI on NewEgg for $110, and my sister got a Palit 9600GT SONIC off ZipZoomFly for $120 (both of them have pretty identical OC's- 50MHz core and 200MHz mem, but the Palit SONIC is a dual-slot with a few extra, nifty features and completely redesigned cooling; was amazed to see that for only $120).

Would definitely agree that a G92-8800GTS 512mb for $140 is the overall best bang for buck- just saying that if you're looking for something between $80 and $100, you should be able to find a 9600GT.
 
My 8800GTS 512 was awesome for $250, still waiting on that $20 rebate but even if I don't get it it was worth it.

Crysis is very playable all High 2x AA at 1680x1050 with this thing.
 
8800gts for $250 a deal?

8800gt and 9600gt are the best price point right now.... $100-$150 and great performance for everthing under 22"

u mean 8800gt 512? theres no gts 512 for $140
 
I just went through the whole process of deciding between 9600gt, 8800gt, and the 8800gts 512mb. I finally decided on the 8800gts 512mb from ecs, I was worried with an ecs product but it works great and for 169 after rebates you really can't beat it.It runs cool rivatuner says 38 ambient and 46 max, gpuz says it runs 31 ambient on oc well. Runs crysis at 1920x1080 with about 23 fps, with some dips, on very high specs in xp.

in the same boat as you right now. i've decided to wait a month until new cards are released mid june. borrowed a 9600 from a pal for right now. I'm going to buy a 8800gts, but i figure prices will drop when the new cards are released
 
Now I believe my next question is, when the next cards are released, or if it's out already, what is the next card directly above the 8800GTS that will last a bit longer?
 
Excellent, one of the websites I haven't quite made my way to yet... unfortunately I won't be able to hop on that deal anytime soon, unless I come up with the money and buy the VC before anything else... but thanks!

The 9600GT is around 15-20% slower than the 8800GT

The 8800GT is about 8-15% slower than the 8800GTS.

All roughly and depends on the game resolution IQ etc.

The small price gaps are pretty proportionate to the performance gaps. I think I would grab a 8800GTS if faced with the current decision or maybe a 8800GT all depending what deals are around.

Prices appear out of wack, not very useful.
