I was all set on picking up a DFI X48 board for this new system but after reading around I'm not sure if this is the best board for the setup. It's looking like 420fsb seems to be the threshold for a quad core on this board (or maybe it's the chipset?).

I don't need crossfire support, is there another board I should be looking at that will allow me to push it even further?

the Q9450 doesnt overclock very well anyway apparently..... i havent tried overclocking into those boundaries on my DFI X48 with a Q6600 but i know theres quite a few people on here that have and got some sweet OC's with a quad on these boards, they are highly rated.

Anyone have any recommendations? I am looking for the best performance possible (mainly in Visual Studio/SQL) but I play a few games on this box as well. I will be liquid cooling and the budget for board/memory/cpu is about $1000-$1200.

I have a DFI X38 and Q9300.

Have not really tried to push it very far, but I think you will be very satisfied, this board was definitely made for overclockers. Any limitations you run into would probably be due to the chipset or processor.

I haven't seen any other boards that can really do much better with a 45nm 12mb cache chip, +25-50mhz FSB may look good in benchmarks but in my experience doesn't relate to real world performance. FSB architecture has reached the end of the line. Seems you can go with a new 12mb cach and get better performance using multipliers or go with a duel core or 65nm quad and get your performance through FSB speed.

Edit:

This is my first DFI board and there are a couple issues, but coming from an asus 680i and 780i I am more than happy with the DFI. About 10x less instability.

What about a 780i based board? I have to admit I was turned off by my last 680i XFX board.

I don't think the 780i is going to be better - maybe the 790i would (read the review on [H]), but for a 8GB machine, the DDR3 costs would totally blow your budget.

I have a DFI X48 board with a Q9450 CPU and I have it running at 3.4GHZ with no problem whatsoever. I haven't pushed it yet. This was a quick OC and I have not played with the board settings yet as I'm busy with work.

3.6 on p35 dfi dark. run chilly and tears up video encoding. like the 9450 over the q6600 cooler and sse4 instructions plus more cache.

wankelguy13b,

I have a DFI X48 in route with a q9450. I would be very stoked to hear what settings you chose to get the 3.4. Very stoked. Not a seasoned overclocker by any means, so any details on your settings would be sweet!

3.6Ghz 24h prime stable on asus maximus with rampage bios mod, 8gb gskill ram, air cooling. I only had it for short time not done playing with it yet
