I started with 9800 Pro, now its 9800GTX....

Dang it kinda feels good! You know? its like subliminally im thinking....wow i have a 9800 again! ati's 9800 pro was my first card i really owned (had a 9700 but then returned it and bought 9800). I find it kinda funny, i think nvidias partneres should release something like

G9800 Pro.

Just here to reminisce, I remember so many games on my 9800 pro. I remember being obsessed with clocking it and testing it on Aquamark3.

It was a good time.
 
I was poor then. I had the 9500 Pro. Played cs perfectly fine until valve bought it out and updated cs to 1.6. Those were good times. It's amazing that card is still in service in my moms pc.

Hows the 9800GTX? What games do you play with it?
 
I remember the days when i had my 9800 pro. I loved it. Gave it to my dad not long ago. He's still using it and loves it.
 
My friend still has a 9800 pro in his computer at his moms. Its an emachine and he runs it on a Athlon xp 3000+ lol, still plays CS.

I dont have the 9800GTX just yet, i am stepping up to it from my 8800gts.... I think just the name made me stepup to it. The fact that its 9800 again lol. Plust it only has cost me 10 bucks.
 
my first graphic card was a 9800 pro. cost me about $270. Since then i never gone back to console gaming. (Well maybe once in a while.)
 
I think the 9800 pro was around $500 when I got it. I could be wrong. Was when it first came out.
 
My first card was a TNT2. I remember picking up a 9800Pro 256 for $475. That was the most I ever paid for card ever. I also think it was the highest end card I ever owned. I onlpy paid $350 for my GTS.

You know, I didn't even think of the 9800 Pro when this came out.

But the 9800 Pro is just like the GTX in that they are both re-hashes of the uber-card that completely dominated the competition.


Oh, and they are also alike in that they both have 256-bit memory bus.
 
I had a GeF4Ti4600 be4 my 9800Pro. Was a nice jump in performance. And I could actually use AA & AF without absolutely killing performance like the 4600 did. The 9800Pro was an awesome card for its time. Then I went to the x800xtpe and now my 8800gtx. Again, very nice jumps in performance.
 
Ya, i was poor too. I only had a 9500pro :( I still have that card too, but the fan died on it so it overheats and locks up on me.

Oddly enough, i only replaced it about 14 months ago. 9500pro > 1650pro > GTS320 > SLI 8800GT > SLI 8800GTS > Quad SLI (coming next week)

Heh, is that too many video cards in a years time?
 
Funny I was thinking the same thing on calling it the 9800. Though the Pro was not my first card it was a good card. My first card was a Diamond ......? can't remember the name it had an INDY racecar on the front to show it was fast:D. I bought it so I could run the orginal Wolfenstien faster, hahah the start of it all!
 
My first real card was a Ti4200, after which I got a 9700np. God that was a good card, flashed it w/ the pro bios and never had any problems. R300 was definitely one of the best cores in video card history, G80 is a close second.
 
Guess theres not too many 3dfx owners here, eh? Wish I remember the name on my first vid card, it may have been the voodoo 1, I don't recall.
 
Hmm.. my first card was a TNT2 m64... actually had only 32mb on it though hehe. Stepped up to a 9700 pro for $299 from ebay. It did a lot of good for me gaming cs and such til the nvidia 6800 gt's came out so I could play Far Cry smoothly :D then a 7800gtx ko, and now an 8800 gt. Waiting to see how well the 9800gtx will perform and what the price will be and perhaps I might invest in it or it's bigger sibling, or just plain wait it out til more resource hungry games come out hehe

@yeedubfreak There are others that have gone through pretty insane upgrades ^^ Don't blame you if you've got the money to burn. Hell, I'd do the same thing if I could :D
 
I had warranties with Compusa (back when they were in business) so i was able to upgrade my card very often. If i remember correctly here is how it went.

9800pro (died) -> 9800pro (again) -> 6800nu (didnt unlock)-> 6800nu (unlocked)-> x800xl -> 7800gt -> 8800gts 320mb -> 8800GTS 640mb 112sp -> 8800GTS 512 -> Now im soon to have 9800GTX.


Each upgrade until the 8800 512, cost me around 50-80 bucks. It was nice using my 2 year warranty.....but now :( i dont got one. lol. I wonder what bestbuys warranty is like, if it is similar.

I sold my 640mb to my friend for his comp build, and ordered myself a 8800gts 512, which im steppin up to a 9800gtx....<- its gonna be my last high end part....unless a friend builds a computer :).
 
My 1st discreet card was a ATI Rage PRO 128 AIW. Whhheeee!! It played Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, and Quake 3 great! It started struggling with games like No One Lives Forever. I don't even want to mention NOLF 2, it was running at like 3fps.

Here's my upgrade line.

Rage Pro 128 (still have it) > GeForce4 Ti 4200 (still have it) > Radeon 9250 (still have it but broke it) + FX 5200 > 6200 (flashed to 6600 @ 600MHz core/800MHZ mem) > 2x 7800GTX KO > HD2600 PRO.

I remember playing some of the first 3d games ever with 3dfx voodoo1 add-on card that I bought for $199. It as well worth it. 4 MB of video memory, correct? Quake on that card was a completely different experience. I remember playing a 3D rendition of Frogger too.

Ok, well I think I got a little confused there. It was actually the Voodoo3 3000 card I was thinking of. 16MB, monster for the time. I think it came with Unreal, that was sick back then. I also had Forsaken, no one seems to remember how insane that game was.

Thinking back though, I did have the 9700 Pro but I ended up selling it a few weeks later and getting a Geforce because it didn't support stereoscopic 3d like the nvidia card's did.
 
I haven't really upgraded my video card that much.

voodoo 2 --> voodoo 5 --> ti4200 -->x700

Voodoo5 lasted until warcraft 3 first came out. The textures were all jacked but ran warcraft 3 with no issues, other then the life tree looked like it was from candy land. :p
 
Funny you should start this thread, I was thinking the same thing!

Right now I'm using an AGP 9800Pro... And my next card is probably going to be a 9800GTX.
 
really? haha, thats awsome, Since you have kept a 9800 pro for so long, I would venture a guess that you are a smart consumer who is smart with his money, and has priorities. This would mean that the less you spend on a more powerful system the better. If this is somewhat true, I recommend you get the 8800GTS 512. Or the GT
 
Haha, my first REAL card was a Diamond Voodoo Banshee 16mb of onboard memory, and it came with a copy of Motocross Madness. My next card was Guillemot Geforce 256 32mb SDR... Haha good old times..
 
Yeah I remember getting Voodoo 1 after playing on 2 Mb tseng and P MMX now that was the biggest upgrade jump i ever did :D
 
Voodoo2 12MB's in SLI (Scan-Line Interleave) kept me busy for a while back then. I wish I still had them but I have no idea what happened to them. I believe they were with a P2 300MHz. :)
 
I still have 2 9800 pros sitting in the closet heh. One of my favorite cards of all time.
 
I loved my ati 9800 pro. Damn fine card.

I went from GeForce2 --> 9000 pro --> 9800 pro --> 7800GT --> 8800GTS 640mb 112sp --> 8800GTS 512mb --> 9800GX2.
 
i had the 9700PRO before that a ti4600 Ultra, i was spoiled back then! my first card as the ATi 128 All in wonder 32mb 2x AGP, played Quake III like nothing else!
 
I loved my 9800 Pro & probably would still be using it, except that last summer my power supply blew out a massive amount of smoke ... big time ... ruined my entire old Pentium 4 2.4 rig :(
 
IMO this new card should be called the 8900 GTS. A real GTX would be 512 interface, 1Gb ram, 800 core, and 1800 shader. You don't go backwards on interface size and ram for a card with a flagship suffix.
