Im not sure if there is the best place to ask but does anyone have any suggestions on how to start off in the IT field.....i have years of exp but no certs....what are the best certs to get first and where to get them

thanks in advance

How can you possibly choose IT as your main career if you have NO idea what certs are needed to even make any decent cash?

My suggestion, start looking at some jobs you might find interest in and see what their requirements are.

You're going about this all wrong.

hummm let me see.....well i have built over 100 PC's and servers. Ive installed many diffrent kinds of networks (mainly cat5) I worked in aerospace CNC for 10 years and i also did all the company's Computers and networks....so i have the EXP just no idea how to get the certs i need to move on to doing just IT work....

When you say "IT work" please understand that it is very general/vague. You need to be more specific. What exactly do you want to do? What part of IT do you want to pursue? PC Technician? System Administrator? Network Engineer? Give us a job title or position so others can have a better idea what certs would fit the type of work you want to do. From your prior experience, if you want to continue doing that (re: building systems), maybe get started with the Comptia A+ if you intend to go into contract work, as it is required alot for that type of work (at least in my area), regardless of your experience level. For network type work I'd recommend starting with the CCNA. System Administration certs would depend on what systems you would like to admin or must admin at work so I'm not going to recommend anything yet. But, please inform us of exactly what position(s) you want to pursue as it make it easier for people to recommend specific certs for you.

Well I'm kind of a youngin (18) and new to this field but I am starting off with a Network+ cert. After this I'm going after my CCNA and maybe some Microsoft Certs

A+, Net+, Server+ are always good certs to get your feet wet with. Not very expensive or difficult and it will give you a taste of what you will need to do to get the harder ones, ie MCP, MCSA/MCSE, CCNA.

Since you created a thread in a forum called "Networking & Security", I suggest that you start by acquiring the CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications, then you can move onto Microsoft or Cisco certifications depending on what you want to specialize in; Network or System Administrator.

I think this is a great suggestion. Really once you get either the A+ or Network+ you will be able to get your foot in the door with a company. Certs look good in the eyes of many employers and HR departments, but this isnt always the case. They have been getting smarter over the years and they want to see experience behind the certs. You say you have many years of at least basic to moderate level IT experience, so if i were you i would start applying for jobs based on my experience while still working on the A+/Network+ in the meantime.

Good Luck
