IE6 issues in XP PRO SP2

I am trying to help someone solve a problem so here goes.

Someone in our work place uses their personal lappy for work and then takes it home to do more work. We recently updated the hd so of course that meant having to reinstall windows which is not a big deal. (I like to reformat for fun)

I did all of this at my home and I had no issues with it. I gave it to the person at work and they used it the rest of the day with no issues.

the weirdness starts when this person goes home and can not login to any sites that require a username and password like hotmail, gmail, amazon ect. She can surf the web but logging in is impossible.

She brings is back to work so that I can take a look at it and it works fine here. She can login to any site just fine. She goes back home and she encounters the same problem. She brings it back the next day and it works fine at work. I take it back to my home and it works fine there too. So that leads me to believe that the issue might be here router.

Am I correct? I will make a house call in a day or two but I was wondering if there is something I am missing. Something obvious. She has tried the wireless connection and the wired connection at her home plus a slew of tweaks that I tried. I may not be able to solve it until I actually try to fix it at the location. I will also bring along my lappy as a control. I also have the old hd with the old windows install just for this type of thing incase it is in fact a windows setting.

Thanks in advance.

Can you define a little more precisely what you mean by "logging in is impossible"

Does the site allow you to enter username and password but does not accept them?

My only guess would be to check the proxy settings on IE.

Oh, and unless she absolutely needs IE6, I strongly suggest that she should upgrade to version 7. That could be the other problem right there.

correct. she can go to the site, enter her name and pass and click enter but thats when it hangs.

she tried firefox and no go. proxy settings are correct too.

basically it works fine at work, works fine at my home but not at hers.

Also, make sure the 128bit high encryption service pack or whatever it is called is installed. I remember having to do this to old computers so they could connect to the standard ssl sites.

Check for this by going to http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html

Open IE and click Help, About Internet Explorer and look at the Cipher Strength. It should be 128 bit. If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit, download and install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack.

It sounds like her router is blocking https sites

i hope so :(

verisign checker checked out fine, 128bit too.

ok, after a week of trying to fix this using all the knowledge in google the problem was resolved by reseting the router
