My friend is thinking about buying a gaming desktop and does not know if it would be worth going with the quad processor or not? He wants to know if its worth it or if he should just go with a dual and put the money he saves towards extra ram and a better video card

Go for a dual, its a much better option for gaming as performance increases for a quad only scales with programs specifically threaded to take advantage of the extra cores.

Thanks for the quick reply

I got the quad q6600 for my gaming PC that I bought like a week ago...maybe that was a mistake.

Are more programs going to be "threaded" to take advantage of the quad core now?

I would personally opt for a E8400 and overclock it as high as possible.
It's pretty much the same price...Q6600 vs E8400. It boils down to a matter of preferences and what you do with it. For pure gaming at the moment an E8400 has a slight edge

I went quad and I think it was a great upgrade. I mostly game but I also do some video encoding, and I would imagine that more games will be taking advantage of multiple processors before too long. I also got a great OC out of it.

The quad core, I hear, isn't maximized for games just yet. I have an E6850 Core 2 Duo. It runs great!

I'd jump on a quad Q6600/Q6700. You will hardly be able to tell the difference in games, hell you wouldn't be able to tell unless you were running benchmarks. The quad really shines when you have other programs working in the background. Mine makes life so much easier.

I also went with a Q6600 in my Dell E520 and while not really a 'gaming rig' the cpu upgrade made a huge difference. Price / performance i think its going to one of the better deals out there. Add in some descent ram and a descent video card and you've got a pretty awesome budget game machine. I paid 450 for my e520 and the cpu upgrade was only $240 on New Egg.

I would try and balance it out, having a c2d extreme is a waste if you only have cash left over for a 8600GT and a Gb of ram for example.

the cores dont do the optimizing my friend, the games have too.

as said above %95 of the time you wont notice the 5FPS diff between say a 3.4Ghz quad and a 4ghz 8400 or what ever.....

i would rather have more cores with a little less speed then 2 cores.
