Maybe I'm just way behind the times and completely missed the boat somewhere along the lines ...

But was reading Monday's review of the Palit GeForce 9600GT and saw this ..

Using the supplied cable connected to your audio card will allow you to output the audio from the GeForce 9600 GT Sonic

Someone want to explain why the vid card needs to output audio?

So that this card, when equipped with an HDMI interface, can output both the video and audio through one cable.

Pwnage!

Uh oh, I think I just got a cease and desist letter from Futuremark.

I got a question, I know that some ati already have this feature. Does anyone know if you can send the new Next-gen audio formats over an HDMI cable with these cards?

The core problem is that the AACS rules limit non-DRM protected path content to AC3, and neither SPDIF links (the Nvidia & old ATI solution) nor IntelHD audio over PCIe (the new ATI solution) are protected path. PCIe can be ... once kernel-level drivers are implemented in the OS (which AFAIK hasn't happened yet for Vista, and may never happen for XP).

The other option is IGP as the connection is not a "user accessable bus" -- so we have to wait for new motherboards with appropriate BIOS & driver support.
