So I am in need of another MP3 player as my dells hard drive took a shit after a month of getting it and well I don't got time for the BS.

So what is a decent MP3 player something along the lines of a 20gb-30gb.

Anyone tell me what the latest IPOD is besides the classic, or any other good suggestions.

Well my girlfriend read a lot of reviews on them as she was going to get me one and it had a lot of negatives about it, just as an ipod would so I guess I am torn.

I haven't had any real negatives with my Zune (Gen1).
I'm using the 64bit Zune software and it has been working flawlessly.

They're both good choices, but I personally like the Zune better, just because everyone and their brother has an Ipod :D

Very true.

Played with the Ipod touch yesterday, man it's so nice. They have a 16GB version out now or soon. The finger/touch interface makes it so much 'better', ofcourse it's just subjective. I didn't even bother playing with the other click wheel ipods.

Try one of the Creative MP3 players. I have a Creative Zen Micro Photo at 8GB, only problem, if it is a problem, not many accessories.

You should really tell us what kind of features you want:
Capacity: There are lots of Flash based players that go up to ~8GB, and flash means lighter weight, longer battery life, and shock-resistance. But if you have more music than that and you need to carry it ALL with you, like I do, then Flash simply isn't very viable.
File formats: Do you want/need to watch video files? What format is your music? If you only have mp3s, then this is easy, but I've personally got lots of FLAC files.
Price: Obviously
Sound Quality: The ipod has gotten better and the new Zune isn't a slouch, but brands like Cowon have a great reputation for SQ. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference with cheap earphones, but if you're the type who spends $100+ on earphones then its worth considering.
Software: Do you want to be able to Drag&Drop files, or would you prefer using software to sync?
Interface: Do you want to be able to sort by IDv3 tags? Or is directory-structure more your thing?

Most iRiver mp3 players kick ass, thought they have some models that are kinda iffy. Stay away from Sansa models!

You can get an older video ipod for really cheap now. No point in buying the latest one.

I need at least 20gb

It doesn't need to play videos or any of that stuff.

My price range is probably like 200$, could even check ebay if I need.

Want to be able to drag the files or just anything simple enough.

I'm torn between a zune and ipod.

I see the touch as more of a PDA than an mp3 player. So if you're looking for a personal organizer with mp3/video capability then get the touch, but if your focus will be audio/video I'd say look elsewhere. This is because the touch has a small hard drive, lower battery life, and is graphics-oriented.

I'd recommend an ipod. Unless you're an audiophile, the ipod is tried and true. It's intuitive, sleek, and a good bargain. Although it's not perfect (itunes, inconsistent battery life, scratches), on balance it's a damn good player.

Take a look at Archos. It's not the best choice if you listen to mp3s mostly, but it can do a lot of things well. You probably could find 604/5 30gb or 504 80gb for around $200 if you look hard enough..

Has anyone seen an player than can pan audio to the left or right so that you can listen to just one headphone?

I'm very much out of touch with mp3 players, but do all ipods require you to use the ipod software? I hate using that! The ripping quality is so poor! I'm a big voter for mpio becuz of FM radio. I've heard good things about Zune...

I've been very happy with my Zune, and it was cheaper than the ipod alternative (got mine on woot). The latest firmware is kind of a mixed bag with it, though. The one thing I do wish for is some open-source firmware like rockbox. You can't use Zune as a mass storage device by default, but there is an easy hack to fix this. Overall, I would recommend the Zune, as it's a great value for the money. I've also owned a Creative Zen Touch a few years ago (was stolen, and replaced with zune), and I've found creative makes some good mp3 players I think.

I have a Zen: Vision M and its wonderful. 30-60GB of storage, video, pic support. And it just looks nice. :)

I absolutely recommend it.

I vote toshiba gigabeat.. I have a 10gig one from about two years back still going strong.. 16ish hour battery life.. good sound.. easy to use software (now.. used to be crap).. good price..

I like the new Zune a lot - the "squircle" is surprisingly easy to use and I actually prefer the interface to the iPod gui. I say Zune; I would get one if they had real OSX support. I am stuck here on a Macbook wanting a Zune...for shame.

So overall then..

An ipod or a zune.

It's just going to be used as an mp3 player, really dont care about having movies and pictures and blah blah.

How are the software for each easy to use?

My ipod broke, so I went out and bought a Zune that was on sale at circuit city, and I love it. I hated using itunes all the time because my library would always bug if someone else's ipod used it.

I've had both iPods and a Zune. Personally, I like iTunes much better than the Zune software for a number of reasons:

First, organization is much nicer on iTunes, everything is in one organized list. Also you can make any number of dynamic playlists like top 25 most played, recently added and so on, I dont think you can do that with Zune but I could be wrong. I'm all about podcasts but, theres not as many for Zune as there is iTunes. One thing I will say is better on Zune is the marketplace, there was stuff on there that I couldn't find in iTunes. What I would do is try them both out, see which one you like better.

No, sadly, Zune has no dynamic playlists. Idiots. (Seriously. WTF.)

I dearly miss my iRiver H360 that had Rockbox, but my 80GB Zune is an acceptable replacement.

I have the 160gig classic. It suits me just fine, storage is great, battery life is great, I've dropped it a few times (enough to leave fairly decent looking scars) and it's going strong (maybe I've just been lucky, but I've roughed up my current iPod and my old 30gig Video quite a lot without any problems).

Haven't used any other options though so I couldn't pass judgement.

Just saying the iPod has done me well.

Has anyone seen an player than can pan audio to the left or right so that you can listen to just one headphone?

Any player that can be switched to mono output from stereo does that. Would be a hard option to search for in the specs, might have to ask for personal experiences. Should be a pretty standard option, my 5 year old rio can do it, but who knows these days.

I bought the Creative Zen W, larger then most players, its 60GB and has the screen the size of a PSP which is larger then any other MP3 Player, it also can play almost any video format and send it straight to your TV Via an output cable.

Speaking of the PSP, doesn't that play mp3's? Why doesn't anyone use it as an mp3 player? Is it just too expensive?

Actually it's quite a steal for everything it can do. The problem lies in the fact that it uses memory sticks instead of SD. They are still more expensive and not as universal as other formats. Aside from that it's rather bulky (the Creative is probably quite the beast too as the screen is roughly 3/4 of the PSPs total girth) and the button interface isn't focused towards media player use if your intentions are to use it for that. I'd imagine the battery life is also a concern there.

The Zen W is more competitive with an Archos type product, which I really have no use for as I already have a laptop with the same sized HD, DVD drive, unlimited codec compatibility, and a screen that's more than 4x larger. I just can't see myself carrying one of those monsters around in my pocket to walk around town with versus a "plain" mp3 player. If I'm on a trip the laptop is what I use. I'd be much more inclined to buy a PSP for long trips since that offers games that can't be had on either PMP or PC platforms and if necessary it offers media playback as well.

had a zune, got rid of that shit, worst software AND firmware ive everseen, just a crippled rebadged toshiba gigabeat. the HW is good but MS really fakked up the firmware options. it has little to no functionality at all

im using an 8GB Meizu M6, its less than $100 now and blows away any ipod to date (of equiv size)
it plays xvid out of the box, ogg, flac, mp3s, etc, etc features go sky high. excelent audio quality, much better than a crappy ipod. has a REAL EQ not some preset distortion BS like the zune and other mp3 players.

go to www.anythingbutipod.com has reviews on more than just looks, colors and peoples opinions that have nothing to do with the quality of the player..

I have the Creative Zen M 30gb. They are discontinued but some places like ebay still has them, you can always buy used too. Multiformat for music and movie support and has more colors than the ipod (picture quality) last time I checked. I like the wallpaper feature too. Comes with fm radio but I don't use that feature. Its also same weight or ligther than the 30gb Ipod, my friend has the 30gb ipod. After that you can get a bestskin protector (thick durable clear film) for the whole player and it will look new all the time.

Fact, you can mod a 30gb Zen M to a 60gb. Have the storage size of the 30gb without the mass of the 60gb version which is only sold from over seas.

Personally I choose mp3players (things that play music, and are meant toplay music and only music) that last a Looooong time on a charge or pair of batteries. Either you get a media player, or a true mp3player according to me. So I pick mp3 players with little or no screen, usually a grayscale is fine. Those last the longest on battery. Though I do have two nanos, iphone, several pdas, internet tablets, N75, Creative 40gb mp3player (grayscale) I like grayscale little mp3players the best, they kill everything else for battery time.

if you are willing to take something with less memory (like 8GB) then i would recommend a Meizu m6, pretty good, newegg always has deals for it
