Stalker: Huh?

Ok, question about the logistics of the game: if you complete a mission that was timed, do you have to get your reward by the end of that time period?

SPOILER: If I was to kill the bandit leader, do I have to get my reward in the time allotted for me to actually kill him?

Keep in mind those timed quests are just side quests. Yeah it's really annoying that you have to make it back in time for the cash reward, but don't get too upset.

People panning the game because they suck at it are just ridiculous. Stalker was an incredible game. Go back to playing Star Wars Battlefront (maybe lego star wars is better) if you can't handle it.

I think that's why it was called a "survival" FPS... not for those who can't survive :D

I think I can say this without spoiling anything: the scariest part of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was in one underground lab when there were absolutely no enemies for about 20 minutes. :) I tip-toed every step of the way.

There were still threats though, from anomalies and stuff. It reminded me of the first "level" or area that you go to in Vampire: Bloodlines -- a haunted hotel where there are no enemies but tons of creepy atmosphere. Turned out to be one of the best parts of the game.

^^^ sweet game and yes that was also a very creepy part to the game. lol damn good game when nothingness is scary

I've been playing this for the last few nights and I'm glad I waited until I got all my system upgrades done for now. Definitely an awesome game. Taking my time with it enjoying the sights. I'm actually sorry I didn't pick up the Collector's Edition when the game was released.

Off topic but did they change some of the rules for the forums? It's telling me I need 50 posts to be able to post in the FST area when I was doing it for a month or more already. Need to get an LCD to replace my dying CRT...

The game does definitely get better once you get into it. One thing is, you need to stick to certain areas and explore very slowly. Until you are equipped well enough, you shouldn't be going into certain areas. If you do the game will be insanely hard regardless of the set difficulty.

The game is easy if you take your time and use your brain.

I recently had a vacation and some time to spend gaming so I downloaded this from Steam and thought it was great. I played it on second level of difficulty and found the story and variety interesting and I am about half way through and looking forward to the next time I play it (like a good book). I actually made it through a entire underground level with a flashlight not realizing nightvision was available with the right bodyarmor. At one point a creature attacked (yes I was scared at my computer desk!) and died(quicksave is your friend!) At respawn I thought to myself ,forget trying to kill this thing. I energied up with power drinks, food and artifacts and ran as fast as I could away from this thing and got away to the next level. I spoke to my friend about this and he actually figured out how to kill the creature (vacuum monster). There are lots of twists and turns in this storyline like that and even some places where I had no idea what to do and resorted to a walkthrough (gamespot) for some hints or asked friends. Keeping in mind my version has the latest patches and I do prefer more simulation type stuff with lots of keyboard mouse options as opposed to console gamepad type stuff I believe Stalker is a good example of a Game built for PC that wasn't dumbed down(simplified?) for console play. On the other hand I'm sure much fun can be had on console systems but cheers to the developers and creators of Stalker!

Stalker was a fun and exciting game. I loved playing through it for hours. I had weapon caches with about 2x of every gun, tons of ammo, booze, food, and outfits in almost every "level". Then suddenly I was sneaking into a military base to acquire something for a dude and next thing I know game over. Made me feel like all my time and effort was for nothing the way the game ended abruptly.

How do you make your own caches? Do you just put your stuff in an existing cache?

Yeah, on your pda map it will show you peoples "hidden stashes" you sometimes when you kill someone, in any of those spots, their are some spots not on the map you can also find if you know the land, like tree stumps, and random safes dug directly into the ground (wtf). Any of those places work as stashes, they don't disappear. You can also use dead bodies.

I wouldn't count on using the bodies. I had one disappear while it was loaded. I came back to the area after a little while and all the spare bodies in the area were gone along with everything loose laying around. Not sure how often the game does a clean slate wiping of stuff but it does happen. This is a good thing though since I have some areas that get a bit choppy when there is tons of stuff laying around. I'm only guessing this is the reason as the rest of the game is quite nice running.

QFT, one of the best comments in this thread :D

Actally if developers would include resting and setting up camp this game would be a god damn 11/10 (at least for me). IIRC they wanted to include the need to rest but the idea was abanoned near the end. Anyway, I'm curious if they will dwell more into the survival aspect of the game in the prequel. The thing that worries me is that the only thing they've shown so far was a video of the player slaughtering legions of enemies.

Well, a trailer of the player sitting in a camp isn't very entertaining or enticing ;)

...but a trailer showing a spooky situation or some new game mechanics BETWEEN slaughtering legions of enemies would be better :)

Their are a few that don't disappear, such as the underground places, the ones that other NPCs kill, quest npcs, and their are a few other random bodies you just find, that stay there.

Anyone who plays this game needs to make sure patch 1.05 and the Oblivion Lost mod are installed before playing. It doesn't matter if it is your first or 5th time, these 2 mods all by themselves make stalker twice or three times the game it was to begin with (and it was practically game of the year to begin with). And the OL mod seems to work with multiplayer too, we had a blast at the last lan party with it.

Now, if only we could get the game stable on nvidia cards... all my lan buddies have nvidia 8800/9600 cards and all of us, every last one, gets BSODs in stalker with or without mods. This is not an isolated incident, google for this and you'll see countless threads (including one on the official nvidia forum).

I have played with various patches and mods I have not had one single blue screen on an 8600gt and Vista. the video driver did stop responding with a high overclock using one mod but once that mod was removed even that has never happened again. the only thing that drives me crazy is the little hitches in some parts of the game when trying to run.

Same for me, I cant remember the last time I even had a bsod on any game. I have had a ctd with Stalker every once in a while though.

Google can collect the best and the worst of information.

The reason I "suspect" nvidia is because its always nv4_disp.dll that causes the BSOD on all our machines. OC or not, intel or amd, loose or tight ram timings, even on a fresh install of windows on a rock stable machine we cannot get stalker stable on recent nvidia drivers with 8800/9600 cards -- of course this is only with 2 or 3 different motherboard types, we're not rich with extras lying about the place. It is sad, it's the only game that blue screens on me so far, and I've just spent the night playing Crysis on mostly high (very nice!), but stalker sure does BSOD a lot with this new upgrade... :(

I would suggest trying the Omega driver, lots of people over at the Oblivion Lost boards claim better performance and stability. Nvidia has admitted they need to put some attention on Stalker, but they will probably wait until Clear Sky comes out.

Incidentally this blue screen problem was eventually sorted by someone on another forum by simply lowering the texture option far enough so that the textures completely fit in video memory. For 512 cards that is one notch from the right. This problem appeared because of nvidia changing the way they managed texture memory, a good long time ago by now (1.5 years at least).
