Check out the [H] front page. It seems that not only is Best Buy now officially recommending Blu-Ray, but Netflix has dropped HD-DVD and will phase out the current movies. Netflix was always a good way to experience both formats without dropping $15-30 a movie.
If the war ain't over, it's getting a whole lot closer to being over.

Who ever decided on a maroon for HD-DVD packaging should be shot. People associate certain colors with certain things. Green = Money, Blue = Tech

Also, what stands out more when you’re walking down the isle, the blue BR cases, or the dark red HD-DVD cases. I think the answer is clear. I've taken only basic classes of package design, even I know you want to design something that stands out/grabs your attention.

Obviously there are lots of other reasons HD-DVD is starting its downfall, but still... the packaging sucks.

FFS, it would be a miracle for hddvd to pull back ground now, they would have to give them away for free and post to every household. IMO hddvd needs to die very quickly so i can get tranformers on bluray!!

I hate blu-ray's blue packaging so much. Looks so cheesy and usually doesn't match the actual artwork on the cover destorying the 'poster' design. But red/maroon is just as much as an attention getter as blue is. Finish you classes ;)

Wow netflix dropped HD dvd's. when did this happen I must have been sleeping.

Theres a difference between liking something, and something "poping out" or standing out. If your standing 100 feet away, that bright blue is going to stand out a lot more than that red.

Secondly, name off all the "tech" companys you know that have a logo that is maroon. Now how many are blue.

BTW I did finish my classes, I didn't major in package design, but I at least know the basics.

I working in Marketing and yes, the Blue packaging does stand out more. It's just a matter of it being more noticeable, not necessarily more aesthetically pleasing. If you look at the various DVD packages, the Blu Ray movies are immediately differentiated, but the darker maroon often causes the HD-DVD's to blend in and get lost. Their smaller package is often the only immediate give away.

However, the Blu-Ray name is 10x worse because it doesn't tell you what it is.
HD-DVD tells you exactly what you're getting. DVD has become a standard along with CD, and VHS/Videocasette. Blu-Ray...is just the name of the laser in the player. Can you imagine people talking about "getting that new movie on Blu-Ray" without thinking about it? I can't. I wonder if they'll start calling it a BR or BRD or something else.

Man that really sucks, Netflix was my one savior to the HD-DVD war. I got in on the $100 player and figured what the hell, but now im screwed. Guess who wont be getting any more of my money....

Blockbuster.com will still release HD-DVDs as far as I know.

Woot :)

Is it just me, but how the hell is Blue-Ray winning? It makes no sense... Outside fo the PS3 sales their players are way the fuck overpriced. I would have thought the first $100 player would have locked in the victory for HD-DVD...

Then again I guess most people dont have the TV's to even use the tech so its kinda a moot point.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are related to consoles which are, in turn, related to gaming.

Well Blu-Ray is. HDDVD really isnt except for the fact one of their players plugs into a 360 to play movies.

Hence the relation :D But now we're just arguing semantics here.

I'll continue to enjoy movies in both formats as long as I can. When the day comes of HD-DVD's ultimate demise, I'll build a library of HD-DVDs for $10 a copy. At least I can hope.

Goodbye HD-DVD I hardly knew you

hmm

None that are blue: IBM, MS, Sony, Toshiba, *I can keep going on but you said logo* :D

Blue however is also VERY easy to design with because it's a "Cool" color (not cool as in the sense of awesome but more of calming/inviting) . But doesn't mean it matches well with an already designed artwork (Blu-ray poster covers) Blu-ray covers are ugly and clashing. So ya. It would grab your eye more ;) Making something pop out more doesn't mean it's pretty.

Actually, IBM used blue in many of their commercials.

goooooooOOOOO higher prices and DRM! goooooodBYE burning your own HD media! hellooooOOOO widespread region coding!

Awesome times ahead

Maybe I'm missing it, but I completely fail to understand any of your arguement.

Higher prices. DVD had no digital video competition and somehow prices are fairly low. And DVD was expensive with $400 players at release. Takes time for market penetration to lower prices.

Burning HD Media. As far as I know, you can burn onto blu-ray recordable disks and they will play in a blu-ray player. Burning HD content onto a normal DVD-DL is dated anyway because of the limited space.

Region coding. Yup, same as DVD.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Blu-Ray is almost exactly the same as DVD on release. It's purpose is to offer a new video format and it does it fairly well. Hopefully now that there finally seems to be a standard shaping up we will see prices fall as it begins to penetrate the market more.

Because it's from SONY, duh!

Yeah, it's always the same complaints. Usually it's just sour grapes in having purchased the side that lost. You take that chance as an early adopter.

one thing that I'll look forward to out of this deal is all the bargain basement deals on left over HD-DVD content ...

..trying to be a "glass is half full" kind of guy . :(

Sky-high equipment prices? check
CSS/Macrovision? Check
PAL / NTSC / Region Coding? Check
lengthy debut of affordable recordable devices? Check

We've seen this same cycle with VHS, as well as DVD, and it would be the same with BR/HD-DVD regardless of the "winner"

He is saying it doesn't matter if it is pretty or not, blue stands out more than maroon. Something doesn't need to be pretty to get your attention (like a fat person).

heh.

I know That was my second response. Just saying though rather have something classier than attention getting (which can be both)

Rather see the clothed yet hot secretary than the extremely large naked fat man. Ya he got my attention! Didn't want it though!

That's true...I just wish the war had been more evenly fought for a while longer. I was Blu long before I bought an HD-DVD player...and I got spoiled by bi-weekly BOGO sales on BD movies where you could pick up two good movies for around $20 or less. Now that Warner shifted the balance of power...BOGO's are a thing of the past and $20 for one movie is the new "bargain" price. I actually think both formats are doomed to be niche products for the a/v hardcore....digital HD downloads are already here and will only pick up steam in the coming years.

I have a feeling that the low cost of HD-DVD vs. BluRay meant that players would sell better, but didn't make for better movie sales, as the HD-DVD movies were still costly. Thus, you had a lot of budget consumers get HD-DVD because they could afford it, only to find out that they couldn't afford $25 per movie.

BluRay on the other hand went to a more high-priced demographic who KNEW what they were buying and why they were buying it.

BluRay movies at BestBuy always cost me less than HD-DVD's for the same title.

DRM? Fuck that argument, it's all over the place and not really worth getting into.

As for burning your own HD media. I can show you some nifty stuff with my PS3 that will probably shut you up on that front, too.

Fucking fanboys just don't know when to stop and smell the coffee.

I'm glad you have such confidence in the benevolence and consumer friendliness of Sony and the BD cartel...but I have to ask: fanboy of what? I've had a PS3 since September 07 and own a total of 24 BD movies...my experience with HD-DVD will be 3 weeks this Friday and I only have 2 movies.;)

I'm interested- seriously, no bullshit. I don't have a PS3 (yet), but will be purchasing one very soon.
