Did I ruin my CPU?

I got my Q6600 a few days ago, and started building my new SLi rig.

I lapped the Ultra 120 eXtreme to a near mirror-finish, and decided to start on the CPU.

After performing about the same quality job on the processor, I find that the small black plastic cover that was supposed to protect it, has rubbed against it and from what I can see has scratched it in many different places.

This is the CPU:

And this is the culprit:

I can't afford a new one..
So.. is it ruined?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it will be ruined, all the contacts look like they still have a pretty good contact patch left, most are probley ground anyways, nothing looks fatal, but i just skimmed the pic.

Put it in and find out, but i like your chances.

Well since you lapped it Im guessing you voided your warranty anyway so what else can you do besides just putting it in and trying it?

I bet it still works. Do you have an el cheapo 775 board you can try it on first?

this is why you shouldn't lap your CPU lol....the 1 or 2 degrees of cooling isn't worth voiding your warranty....

looks fine, clean it off with a little isopropyl alcohol, dry it and shove it in. i bet it will stoke right up. if not, send it back to intel; tell them it came that way. jk.

CPUs are touhger than they look - I'll bet it is fine. Sockets on the other hand...

Well, thanks to everyone who tried to make me feel better.
But, if you could zoom in on the pic at it's native res (7.1MP) you can see how scratched it is.

The system should be ready in a few hours. I'll tell you guys if it works or not.

But my main fear is that it will work, but not well.

I don't even understand why you lap it in the first place. I can understand IF you bought the new CPU and HEATSINK and try it out first without lapping it to see what temperature you're getting. Now you won't even know what gain you have for lapping it. You only lapped it if you're are getting a real bad temperature or your heatsink isn't flat enough and is giving you a real high temp.

I looked at the picture. I don't really expect a few scratches will eliminate electrical contact. It may look ugly but unless those scratches are DEEP and a lot of material is removed I would suspect it should be fine. I don't think the little plastic cover is hard enough to do that. If contact is not being made on some of the pins my guess is that it'd be really fucked, not just "working but not properly".

Just my guess. I could be totally wrong.

this is true. but from most of the lapping results that i have seen, the degrees drop by at least 6-10 on every core. that's a huge difference, especially for anyone on an aircooled system that is overclocking.

i was afraid of this when i lapped my q66 so i didnt use the black cover, just rapped coffee filters around the top. i hope it works for you, if not you can buy mine :p (thinking of selling tbh) good luck

Well, some of the scratches just to the left of center and just below the center look pretty bad, but there doesn't seem to be an serious damage to the contacts. I'ld bet that it works just fine. But all my experience is with Zif sockets, so what do I know.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

They dont look like scratches but seem to be residue left from the black CPU protector.
The protector isnt hard enough to scratch like that.
If you can clean it carefully you may be able to remove the marks.

Chances are it will be fine even if you dont clean it as the points of contact are the little dots in the centre of each pad which look clean.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They don't look like scratches at all, they look like black plastic residue. They should polish off with some Isopropyl alcohol.

So a few hours has turned to into a full day. I guessed it didn't work?

I can't believe you didn't even try it out before lapping it, what if it was doa?
That'd be fun...

Good luck either way

It's just gunk from the black plastic CPU tray. Clean it with some alcohol swabs and the crap should come right off, if not clean it with some GOOF-OFF. (Xylene based cleaner) and then some alcohol.

You really should bench test everything before voiding warenties. Put it in fire it up should work.
