Auzentech Prelude still crackling/popping in Vista

Just wanted to follow up on this issue.
I'm aware that this issue is pretty well known for nvidia (esp. nforce4) chipsets, but I'm using an Intel P35 chipset.. So it does strike me a little odd here.

Basically, during normal window use - when listening to music, I hear slight popping and crackling pretty frequently. It's getting to a point where it has gotten quite annoying.

All drivers are upto date.

Has anyone come across any type of fix for this?

Thanks :(

You sure it's not clipping? Try turning the volume level down to 75% or so and see if it goes away.

Try tinkering with the Windows audio setting(s). Like select Stereo instead of 5.1 (if you have it) or 7.1) (if you have it) ect.

Mine was stuttering, not really popping. When I switched over to the JMicron RAID controller from the Intel it stopped doing it. Also, fixed my mouse lag.

Well I'm not totally sure what to name the sound.. I hear "ticks" coming from my speaker. Tried on-board and seems fine.

I just did a test, where I put all my overclocks down to default stock settings - and the "ticking (?)" is gone......

*edit* NVM it's still there.

So, now my dilemma is if I should go stock with no sound abnormalities or keep my oc and get annoying ticks in my music.... -_-

Watch the hard drive light and see if the crackling/popping coincides when the hard drive is accessed. I had this issue on my last computer with an Audigy, and it only happened when the drives on the integrated raid controller were accessed. When the main hard drive on a normal IDE chain was accessed, I didn't get the problem. It made playing games that access the hard drive while playing unbearable... which made me have to put it on the non-raid drive. :( Switching the card to another slot did not help either. It drove me nuts.

My new PC with a Gigabyte P35 mobo and Prelude works great.

No pci latency settings in the bios. And the PCI latency tool doesn't seem to work on vista 64.

And I took down my raid. All my drives are on non-raid at the moment.. =/

Maybe get an external DAC and use digital out on your Prelude. That's the best way to go anyway if you want to use your PC as a media center for your music collection.

I can use digital out to my z-5500's decoder. But from what i know so far, the same issue is there. Also, when using digital out - sound freezes every so often, like a broken record.

One thing I noticed this morning was that when I turn CMSS2 off or have it on Surround (had it on Xpand), the problem doesn't seem to occur. Still need to test it out a bit more to be sure, but it seems to be the case.

Are you still using the drives through the raid controller in IDE mode? I tried that and still had the issue. Although I'm still talking about my old system. I'm using an integrated SATA raid controller on my new Gigabyte P35 chipset board and no stuttering or sound issues...

Maybe this other recent post would help? http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1268252

What's your volume level set at?

I mentioned before that if it's set too high it can sometimes cause clipping, I noticed that if it was set too low though, say around 30-40% that I would get noticeable emi interference when I would scroll my mouse, use the mouse wheel, open programs etc.

If you're getting the ticks only when you OC it means that some component(s) are getting stressed to the point that they are causing RF interferance.

Try seating your soundcard in the lowest PCI slot and see if that helps. Otherwise try enabling spread spectrum in your bios.

Can you use digital out on your mb's soundcard instead of the Prelude to help weed out what the issue is? I use digital out from two computers into an EMU 0404 USB, one has Chaintech AV710 on Vista and the other is X-Fi on XP and both work perfectly.

I generally try to set the windows volume level at around 50%.

Initially I thought it was the OC, but I edited the post and stated that it's still there. ^_^

Well I tried the analog on my on-board and it seems to be better in terms of clipping and crackling. The x-fi chip is known to have issues on vista, but I was just hoping there will be a solution.. Although the prelude solves alot of the issues from my previous creative branded x-fi, there are still a few annoyances.

I'll try the digital out via my onboard tonight.

Opps, must've missed that :O

Try playing around with spread spectrum in any case and see if it helps. Because if it does, it's an EMI thing.

As I have stated before. It kind of seems like x-fi's CMSS2 (xpand) is to blame (?).
When it is off or on surround, I don't notice it. Well, it may still be there but not as evident. I just don't get it....

All my drives are SATA.

Sorry, "IDE mode" on my Gigabyte motherboard means non-raid mode, sata or not. Basically I wanted to make sure it wasn't plugged into any raid-capable controllers. Sounds like you already figured this out. ;)

i guarantee that it is your pci latency settings.

I am in the same situation right now. I am dual booting vista 64 and xp pro 32.

In xp pro 32 I can get PCI Latency tool 2 to work and adjust my settings... clicking and popping is gone.

In Vista 64, none of the PCI latency tool versions work so, the clicking and popping continues.

It sucks big time.

I've never had an issue with my Auzentech XFI. I purchased it just over a month ago with the Logitech Z-5500 speaker system. Using the driver released on December 28th, 2007. No sound issues what so ever. Crystal clear. Running on the system in my sig.

Yeah, it seems to be somewhat of an isolated case. Mostly depending on the motherboard.. =/
