Got my G92 8800 GTS. Question about the fan.

Well, my new G92 8800 GTS came in today. I was surprised at how quick I got it. I ordered it from newegg yesterday morning, and I got it today. Pretty stoked, though. I just sold my trusty eVGA 7950 GX2, so that's what I'm upgrading from. I've only had it in for a few hours now, but I must say I love it. I've noticed a significant improvement in games. Plus, it came with Crysis, so I played a bit of that earlier after putting it in, all high settings, no AA, and the frames never went much below 30. 27fps-ish is about the lowest, so that's pretty sick. I haven't run 3Dmark06 yet, but I'll probably do it tomorrow just to see what it gets. But yeah, mainly I was just wondering about the fan. I read a lot of people saying that you should use RivaTuner to set a new profile for the fan, and was wondering if you all would recommend it? It idles around 48C, and the highest I saw was like 68C I believe. My 7950 got hotter than that, so it seems fine to me, but I just wanted to get another opinion basically. Thanks. Also, here's some pictures.

So sparse looking without a massive video card in there.

68C is fine, though it's a bit high for that card. It's not one of the factory OCed cards, is it?

The fan was more of an issue with the early 8800GT's. The 8800GTS actually has a pretty beefy cooler. Extra cooling is always good, especially if you're overclocking, so crank it if you want, but I don't think you necessarily need to increase it like on the 8800GT.

Wooo Clock3, what HS is that you got on the CPU?

Looks massive! :)

I'm looking for something new for my next rig. Not sure if I want to Water Cool (never done this) or just stick with Air.

before i use riva to adjust my fan i was getting 53ish on idle and about the same with yours on load 68ish. stock fan is set at 29% i think then i set it fixed at 60% and now it idles at 41c and 58c on under load.

The HSF is this one: http://www.avc.com.tw/products/Z9H741K.htm
It's not bad, but I don't think it's the best. I've been wanting a Zalman (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019), but it's too expensive for something I don't absolutely need right now, haha. With the HSF right now, it idles around 43C, and I don't recall what it gets up to under load. Like 60C maybe? Like I said, it's not terrible, but it could be better I'm sure.

You may get better OCing results if you crank the fan (at least I did). Even though the card wasn't getting hot at all according to hardware monitoring, it made a difference for me.

The Zalman underperforms for its price bracket. You can get a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and a fan for maybe $5 more total that will completely destroy it, performance-wise.

If price is the issue pick up one of these ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 for $50 shipped $40 AR. Nearly as good as the Thermalright, better than the Zalman, cheaper than both.

Alright, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something or what, but for some reason I can't access the fan controls in RivaTuner. In the guide, it says to click the "Customize" next to the spot where it says 'Forceware Detected' in the Driver Settings section. Well, for some reaosn, I don't have a customize option. Not sure if anyone knows what I can do to get this? Here's what it looks like for me:

Thanks for any help.

Gotta edit the config file. It doesn't know what your card is cause it was released after RivaTuner 2.06 was.

Edit RivaTuner.cfg file (in the RivaTuner installation folder) and add G92 = 600h below G92 = 610h-61Fh. Make sure you make it its own line. Then everything will work fine.

This guide is good for general stuff (though it doesn't mention the above edit, slightly dated) if you're still confused.

68C at load is nothing if we're talking about real load. ;) If you want to see your card heat up run the oZone3D fur app in stability mode @ 1280x10244 windowed with MSAA0. :D

Well, I just ran 3DMark06, just to see what kind of a score I came up with. I'm happy with it. I got somewhere around a high 7,000 - near 8,000 with my old card. Here's a screenshot.

Ahh... Is that an Alienware you have?
It is a great card though. Nice purchase.

Yeah, how could you tell? The card on the bottom of the case or the side panel connector or something? Technically, yeah, it's an Alienware, but I've done a lot to it myself. Looking back I wish I had built my own, but oh well. It was my first time going with a custom computer, so I didn't know as much as I do now as far as putting one together from scratch, and I knew someone that had an older Alienware system who recommended them to me. I'm planning on getting a new case at some point and transferring it all to that, and then I'll probably sell the Alienware case on eBay or something. I want something more simple and clean looking now, you know? Hardware wise and such, it's not a bad computer by any means, but long story short I haven't been the most pleased with the company. I've had to go through and fix a bunch of their mistakes, so even though they built it for me, I've had to take a lot apart and such, haha. Basically, I learned a lot about how computers go together and how to build them from taking it apart. I could go through all of it, but it'd take much too long, haha.

It just looks pretty hefty! :)

My current HSF is a Zalman 9500. Does it's job well. No complaints. Just curious about water cooling. I haven't heard too many horror stories of the liquid leaking so...I figure it's relatively idiot proof now.

Eh watercooling isnt as glamerous as you think. Sure it will get you good temps, but no, its not idiot proof. You need to test your system very thoroughly and know how to set one up before you start. With air cooling you need no maintenance, with watercooling you need to refill liquid etc.....
Also, a decent watercooling system for card, cpu, and nb/sb will cost around $300-400.

OOOhhhkay...then.

Nevermind watercooling. hahahah

I'll stick to the Zalman or other equivalent :)
