Ok here's the dealio.
I got a Shuttle PC that I'm selling to my neighbor downstairs from me.
He has a 60" HDMI, SVIDEO, and COMPONENT only Mitsubishi HDTV. (No VGA, No DVI)

In my Shuttle I'm selling to him has a Geforce 6800GT, 1GB RAM, HDD, etc.

Now recently I bought an ATi 3870HD that had one of those DVI to HDMI converters packed in the box.
Pictured here:

Since I don't use HDMI I decided to give it a try yesterday to see if I can connect the Shuttle PC to his HDTV using the ATi Adapter.
The TV saw that there was something connected to the HDMI port but I got no picture.
Now I decided to fire up my other PC upstairs (with the 3870 in it) and set the resolution to 800X600 60hz. Then shut it down and connected it to the HDTV.
IT WORKED.

Essentially here are my questions:

1: Have any of you converted your DVI out of your PC to HDMI? If so what video card/adapter???
2: Do you think that perhaps the ATi adapter shown in my post is for the 3870 only?

Just curious... and thanks!

Yes, I've done this with many cards. I've never done it with a dongle like you have though. I just bought a DVI to HDMI cable from Fry's.

I don't own a 3870, so I couldnt say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that dongle only works with that card (or at least only with ATI cards). Just like the RGB dongle on an ATI card won't work with an Nvidia card and vice versa (although they both connect via an "s-video" style connector to the video card).

Hopefully this helps.

Hmm DVI to HDMI cable...
Perhaps that's the problem i'm running into.

Thanks.

I'll Look into it.

I recently bought a 5m DVI to HDMI cable to go with my new tv, it esentially is set up as a second display and not a clone of the first one. It works fine and ive had no problems with it so far. I am using a G23 8800 GTS with it.

As for the DVI/HDMI dongle, i dont see why it shouldnt work with any video card with a dvi port. I have seen the dongles for sale seperately (was intending to get one in the future if i cant find a longer dvi to hdmi cable. Im assuming you set the resolution of the display to that of the tv. but as wilsonrdfl said it could be made to only work with ati cards.

According to ATI, and user reports, the ATI DVI-to-HDMI dongle for the HD2xxx and HD3xxx cards is a special (read "proprietary") design -- see links near the bottom of this post.

So, the proprietary ATI DVI-to-HDMI dongle may be the problem. Attaching a "normal" DVI-to-HDMI adaptor/cable to the Shuttle may work better.

I have an ATI HD3870 and this is my experience with my LG L246WP-BN monitor and Sony KDS-60A3000 TV both with HDMI inputs with both a generic DVI to HDMI converter cable, and the ATI HDMI "dongle" with a standard HDMI cable. Both can decode the audio over HDMI that my Time Warner supplied Scientific Atlanta 8300HD PVR box supplies.

DVI-HDMI cable:
Sony TV is fine (1920x1080), LG Monitor is fine (1920x1200) both at full resolutions.

HDMI Dongle with HDMI cable:
Sony TV is fine, LG Monitor can't figure out what the resolution is and displays a really overscanned picture and the colours are much brighter than they would be no matter what resolution I try.

I haven't tried passing sound from my PC to the TV or monitor.

Looking at the ATI HDMI Dongle's DVI end, compared to the DVI-HDMI cable, there are more pins in the middle that the DVI-HDMI cable doesn't have... so there is a difference.

Some monitors just don't work quite right with the ATI HDMI dongle, like some DVI monitors don't seem to like the HD38x0 cards either.

Wow dude, mega thanks on your input.
Once again the power of the interntet prevails in the fight with our enthusiast hardware.

Thanks!
