New machine is up, and a few questions about these newer heatsinks.

To start, I haven't really even kept up with hardware since my last build. Out of the blue a few days ago I wanted a new machine and all the parts came in.

Abit IP35 Pro
E6750
4gig Corsair XMS2

Since I want to get back into overclocking what is the current best Air cooler?

I still have an old swifttech waterblock that i have used through the years, and I looked and 'm sure i could adapt it to the socket 775 as I have adapted it to other sockets without issue, but problems now are just the hassle of WC.

And second qustion, why are the newer Heatsinks for the intel round? ( or some anyways ) Any particular reason?

I might just lap the standard stock intel Heatsink, and stick one of my 92 MM, 120 CM fans ( f****ing loud, rated at 56+ DBs ) for fun to see what temps I get.

currently it idles at 34-36, and under a few hours of prime 95 at about 58C load.
running on vista 64 ultimate.

I just recently got my system in sig up and running. Im using the Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120, and it seems to be working quite well. Im just starting my overclocking testing, but right now im at 32 idle 55 load (prime95 x2 threads) @ 3.2. My voltages are still a tad high, I know, as im really trying to push to 450 FSB.

Word of caution, the Tuniq tower is massive. I hear the scythe ninja, and the thermalright 90(or something) are great as well.

yes afaik the ultra 120 extreme still gets the best results, it's big and costs a bit more though.

I have the Gemini II with 2 120MM fans installed and my temps havent risen more than 10 degrees C from Idle to full load. Idle currently at 29-32C and the max temp Ive had so far is 40C after an hour of running Crysis. I know this isnt the best way to load a CPU, but with my previous cooler the temps would approach almost 60C under the same load. Only downside is, it is a big, big heatsink.

I too have the tuniq tower. It is a freaking BEAST when you install it. However I get great temperatures from it. Usually something like 37/36/30/30 @ idle and something like 45/45/38/38 on load.

So as i stated I was bored and I lapped the stock intel HS. And I put on another fan.

Cores are now reading around 48-49C under full load. Almost 10C drop.

Not to shabby.

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is the more or less undisputed air cooling champion right now. The Thermalright Ultima-90 is close in cooling power but smaller and lighter so cases where the 120 Extreme won't fit it gets recommended a lot.

The Sunbeam Tuniq 120 is also a popular option, as others have said.

You can't do much better than the Scythe Ninja or Infinity in the $40 range.

The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or Coolermaster Hyper TX-2 tend to be recommended for super-budget-conscious people.

So that's the current air cooler run-down.

The Gemini II another recommended is mediocre at best with the dual and quad cores, but it was free or near to free after rebate for a long time, so quite a few people here have them.

Aside from the Ultra 120 extreme and the Tuniq Tower, the Noctua NH-U12P is pretty good. It comes with the best quiet fan so that makes up for the price. It also several advantages over the Ultra 120 extreme; it has better clearance, it's more lightweight, and has clips and rubber strips to mount a second fan.
