This is a surprise move. What what i heard the 1695 chipsets are manufactured in 2007 and not some old stocks left over.

ASRock has created the first Phenom compatible board that supports both AGP and PCIe graphics card. Not only that, it comes with GbE, eSATA2, HDA etc. It is the Alibaba board for Phenom - basically it supports anything you could have thought of. So you have a reason to stay put with your favourite AGP card and upgrade to Phenom X4

This is great news IMHO... :)

ULI was doing some G-R-E-A-T things until
nViagra bought and squashed them... :(

I'm hoping some of that innovation is going to return...

Looks like a mainboard you'd use if you were a system integrator...

Either that or a replacement for some IT department that keeps all of their old crap on a shelf...

seriously cant we just get rid of AGP cards already, who's seriously going to upgrade to the newest chipset with new ram then put in a AGP vid card, come on. Maybe I'm missing something

It is a way to spread the upgrade over some time by using some old hardware. Same goes for someone that doesn't game.

Generaly though I agree with you on letting agp die in a sence.

Majority of new onboard graphics I'm sure are on par with vast majority of AGP cards, and those AGP cards that are new you have to pay a premium on because they are AGP. The math doesn't work, or common sense.

Given the choice I would rather have a card in the system then onboard that steals system memory. That being said I would rather have a 30 or 40 dollar pci express card but you never know.

What if you have recently upgraded to a card like e.g. X1950Pro AGP? With this mainboard you can switch to latest CPUs and keep your current card. I'm sure there will be users who will appreciate this.

Exactly... ;)

Not everyone upgrades their entire platform every 3-6 months...

The other (and somewhat more important to me) nice features
of this board is that it has 2 x IDE, 2 x SATA, 2 x SATAII, 1 x eSATAII
as well as GbE, etc., etc...

Check out the manual:
http://www.asrock.com/mb/manual.asp?Model=ALiveDual-eSATA2&s=

AND it uses the nVidia (ULI) M1695 chipset and is capable of letting
someone who can't now afford a Phenom, or wants to wait for the
later and probably bigger and improved versions, run what they already
have NOW...!

Anyways, AGP is really just a "Small" part of what this MB is
all about... ;)

Wizzard I have the same board as you and absolutely love it for the specific reasons you are talking about. When I upgrade the board and processor I could not afford to get the new card and more ram at the same time, just swapped almost all my old stuff over and I was good for a few months while I saved. I was pissed when I heard Nvidia was taking it over to close it down...bastards. Good to see they are coming back!!!

I love these upgrade style boards and the ASRock with the ULI
chipset was the best of them all...

I upgraded from an abit AN7 (which I was running the X1950 Pro in)
and all I needed was the MB and CPU (4000+ Sandi)... Later added the
AM2CPU daughter card and moved up to the 6400+ and DDR2 800...

I'm hoping they make something like an AM2/AM2+ board that
upgrades to something like Socket F...

Nice talking to a fellow (Happy) 939DUAL owner... :D

Go ASRock...!!! Go ULI...!!! :p

because not everyone games on their computer and their AGP card works just fine for them?

And not everyone is MADE OF MONEY either... ;)

My X1950Pro games just fine on my "Upgrade" style MB...

I bought it to use with my AN7 w/ 2500+ Mobile @ 2450MHz... When
I bought this 939DUAL all I needed was a CPU (4000+ Sandi for $60)
and used EVERYTHING else... Later I added the AM2CPU upgrade
daughter card and went AM2 6400+ and DDR2 800...

As I said previously, this is about the re-release of the (ULI) M1695
chipset and AGP is just a SMALL part of of it... Anyone who wants
to upgrade and use MOST of the hardware they already own will
appreciate this fact and later, when future Phenom's are released with
"improvements", BIG HONKIN' CORES and lower prices they could
move right up with just a processor...

I have plans myself to go PCIE next year but this AGP has been doing
me "Just Fine" for over a year now... It plays ALL of the latest games
without a hitch and will hold out until I decide to make the move... Possibly
to an HD3870 X2 or maybe I'll wait for the Multi-Cores that ATI should be
releasing sometime in the new year... And all the while I'm saving money
until then... ;)

its about time i am still kinda mad at asrock for killing the 939 dual boards when i wanted one last year

That board has a terrible layout. Beyond that this is a niche product, and as such has limited value.

because not everyone games on their computer and their AGP card works just fine for them?

If you don't game on your computer, this product makes even less sense. That means that anyone who isn't a gamer probably has a lower end AGP card to begin with, and a $50 PCIe card will suit them just fine. This makes the board in question with its' legacy AGP support even less usefull.

Only, if you have everything else you need, and a more expensive AGP card made in the last year or so would be worth transplanting into a newer machine. Honestly I think at this point it makes more sense to save your cash until you can replace the video card along with the motherboard and CPU.

ASRock didn't "Kill the Board"... NVidia bought ULI and KILLED
the M1695 / M1567 chipset...

Without that chipset the 939DUAL would not be possible. That
chipset is the reason it had full speed AGP 8x AND full speed
PCIE 16x... It also was one of the highest O'Clockers of the
time even though it was an economy class board...

NVidia bought ULI and stopped making the chipset... ASRock couldn't
make the board without it... :(

The ULI M1695 was better than anything NVidia had at the time
but was never popular because it was only manufactured for a
short time before NVidia bought ULI...

Now NVidia has decided to remanufacture the (ULI) M1695 and
I've heard that some of the original ULI engineers of this chip are
working for NVidia on possible future development of this chipset
line...

This thread is about the ULI (NVidia) M1695 chip being re-released
and manufactured again... And the possibility of future chips based
on this design...

It's NOT about AGP vs. PCIE...

I can't agree with this at all. I'll take NVIDIA drivers over ULI's any day of the week.

Relax, it isn't worth getting bent out of shape over it. The point was that this is a niche product, and as such holds interest for a very select few.
