Newegg had some ddr2667 Patriot ram in 2x2gb sticks for $200 (recent price drop), and pulled the trigger. My MBP detected it no problem and it has been smoking fast in Fusion - a great upgrade IMAO for certain apps.

No problems thus far, and if you want to make the jump to 4gb, this is a good deal. I felt compelled to share my experiences on this with you guys.

That is some deal. And of course they're out of stock right now.

yeah thats a great price. I bought a 4gb kit of Geil off a member here on [H]forums. Yeah great upgrade..!

You can get 4gb (2x2) Gskill or Mushkin brand for $153 shipped from Newegg (gskill is 149 + 4 shipping, muskin is 153 + free shipping); both are excellent RAM.

Its an extremely worthwhile upgrade even if you're not using pro apps. It makes your computer so much faster at everyday things at a cost thats really not too bad these days. Applications fly open, the computer boots faster and you can multitask much better. Your computer might run fine now, but it makes it better no matter what you have (unless you already have 4gb)

OSX LOVES ram and will use up whatever you throw at it. The extra will not go to waste - its always making your computer faster.

I've got the 2.16GHz C2D MBP. Anyone know what the max RAM is on this? I've dug around a little bit but can't quite find the answer.

I think that the 2.16ghz MBPs had a 3GB limit... but my memory is fuzzy.... no pun intended.

I believe the macbooks just upgraded their architecture so that you could have up to 4gigs of memory.

If the macbook pros cannot do the same, there is something wrong.

ive been shopping around the past month for a 4gig upgrade for my 2.4ghz mbp but i wasnt sure what ram worked best with the laptop (if there were compatibility issues, etc)

ive been looking at patriot, corsair value, mushkin, and gskill because they have the best prices, but crucial is getting cheaper.

any suggestions on what brand is best? or is any old 2gig pc5300 stick going to work fine?

don't mean to thread jack, just thought the question may help others as well

I love Mushkin but had a compatibility issues with it; my patriot ram works great, and this is the first time I have ever used Patriot. So if you want documented proof of compatibility at least on ddr667, you have it from my experiences, but you can always RMA incompatible sticks, and maybe my Mushkins weer just bad (love them on the desktop).

thanks, newegg has a great deal on 2 x 2gig mushkin right now, $145 shipped free.
seems ram prices have dropped a lot in the last month

I'm using a Mushkin 2GB stick in my aluminum iMac (which has largely the same guts as the MBP). So far I've had no issues with it, and having 3GB of total RAM has definitely helped out.

Ok, so my 2.16 C2D MBP only supports 3GB. Right now I have two 1GB chips installed. Do you think it'd be a noticeable difference at all if I bought a 2GB stick and swapped out one of the 1GB sticks and maxed the thing out? RAM prices seem to be pretty low right now so I'm tempted. Not that there's anything wrong with my machine now, it runs fine. I just like to know I have the best setup I can possibly have.

I primarily use my machine for surfing with Safari and Firefox, some Adium and MSN Messenger, MS Office apps, lots of iTunes, VLC, Front Row, a little Audacity, light photo editing with a program called Toy Viewer, some torrenting, Mac The Ripper, Popcorn...you get the picture. I do a little bit of everything and some multi tasking but none of it is too resource intensive except for the rare Parallels fuckaround I like doing.

Do you think the machine would have an overall snappier feel if I upgraded the RAM?

edit: I am running 10.5.1 if that would be any more of a reason to get more RAM.

If you're already at 2GB? Not really. Better to pocket the money for your eventual system replacement.

So basically, for what I'm doing, the general consensus is that going from 2GB to 3GB on my system wouldn't really result in a noticeable upgrade. I will say that since installing Leopard my system seems a tad slower to launch apps and I get the spinning beach ball a tad more often than I'd like.

4GB was a significant upgrade from 2GB while running 10.4 Tiger, and even more so with 10.5 Leopard.
