So I have a problem. My Fat sister inlaw lives with me, she does nothing but sit and use the computer, works part time, doesn't pay her way. Just sits her fat ass down and plays on the web. I need a software solution for XP Pro to block ALL web access on her account. She can't know its happening, it needs to be transparent.

unplug the network cable?

how would she not know that the internet is down? I don't get it?

you could just plug her into a router that dosn't have an internet connection. that way she still gets an IP address but no internet.

I have problems with my router/road runner all the time. So she normally thinks the web is down. I can shut down ALL access from my router. I but I need to be able to use WiFi on my laptop.

Shes smarter than just unpluging the cable.

Create her an account on the machine. Don't give the account admin rights. Set passwords for all other accounts. Disable the NIC via an admin account.

How about be up front with her and tell her to get a job and pay rent or get out? You have nothing to lose if she's not contributing in the first place.

Deceit would just get you in more trouble than you're probably able to handle considering you're unable to confront her.

Believe me, I want her out, and off my PC. She's screwed up my flooring with the chair, warped my desk, and got everything covered in chicken grease (no lie).

But I am not allowed to confront her. The other half says no.

So its easyier to just disable the web.

Except that one day you'll be using the web on your laptop while she thinks it's down on the desktop, and she will see you, and figure something's up.

Disabling the web is only a short-term solution. The long-term solution is to get her out of there, which apparently requires first getting your wife to do a 180. She doesn't have to be vicious to her sister to give you what you need - your home and computer to yourselves. Keeping the fat lady there, meanwhile, is beginning to wear on you and may eventually cause damage to your relationship.

That said, here is a more devious approach you could try (though everyone will end up pissed off at you if it goes very wrong):

You could turn on the internet-lock on a software firewall. Or remove the NIC and close up the slot (nothing obviously unplugged). Then doctor up a fake excessive-bandwidth-warning letter to show to sister-in-law, and tell her that her epic surfing sessions have gotten your account suspended, and there's no more free ride - if she wants to use your net, she should get her own computer (stop greasing up yours) and start paying 1/3 of the bill.

Thats a good idea, and it has already put a strain on things. But things are in the works to get her out, in the mean time I need her ass up and moving, burning calories.

So unless I can find an XP solution, its back to Vista where I can simply disable web access.

create a new network connection, type in random numbers for the IP address and DNS etc. save, when you use the computer, enter the correct IP and DNS number. problems solved.

Depending on your router, you can block network/internet access by ip and or mac address.

just take the chair away... that fat ass won't be able to stand for long!

Or disable DHCP on your router and assign static IP addresses to the comuters, and give hers a different IP and subnet. everything will look legit and the internet won't work

Don't give her a Gateway or DNS server and it'll not work but will still be able to share printers and files.

Statically configure her DNS server entries with bogus IP's.

Why not just put in a fake proxy so that it looks like it's trying to work but then ultimately fails?

Chop the end of the network cable off then crimp your own on ensuring that non of the pins make contact with the wire. :p

bwhahahahahaha, this thread has me cracking up here at work. Beautiful stuff :D

I got an idea, tell her that KFC is building a new restaurant by the local projects? Perhaps that will speed up the process of getting her obese ass out.

Seriously though, the most non-obvious method would be to filter either her MAC address at your router or apply ACL's if it supports it like Nacho recommended. Then play dumb and act like you have no idea whats going on and use the bathroom everytime you want to use the internet :p Just hope that her fat boyfriend doesn't come over to fix the problem or you're done. heh

I wouldn't doctor up a letter though man, too risky. If she finds out its bullshit you're now into the realm of lying and that could severly backfire your plans of removing the farm animal from your house. She will get all defensive and then tell her sister that she can stay for as long as she wants... eek

I feel for ya bro, sorry

Write scripts that will release and renew her IP address.

Have task manager run them somewhat randomly

Set up an older box. Maybe a PIII or something. Place it outside of your room. The name on that account could be something like - Chicken Grease. Then lock your shit down with encryption, multi word passwords with numbers and a fingerprint scanner. Then go Fort Knox by Install a locking Schlage doorknob with chains and shit. Lastly, put a vicious animal in your room and say things like 'Bear is going to eat you!' ...My prayers are with you.

Seriously though, set up another box.

got an optical mouse? cut a small piece of tape to cover the sensor... use an exacto blade to cut it perfect... she will move it flip it over quick see the red light put it back down jiggle the mouse... eventually give up... but be sure to play it up when she is around and your on the computer like "hey whats up the with the mouse?? did it work when you were using it"... play that for 10-15 minutes then unplug the mouse and say "damn gotta get a new mouse"... and just be "busy" for a while

(keep the mouse for when she is away... plug back in and surf away....)

GUYS dont think complicated, think simple. Download a firewall like the old sygate personal firewall and set it to "block all" and "hide system tray icon".

Voula ;)

Either that or manually set her IP address and set the gateway wrong.

You bring up a good point. Most people are not technical enough for a simple setting adjustment. Go with the Jakal move. At the same time does anyone else feel like they can never really trust Jakalwarrior again?

Well my other plan was to keep bringing the chicken until she has a heart attack but this way is cheaper ;)

Being on Vista and too lazy to figure out why UAC isn't letting me edit the HOSTS file to try this myself...

Could you do an entry like:

127.0.0.1 *

??? That would send everything locally. Or you could route it all to Yahoo or something- so it only partly works. Just not sure if a wildcard would work or not...

You could have a little bit more fun with this way, given the * will work. Otherwise I'd do as Jakalwarrior suggested: set static IP with gateway set wrong.
